You might not think that one city could be both cheap and safe to live in. While countries like New Zealand and Switzerland top the safest countries in the world, so do tax-friendly countries like Georgia, which are much cheaper for expats and nomads.

I feel very safe living in Malta. Banking is a nightmare yes and current grey listing is a hindrance if you want to start a business but it is so safe. Coming from crime infested South Africa it really is wonderful to go to bed at night and not be afraid of every sound you hear, or having to wear a panic button when you alone to alert security. That's how I lived before 😔 That constant stress in SA is not normal I only realize it now that I don't live there anymore. So I am very grateful to live in Malta and experience some normality

Yes to Qatar. I lived there a few years ago. Tax free. Free healthcare. And very safe. If you come across any form of violence in Qatar, you must be the unluckiest person on the planet. Not quite cheap especially in terms of accommodation, education & luxury goods, but in terms of value for money, you’ll definitely get the bang for your buck for the basic necessities. Food is quite cheap even in hotels compared to other countries. Transportation is also reasonably priced. And you can definitely pursue hobbies like photography, or fitness or art, because these items are quite affordable. The only downside is, you’ll never be a citizen there.

The key is that as soon as you have a large influx of foreigners, esp Americans, the price of everything goes up. Paradise seems to be lost more often than its found, but little things like sanitation and roads can be pretty basic when you get off the beaten track. Budapest is wonderfully safe as well, not to mention people are much friendlier and such an incredibly beautiful place. Both were far safer than any place I've lived in the US...maybe except for Lake Tahoe. Tahoe has changed unfortunately, and now experiences crime. My family in Sacramento live in an area that has seen an uptick in break-ins, home invasion, homelessness and gun-related violence. Traffic is terrible. Housing is unreasonably expensive. If it were not for my responsibilities, I'd likely be in Eastern Europe! I'm in Reno, and while it offers more than Sacramento, the cost of living, crime, and homelessness are all rising...literally no bang for your buck unless you are a remote worker from Silicon Valley, or in high tech like Blockchain. This past 4th of July weekend in Chicago, 100 people were shot, including 11 kids, and 18 were killed. Even if you live in a safe suburb, what happens when you drive downtown to visit a museum or go to a restaurant? You could quickly become a victim. American large cities are turning into war zones thanks to liberal policies such as "defund the police" and weaker criminal laws. For example, they just passed a new law in Chicago whereby a police officer can't chase a person unless it's a serious crime. So if they snatch your purse, too bad! Nobody is going to help you. I would much rather live in countries where the law is enforced such as Singapore, China or where it's very difficult to possess a gun like Western Europe. The USA is no longer a safe place to live in!

When I worked in Latin America I was in two of the CIA's "most dangerous cities in the world". Yes,m we had 1500 murders in town in one month but I used to ride the buses, get fit on the beach, have a drink in the bars but I was safe BECAUSE I learned to live and look like a local. Loved Rio, not too sure about Sao Paulo but I went all around that country and in 19 years Had the single terrible experience of being pickpocketed for 5 bucks! (less than that and they get angry) and that was in MacDonalds.. The other points I would make but you don't mention is residence visas and language. Some easy some almost impossible.

Well.... some of those countries wouldn't be on my list. Belarus ....is anything else than safe. People are fleeing the country for their own safety. It's ridiculouse to come with such a suggestion. Then North Korea would be a paradise of safe with that kind of "logic". Georgia and Armenia are beautiful and interesting but the traffic is horrible. They drive as if they are on a suicide mission. If that is not a worry for you...well.... then go there. On the other hand is Turkey a very interesting country, safe and good food. Most of East-Europe is good. Try counties like Estonia, Latvia, Poland, Czechia, Croatia and Montenegro. Surprice yourself with finding beautiful cities in Transylvania(Romania), Bulgaria and Serbia. Not going to West-European countries because they are not cheap ...is a miss..... there are so much to see. Hence there are a lot of places/countries to travel to. I my self buy a one way flight ticket ...and then I'll see where I end up. Being flexible I think it is called. I've been to over 80 countries.... but since I'sm not a woman the experiences might be different for you..... That women travel solo around in the world is not unusual. Anyhow the most important luggage you carry with you is inside your head. I'm not that kind of traveller that goes to the cheapest and most comfortable place to get "most for my money". I travel to learn and to the more interesting places .....and there you must know what you are doing and have done your homework in advance... Good luck....

I lived in Tijuana for a total of 18 years. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND IT for a single woman. Moreso if you do not speak Spanish. You need to learn too many things, too quickly. If you have three or more women sharing a house, than it can be good. Three women is too many to attack at once. The police, like the U.S., are less than helpless. However, on the bright side, violent crimes against women are a little less frequent than in the U.S.

Usually I would agree with you on most of the topics, but I can’t understand why do you continue to advertise Georgia and claiming that it’s safe… yes, it is a beautiful country with delicious food and mostly great people. But, I would never call it safe … maybe if you live there in a gated community with enough money to send people to do all your paperwork… I have been there quite a few times, and I would definitely recommend to go on vacation there, but I would never advise people to live or invest…. unfortunately corruption still exists pretty much everywhere in the country- police, medical services, etc. and let’s not forget about the war that happened just 10 or so years ago….

I spent a week in Georgia this summer (Tblisi). I was considering it as a possible future location. An expat was murdered while I was on my way over there, and several other murders of expats followed in the next months. I myself did not feel comfortable there, due to harassment, people trying to overcharge for services, being followed around when I was just trying to take a walk, and high prices. I was a bit disappointed with Georgia. I am not a fan but I am definitely considering Armenia and would like to see how it is there at some point in the future. For now I have work to finish in the Balkans and India first but at some point I'd love to see what Armenia is like.

The safest or cheapest locations today is not guaranteed to be the safest or cheapest tomorrow. When I first settled in the UK, London was safer than New York. That is no longer the case. Crime in Oxford was rare. The grooming gangs shattered that. Helsingborg / Sweden felt safe. From what friends tell me that is no longer the case. The best defensive strategy (if one can afford it) is to have options to move about. What the world will look like in 10 years is anybody’s guess.

One word of caution to anyone travelling to other parts of the world. I understand while talking about this topic of "cheap" or "inexpensive" etc. amongst fellow Westerners or people with means whom you identify with. However, be cautious about describing other people's countries or areas where they live as such. The reason many places are "cheap" to you is because they are NOT cheap to locals. Things are often priced on an economy of scale and what the standard living wage and labor rates are. Quite a few of those poeple are just getting by or possibly struggling to pull themselves and their family through the lower to middle classes.
