I have had mismatched cheap cables that I collected over the last 20 years and never really gave them much thought. I had 20 ft cheap cables running my effects so 40ft! I was getting SO MUCH NOISE between my cheap power supply and cables. Your videos were super helpful. I replaced my instrument cable with a 15ft wbc Mogami 2524 cable, wbc Mogami 2319 patch cables and 2524 for the loop. I also got a 1 spot isolated power supply along with a furman power conditioner. I went from sounding like a buzzy humming mess to near silent. I honestly couldn’t tell much of a difference between tone, at least nothing that couldn’t be fixed by breathing on my amps EQ BUT the reduction in noise made it all worth it. Unfortunately I did all those things at the same time so I really can’t pin it down to one variable but collectively it was night and day

That's great. You have a reference point now that you can compare some of those we tried today and see how it holds up. The important thing is to record it and hear what it sounds like in real time playing the same thing. It removes a lot of the variables.

I've been making my own cables for about 25 years (using Mogami, Canare, Belden, Gotham, Switchcraft, Neutrik, G&H etc.) and I've purchased many assembled leads as well. Here's what I've learned: Fidelity-wise, the point of diminishing returns for guitar cables-as with most cables-is reached very low on the price ladder. My checklist is as follows: ✔ Good rejection of EMI/RFI ✔ Low microphonics (handling noise) ✔ Reasonably low capacitance (usually negligible at the typical 10-to-25-foot lengths we use) ✔ High-quality plugs for durable, reliable connections ✔ A soft, flexible, durable, low-memory outer jacket is a nice perk (although a big part of how a cable feels in the hand is informed by its inner construction) Once you've got those points covered you're basically good to go. To be sure, there are some HORRENDOUSLY bad cables out there, but these days you have to be shooting really low on AliExpress to find one. All of the cables reviewed here exceed the basic criteria I posted, and even typical store-brand cables are often perfectly adequate, tone- and noise-wise, and fall short only in feel and durability. Nobody nitpicks Jimi's tone at Woodstock but you can be sure that the cable he used was technically inferior to your $8.99 Guitar Center special in virtually every way we can measure. If you have a minimally decent guitar cable and you don't like the sound coming out of your amp, before you swap the cable, try moving your head 6 inches to the left because it will almost certainly make a greater difference to what you hear.

I had a fender cable...my friend was using a plant wave cable. I tested my fender cable to his plant wave and I could hear a difference. The plant wave was clearer and brighter. I use plant wave now. Thanks for the video.

Since I'm in the market for a new cable this really helped. I've been using Mogami 2534 microphone cables for a longtime. PRS Van Damme instrument cable for guitar. I'm right in agreement but I give the edge to Mogami. Either Beldan or Mogami you won't go wrong. I have a history with Mogami and that's the tie breaker. Very cool these are budget friendly.

Mmm, Mogami 2524 or Evidence is great. More flat Mogami 2524. Belden 9778 may hide certain sound band area. Middle is a little cloudy and ambiguous. 9335 is brighter than 9778. So far, I’m using Mogami 3348 or Fender Deluxe Cable. Fender Deluxe doesn’t have any noise. That’s pretty good.

Hey Mason, thank you for the video. Per your recommendation i had already ordered the mogami 2524 and got them a couple weeks ago. Yesterday i got the remaining Switchcraft plugs and will start building two boards for a customer. You’ve inspired me and your videos have been helping immensely to go through this virus phase that is forcing me to do what i can to keep it afloat. I’ll be installing a pod go as well as a boss MS-3 and a ME-5 That will complement the pod go regarding loops. I’ll try and see how this will work with the pod go as i plan to use the ME-5 for some parallel effects injecting them back into the pod go but not sure how I’m going to place them since the loops only move together as one block to save DSP processing. For me...German Klotz Bonamassa cable, not because it says Bonamassa. They sound better than Klotz more expensive versions and all other expensive brands I’ve tried. I gig, including festivals, rehearsals, studio and home practise using the exact same 2 cables through my original ‘57 strat to pedal board to Magnatone stereo twilighter for the past 5 years since they were new with zero issues, breaks or problems. Awesome product. Because of my guitar cable experience I use Klotz cables on my mics and PA system...all sound great and no issues!

Good to know that my cable testing methodology was not too far off. I would always plug guitar direct into an amp to see what the cable was doing first. The best sounding cable was always the one I would start with going into my pedals, so I guess I understood that portion of the signal at the very least!

For an 8' length, I think the pair went for $10K. So I have a problem when people say they play a killer guitar and use a $4 cable. I was never sure I could hear a $9800 difference between my fancy Transparents over, say, a generic Monster cable, but I was glad I wasn't killing anything good coming from the tube amp.

After messing around with lots of cables, I really liked Klotz Titanium and thought it was the end-all... But then my Neutrik right-angle silent plug broke after only 3 months, so I went on a search for another silent plug, settling on Amphenol, as it's switch seems to be much more robust. Being lazy, I found a pre-made cable with the Amphenol silent plug on it and it happened to be Sommer Spirit LLX cable and... That demolished every cable in existence! Mogami is a distant memory, except for buffered signals. You can probably run double the length of the Spirit LLX cable than Mogami 2524 and still come out ahead. Unless you want your cable to act like a filter, consider this cable. It's amazing, and I don't think you can get a lower cap rating with another cable that is usable as an instrument cable.

I played the Titanum for a while and changed to the Klotz Funkmaster: really good bass and sparkling upper mids. They use their owne jacks. Normally Neutrik jacks shouldnt break. (High end cables like vovox break on stage, because the have a very stiff inner core with silver. IMHO)

Many of the old-school rig builders do, there weren’t many alternatives back in the 80s and 90s and Belden is one of the American cable manufacturers that have been around for decades.

Problem with only using capacitance is that capacitance reacts differently based on frequency. Impedance is the proper picture, or rather imp and cap, or cap and resistance. Resistance filters higher frequencies, capacitance filters lower frequencies. The Mogami has twice the capacitance from the previous two, yet has more low end. That’s why it’s not a complete picture.

As I said in the video these cables are only for the instrument cables to and from the pedalboard. The interconnections are a totally different thing. I would suggest Mogami 2319 as stated in the video for patch cables.

All of my board to amp cables inside my snakes are Mogami (and have been for years now) but I've recently in the last year moved to Best Tronics CA-0446 for guitar to board. Love the way they lay flatter and roll up easier outside of a snake...the variety of colors doesn't hurt, either. Curious to know where that cable would sit in with the 5 in this video to your ears

off topic: I'm actually testing a lot of trs-cables for dual-source-guitar-pickups. For magnet/mic and Magnet/piezzo. There are only Microphone cables for that purpose available - no guitar cables, which is problematic.. I've tried cables with pF/m 60 to 80. The only one that doesnt sound dulll is the Mogami 3106 (TRS with two seperated shielded cables, welded together. pF/m 80). For "normal" TS guitar-cables I like a big (!) inner conducter with extra shielding - and pF/m 80. Like the Klotz Funkmaster (I've tried pF/m down to 52 but I like 80). For me cables, guitar picks, strings - it's like using EQ. You shape the sound. IMHO

You're going to need a Twisted Pair Shielded for sure, I like the Belden 8412 a lot, also there's the Mogami 2552 and also a larger version (forget the model) that Steen Skrydstrup uses.

Coily cables seem to always dampen the guitar sound a bit. But that is handy in some situations like with my practice amp with an 8 inch speaker. So far I like the Pig Hog cables but I just wont send an unbuffered signal more than 12 feet to my board. I'll go wireless if we get bigger stages. Of all the reverb pedals I've tried (in buffered Bypass) for driving the 20 foot cables back to the rig has been my Hardwire Supernatural. The Hardwire reverb pedals have gone up in price, I'll bet I'm not the only one to notice. Noticeable by a lot + great sounding verb.

Coil cables have a place for sure, especially if you want to roll off a bunch of high end since it pretty much doubles your capacitance - a 10ft. cable is more like a 20ft.

Gotta agree w/ the Mogami & Belden clean w/ both the Paul & the Strat, although the Evidence w/ the Strat was right there. Dirty, pretty much the same, although Belden had an edge over the Mogami. Most of my cable, both instrument & patch is Mogami, but my next order for instrument cable will be Belden. I play mostly LP & 335 style guitars through a Marshall.

Mason - great shootout, but putting a spectrum analyzer on the master bus output would allow comparison of the frequency response to show what each cable is doing vs. just subjective hearing - but also to show what you're hearing different on each cable- or are you?

Ned, I think you’re misunderstanding the concept here. In the way that you’ve described, you’re actually not going to get a particularly accurate view of how the input cable reacts with passive pickups since the output hitting the cable would already be low impedance and not driven by passive pickups. We’ve done two different tests, on the second test it was a little bit more objective because all of the cables were anonymized. There is a limit to the number of factors that you can control if the cables always need to be driven by the guitar pick ups directly, as it is for an input cable test. If we were testing the cable environment on the pedalboard, where we are presumably already converted to low impedance, or the output cable - I agree your testing would work, but we care less about the specs and more about the sound - and what players actually choose in the conditions of a live or studio environment. This could be done with a looper pedal first in line with a low output Z and a true bypass looper with a bunch of cables in the loops to switch in/out.

@@VertexEffectsInc Mason - thanks for the reply. My concern is that like many audio cable shootouts, there's inherent bias towards some cables, good and bad. By having the frequency response as well, you can see what you like in the cable tonality - it's brighter at 4K for instance - or understand that with confirmation bias, if you already like Mogami and bolden, they may come out on top. Think of it as a way to help show why you like a cable with facts vs. just descriptions. And if the frequency response doesn't show any difference, is there a real difference between the cables? I know that I think a certain cable sounds better; just interested to see how it plays out. Don't get me wrong - this was a great video and super instructive; just a suggestion to make it better for future shootouts, and to educate guitarists on what frequencies they're hearing they like or dislike.

These results would only apply to passive pick ups in the context of an electric guitar. Most acoustic guitars have active pick ups, meaning that the cables are buffered at the Guitar side before it ever hits any effects pedals. Presumably a different cable may win, and the distortion component is probably irrelevant.

Wow, I thought I would like the evidence the best, as normally, you get what you pay for. But I liked the Belden the best. I was surprised with the George L's. I found that I agreed that the only sound that I loved the L's with was the dirty strat. I enjoy high mids and treble but I don't think I wasnt the cable to cut frequencies like the L's did.

So far, the Evidence cable is the most..."clear?" Transparent? Whatever. Where as in comparison, the Mogami sounds "round." All subjective descriptions of course. Clear might not necessarily be what you want, especially if you're playing distorted tones most of the time. And the Belden seems to sit right in the middle of that. Maybe EJ like the George L because it rolls off the low end and suits his set up. I think any of the top 3 for me Belden, Mogami, and Evidence are all great buying decisions. If you're on a budget, get the cheapest of the three.

Only exception I would say is you actually do want “clarity”, not harshness, because signal clarity/strength enhances feel and touch responsiveness. I own some BOSS instrument cables and an Evidence cable (I think the next down from what you demoed) Although, I was thinking if I ever want to make my own some day, is buy a 50ft. spool of Belden, make an 8' for guitar to pedalboard, a 20' and 12' ones for running from pedalboard to amp, then terminate some plugs on the 10' left over and sell it. I'd pay for about 1/3 the price of the spool! Or maybe even close to half.

Coil cables add more capacitance and also inductance. If you look at Jimi Hendrix coil cables live at rainbow bridge he is using extra long coil cables in a rats nest which EE engineers would ask why. Roger Mayer said that they used very long coil cables to add capacitance to make the wah, fuzz face, Octavia, univibe output circuits to be very unstable. If you look at Hendrix very long coil cables at rainbow bridge its just doesn't make sense to be using all these very long coil cables and just thrown everywhere with no dressing of the cables. It was to make the pedals output circuits unstable and create oscillations and other noises by adding more capacitance & inductance and resistance from the coil cables which is loading the guitar pedals output circuits.

Literally every difference heard can be 'fixed' by guitar tone knob and amp eq. Buy your cables based on physical build and reliability only.

Nah you shouldn't have to tweak your amp in order to "fix" a shortcoming of the cable. Getting a cable that creates the most balanced sound is most ideal to help you have a solid baseline to work off of. The same can be said for pickups. Sure, you can eq some aliexpress pickups until they sound halfway decent, but you stack a cheap cable with cheap pickups, cheap strings, etc. You're taking a chance that you'll wind up with a really bad signal since you're messing with the signal so much. If it winds up sounding bad, you're gonna need more complex EQ curves to get it to sound just balanced. Of course, a good player can make anything sound great regardless, and I'm not saying you need a $200+ cable. But it is worth it to spend maybe a little bit more (about $50) if it helps you achieve a slightly better baseline tone. It won't transform your guitar, but you'll have a smoother time adjusting the eq afterward.

Very interesting. For me, the tone differences between decent instrument cables haven’t been as big an issue as reliability. I have a Whirlwind cable (which now seem hard to find in the US) that I’ve been using since around 1987, but all the others instrument cables I’ve had over the years have shorted or otherwise failed. Of course, I’m assuming this varies by individual. (Maybe Whirlwind’s strain-relief helps versus how I treat my cables. 🙂) And for someone else, reliability may not be as important.

Nowadays, almost every cable manufacture has a lifetime warranty so most of this is in the concern, just go with the cable that sounds best for your rig and go forward from there

I recently built some Sommer Spirit LLX cables, which are extremely low capacitance (just 52pF per meter). Still deciding if I like them alone in front of the amp, as they offer some real Hi-Fi harmonics and textures but sound a little bright though. However, they really complement with my crowded pedalboard (10 foot before, and 15 foot after it)

Interestingly enough, on the input of the board, most players seem to prefer higher capacitance cables, but on the board itself, with good quality buffering, the patch cables matter way less, brand to brand so long as the capacitance doesn't get too high. Same goes for the output cable going back to the amplifier.

@@gonzalozech on the input the buffer isn't in the equation, so it doesn't matter in that sense on how it impacts the buffer. Go for the one you like the sound of best through your rig on the input and use that. Once you're on the board, ideally the lower capacitance (to a point) the better. Anything below about 50 pF per foot is going to respond about the same with very little differences. The only differences you'll hear (with all pedals in bypass) would be attributed to the quality of the buffer and its line driving capability. Some bad buffers will become unstable the more capacitance it sees on the output. Like the Boss buffers for example that have a 1K output impedance. For the high quality buffers like what we have in our Boost or the Mesa Boogie High Wire, you can have 100ft. of cable after it with little to no difference.

The reason I went with Klotz was a more utilitarian one. It featured what I consider the best built & designed durable shorting ring. And I couldn't find a plug with that feature to buy locally So if I have to change bass or worse I fuck up live & trip over the cable & it pulls out. I dont make it FAR worse by the Humm.. & Buzzz that advertises your shame & embarrassment to the world like flashing neon billboard on a dark night. That's not happened as yet and I pray it never EVER does. But if a shorting ring wasn't a consideration I would have soldered my own custom cables. Vertex shows you how on youtube if you're no solder monkey. And that is the best. You save a fair heap of money. You are not hog tied to the standard lengths offered by manufacturers & or local sellers. It makes cable sniffing affordable & thus more interesting and enjoyable. That becomes important as cable length increases. Because both cable capacitance & reistance increase to the extent of being clearly audible. Thats where solder skills can save you big time and improve the quality of the materials to whatever extent YOU decide. Or..... just go wireless and never have to bother with any of this ever again 🤩

@@SavoryThymes I'd only use the Mogami Gold on the instrument cables, guitar to pedalboard, and the pedalboard to amp. The connections in between on the pedalboard don't need to be that cable - I would go with a thinner Mogami cable designed for pedalboards like our 2314 cables with Square Plug ends. @@JohnnyHurbonConnections we did some videos showing the Pete Cornish style approach, using a twisted pair shielded cable in the Belden 8412. However, since Guitar systems are single ended, there’s no benefit to using any sort of twisted pair shielded cable. There are some out there that talk about what they call semi balanced systems, but it’s all make believe intends to be people who are more on the audiophile side of things and not so much on the technical side.

This isn't a really accurate comparison. Just plugging in and saying "I like the sound of this one best" without making any adjustments is too vague of a comparison. For example the super low Capacitance of the Gotham cable is allowing more high end come through and is a truer representation of what's coming from the guitar. A simple high end roll off in the EQ would yield probably a better sound than the Belden, which is masking that high end because of the higher cap.

I have a question. I tend to use a cable for the strat and tele, but I tend to use wireless for the Les Paul. I can't even really remember why anymore. But the question is: I just opened up my old Dunlop Crybaby and got it running again after like 8 years of being broken. So, wireless is buffered, right? Does that mean I have to use the cable if I'm not bypassing the wah? The wah is first, so I can just skip it and go into the Blues Driver if I don't need wah. But it would be easier if I could just plug everything in. So, no wireless anymore? Or am I wrong about that?

@@VertexEffectsInc I just got my old wah pedal up and running again. I was told that putting a buffer in front of a wah changed the way it reacted to your pickups. I use a really old Dunlop Crybaby, no telling how old but old. I have tried looking up whether my Cuvave wireless is buffered or not, but I can't find that information. I assume it must be though because of what it is. If that is the case, do I need to stop using the wireless in front of the Crybaby? I like the wireless because I can't seem to stop walking in circles involuntarily while I play which bunches up a cable, however the wireless doesn't fit well into the front-mounted input jack on a Strat, so I do use a cable for that. So my question is whether a) I'm wrong that wireless is buffered, or b) I'm wrong that a Crybaby, just like an old fuzz (I use a Ram's Head Big Muff, so apparently I don't have to worry about it?) or a treble booster, doesn't like seeing a buffer on its input? Sorry I'm so wordy, I know it's confusing. That's just how I talk.

@@CraigFlowersMusic the wireless is the same as putting a buffer into your rig and into your wah. Ideally you'd want to go corded and have a buffer on the pedalboard after the impedance sensitive stuff, or get a wah that's more impervious to the buffers on the input of the system.

I like Mogami out of the pedalboard and to the effects loop if you have one, it's a little more neutral and less color and lower capacitance. If you're going to use the Belden, I think using it first is best, from guitar to pedalboard.

Your last cable is at least being driven by a lower output signal that your passive guitar pickups are putting out. Even a normal pedal output impedance a 1K is way better than what any pickup will be able to drive in terms of cable capacitance.

The differences are so slight, and negligible, no one will notice in an actual musical situation, and these differences can easily be mimicked with tiny adjustments to eq. It's not like the difference between guitars, with this it's that no one listening to live or recorded music will be able to name the brand of cable being used. Also note that they didn't test super cheap Radio Shack cables, because they probably sound just as good.

You can presume it's going to fall more in the Stratocaster range in terms of its approximate output and ability to drive a a cable without any on board preamp. We choose the Strat and Les Paul as the most common examples of a single coil and humbucking examples.
