I wish I could answer all your questions about athlete and video names as I'm listening. It's really aggravating to listen to you not knowing the name of the video Lullaby (and Hazel was Ethan's part which came out first). Also Oliver the funny thing is that Connor struggles with ankle issues. Or at least he did like 18 months ago. I am sure he has in fact done a ton of work on them.

Since you mentioned it I would so love if you edited in the clips you’re talking about. Usually I’m just listening but would be cool to watch and see exactly what you’re talking about 🙌

Parkour expressionist era sounds spot on

I find it funny how we can find more traditional parkour to be less expressive, but to the average person who doesn't know parkour and isn't a part of the culture, watching us move is wildly out of the norm. While the more dancey styles that are emerging are more expressive within the sport, I think no matter how unique or typical our styles are, there is still the core expression of appreciating movement and the physical world around us. As someone who coaches parkour I show my students some videos from time to time. Since I teach in a gymnastics gym, a lot of what they see of the outside stuff is very foreign to them. I often get the "isn't that illegal?" or some of the bigger things that we see as impressive go right over their head. It is interesting to see these reactions because they are so divorced from the online parkour world (aside from video games or fail comps or whatever.) I think you're right in that nobody was forced to make parkour a career, the sustainability and possibility of that falls on those who are making the choice to do so. I think a lot of the trouble is doing so in a way that the broader parkour community responds to and likes. Video and film production are a big part of the culture which is why we see people gravitating towards paid viewing experiences, but I agree that we aren't there as a community yet. We all want parkour to grow as a sport and as an industry and honestly I think things like paid in person events and jams that aren't just competitions are a good way to go. Workshops may fit in there as well somewhere. I have been to a couple of events (Hubbable and Join or Die jam) and they were good experiences, but kind of intimidating as someone who doesn't have an in person parkour community around me. I'm trying to build one at my gym currently but I definitely think more gyms and in person stuff is a better way of making a career than just making content online.

Manor and Commons are linked through Connor. Connor Alec and David were/are all housemates amd great friends at the very very least. I got the impression when visiting that he was actually a part of the business when they were starting out. He has certainly helped with organizing their Jams.

I'm absolutely stoked to spend my 10 bucks for a project like Tether or Sandbox, like I legit feel such joy in those purchases. And I'm poor af 😅. Also that feels like a perfectly worthwhile proce point to me, for the value. Whereas RCA seems super underpriced for the value.

RE number of parkour athletes: "Twice in the last month" seems to be a reasonably accepted metric for participation in a sport. The last year with data for both skateboarding and parkour in the UK was 2016 and found 53k skateboarders and 96k freerunners using that metric. I've seen 9 million skateboarders tossed around as a US number which seems to be based on "Once in the last year" - pretty different. That's also what snowsports uses. If you skied at a resort once last year you're a skier. Gotta get those numbers up!

More people reported doing parkour in a month than skateboarding??? Outrageous! Also why they gotta use freerunner 🫠

Just because the term “starving artist” exists doesn’t mean we have to keep it that way. Sure we can get videos for free, but we should be supporting artists and athletes who are putting the work in to grow the sport and culture.

I've been training since July of 2020, and I feel like I started In the wrong Era of the sport. Prefer the English style more then the American/flowy stuff. Also youtube is where the best parkour is, still.

I mostly do French stick and sometimes Canadian stick but i have to tell the true : I did two American Sticks over my 6 year of parkour practice but I'm over 40, so if you do the math, it doesn't count ;) Btw, are you going to Québec City after the SPL qualifier ? There is a new Parkour Gym (Obstak) and I think you met with the Owner...

Can we get rid of the term non spot it doesn’t mean anything
@STSParkourPodcast

I’d define “spot” as multiple people can sesh at the same time. Non-spot would then mean a single jump or structure that only one person at a time can hit. - René

For years, parkourists railed against having three different names for essentially the "same thing"; Parkour, ADD, and Freerunning. Now that those other two terms have been left behind and all styles have been consolidated into the one term - parkour - parkourists struggle with defining the different styles of parkour. Agreed on the Airplane Graveyard video, but had that opinion back when I first watched it in 2016, (which is when I started parkour, not when it came out.)

I think the real american parkour is expecting everything to be monitizable and wanting to charge you for their content.
