My Manitou Mattoc forks have recently started to make a slushy noise, like stepping into sludge when compressed. The fork is maybe half a year old so not really overdue for a service, is that something to worry about?

#AskGMBNTech, Hi guys. I’ve recently got a MTB and have considered going tubless. Can I set my current wheels up as tubless given the inner tubes in there now are schrader valves, and therefore a wider valve hole than a Presta valve would be? Thanks a lot.

#AskGMBNTech Hi guys, love all things tech related, so fascinating! I have recently purchased a Vitus Mythique 27 VRS, i wobble the rear wheel yesterday as something felt wobbly, and there was a slight nocking noise. I had done a full bolt check before to make sure that everything was tight. The bike was removed off CRC recently, is that an indication that the bike is faulty? Thanks.

it was trash for sure, I had two of the same bike, in 17.5/18.5, it was flexy and hanger bent just by riding it. but frame size, and rider weight plays a role too, at 86kg with all gear on it was too flexy for me.

I struggled with an arm pump. Decided to do indoors boulder climbing during off season for fun. Found out my forearms, palms and fingers got a lot stronger and it translated to not feeling the arm pump so quickly. Pull ups are great for arm strength.

So, you were serious asking about headset's bearings?!..
@corbillionaire
@corbillionaire 4 жыл бұрын
Henry mentioned the bearing tolerance difference between a cheap vs an expensive headset which is a factor. However an even more important and often overlooked factor when it comes to bearing performance is material grade and quality. Good quality precision bearings basically require the Rolls Royce of high grade / high purity "Bearing" steels which are made from raw ore and alloying elements with very few inclusions or impurities. Whereas cheap bearings are often made with shitty recycled steel that can have any number of random impurities. To give a real world analogy a ball rolling over an impurity near the surface of a bearing race is like a race car driving over a speed bump on an otherwise smooth racetrack. If you hit it in the right spot at the right speed or hit it too many times in the same spot it could cause a catastrophic failure. In the world of bearings, MTB applications are very low speeds with low cycles so a middle of the road headset is probably a good bet for moderate use. They probably won't be using the purest steels in the bearings but it will still be exponentially better than a cheap low quality steel that may be used in low cost headsets.

Back in the early 90's when steerer tubes were threaded I got so fed up with constantly tightening the headset on my Saracen Trekker that I splashed out £50, a considerable amount back then, for a Mavic locking headset. It was worth every penny too.

I had an FSA Pig open bearing headset on my Banshee Scream. Never serviced it and it was on there for 15 years before I sold the frame. If I dropped the forks out of the crowns (Monster T) the bars would stay wherever I put them, it was that gritty. However, with the forks in I couldn't feel any of the grittiness. It was never loose so that's just the way I kept it :)

Jakub, if you don't care much about aesthetics and just want to temporarily achieve proper saddle height, you can create a bodgy 'limiter' to the dropper post by tying a thick string (like a shoelace) from the saddle rails to your seat collar or seat-tube. Set the string length in such a way that it'll stop the dropper post to the 'ideal' saddle height. As I said, it ain't pretty nor permanent, but it's a legit bodge until you can buy the suitable dropper post length.

Just had to replace my oe fsa headset (nasty exposed bearings), as it went rusty within the year. I bought a Nukeproof top for £20, and it's a million time better - sealed bearings and a rubber seal. The bottom is a Hope external £30, and it's another leap ahead, with sealed bearings and rubber seals.

@@maximilianpult4016 I don't think you can just swap the bearing type, I think you need to swap the race/cup too. Chances are that if the exposed bearings have gone bad, they will have damaged the cup they sit in to. So you will need to get the whole thing anyway.

For arm/hand fatigue - try tweaking your shocks. If the rebound is too slow, a big hit to the fork will absorb a lot but then subsequent bumps could feel really rough if the shock isn’t resetting quickly enough. That’s helped me with hand fatigue
@mtbboy1993
@mtbboy1993 4 жыл бұрын
9:10 bike sizing is a important thing, having too short reach might result in arm pump, having too low cockpit, having brake levers at a steep angle, but with too short reach you can't have them flat, cus that would make it painful , at put wrist at an extreme angle. So long enough reach, having brake levers flat, results in relaxed upper body and arms, it makes a huge difference I went from a way too short bike to a Geometron G1 Large, which fits me properly. New bike is not always the right answer, but sometimes it actually is if it's a reach issue, you need a new frame. also for hand pump, keep in mind if you use mechanical brakes the return spring might be so strong that it's heavier to press the lever, that's something I noticed, my fingers were fatiguing faster, I switched back to hydraulic, but then switched back to mechanical, but my fingers no longer were fatiguing, so that's due to my fingers being stronger probably due to a lot of more braking and working out. Another thing to check is if you have issues with joint misalignment, this can cause movement restrictions, arm pump. So if you have these issues and use too narrow handlebar your elbow , shoulder might pop easier, misalignment, but also if you ride very technical terrain and move a lot it can happen too, but with a too narrow handlebar it will happen very often. These are issues I suffer from. I also have very floppy wrists, which means it can pop up and down, and I can temporarily lose the power and full range of movement in the index finger, so I missed turns cus I could not brake properly. but I have resolved this with wrist supports on both wrists, I use Troy Lee Designs WS 5205 Wrist Support. It has reduced the play in the wrist, and has eliminated the braking problems. of course there is still some slight misalignment but nothing major that hinders riding, so just easy pop to pop it back, but the issue I had before was so bad it could be felt, and heard sometimes. But as mentioned in this video, you might have different problem, that might not be fixed with these methods and might be some internal problem in the arms.

The best way to pick a dropper length if you are unsure, is to see what size the bike has from the factory and get that length. Thats what Ive done on two bikes and never had an issue. For the arm pump get a set of revgrips. I had arm pump problems but not anymore. Those are the only grips Ill run.
@rafaelgodoy3703

I think that forearm workouts could help a lot if you are experiencing arm pump and you've already tried with different grip ticknesses and brake lever angles. I've found that calisthenics helps to solve a lot of riding issues.

For dropper cost "contraction" - couldn't you add some sort of spacer inside to limit the travel? I don't know about this one in particular, but I had a similar problem installing a 9Point8 dropper on a fat bike and the company has some spacers that reduce the travel at the top - so your maximum extension is limited. In my case I lost 20 mm of height, which came in handy when I wanted to change saddles.

On the arm pump, I'd suggest trying reduced high speed compression damping or getting a better fork that doesn't spike so much if this is the issue. Also Powerballs are good for hand strengthening.

I replaced the stem with a 42mm one and added 750mm bars. The handling was all over the place and the bike just didn't feel rigt, pretty shit to be completely honest. I've since bought a 55mm stem with 780mm bars and the bike feels and handles sooo much better. It's not an exact science and you'll just have to find what works for you unfortunately

#AskGMBNTech I tried to set-up my wheels tubeless and they leaked air from the join could this mean that my rims are damaged and if so do they need replacing? Also how do you increase small bump sensitivity on an air fork?
@doncrescas
@doncrescas 4 жыл бұрын
No you just likely have sleeved wheel. You need to tape it better. Small bump sensitivity: assuming you don't have an upper level for the best solution is to upgrade the damper assembly. If you have a decent fork you might be able to adjust the damper settings and or change the shim stack in the damper. On a longer travel fork a volume spacer in the air spring may help.

Are they tubeless rated rims? Then they shouldn't leak => return them! If not try using wider tubeless tape, reaching well into the grooves where the beads of the tire gonna sit. Soldering (and sanding smooth!) the joint from the inside worked for me as well.

I have a 2018 cannondale hardtail that I've been gradually upgrading (1-by conversion, dropper post, wide-range rear cassette), and next on my list is a fork. I currently have a decent 100mm straight-steerer coil and I'd like to slack it out with some more travel and upgrade to air, but all of the forks I have looked at have tapered steerers. The head tube has the shape and spacing for tapered forks, but the stock fork is a straight tube, and the stock headset is a 1 1/8 inch semi-integrated (I don't know the exact model but I will be checking on it soon). Will I need to buy something like the Cane Creek 40 EC44/40 Bottom Headset in order to run a tapered fork (or something else for that matter)? #AskGMBNTech

#AskGMBNTech Bike Geometry Question Why are the GEO measurements not given with weight or SAG applied on the bike, be it full SUS or Hard Tail ? For eg. wouldn't Stack height, BB height (or drop) or even chain stay length measurements be affected when recommended SAG is applied? Given different rear ends have different travel paths could applied SAG even change in the overall wheel base, especially with very slack head tubes with long travel forks and certain rear linkage? Also as another eg. an aggressive HT with a 150-170mm fork, when 20 -30% sag is applied that can be up to almost 40mm less than its resting height won't that make the Stack height dramatically less and make the head tube angle steeper just by getting on it? Thanks in advance.

#AskGMBNTeck I've got a 2017 skott aspect 950 and it's running an 80$ santour fork. It's good for xc but I want to do more aggressive riding. Is it worth upgrading to a better one? I am going to get a new bike in the next few years.

#ASKGMBNTECH Hi guys, I have been thinking about getting a 2021 Rockshox Lyric. I have been looking at the Lyric select. My question is, in terms of feel and performance of the Ultimate and Select do they feel similar despite the different dampers? Thanks.

#AskGMBNTech i have a trek x-caliber 8 2020 model,and i wanted to change the current fork from 100mm to 120mm-130mm,but when i ask trek's helpline,they say i should stick with the current fork. so why can i not change it to a longer fork on a xc-bike? and how do i know if a hardtail can fit a fork that is 120-140mm of travel?

#AskGMBNTech Hi guys, love all things tech related, so fascinating! I have recently purchased a Vitus Mythique 27 VRS, i wobble the rear wheel yesterday as something felt wobbly, and there was a slight nocking noise. I had done a full bolt check before to make sure that everything was tight. The bike was removed off CRC recently, is that an indication that the bike is faulty? Thanks.

Sounds like the wheel bearings are loose. My vitus uses a cup and cone setup. You will need a cone spanner

#AskGMBNTech how strong are rear qr skewers on a cheaper hardtail? I'm guessing pretty good as they've been around forever but I'm going to a bike park soon with my norco storm (which has lots of upgrades other then rear wheel and qr) and they just look unsafe compared to thru axles. Thanks

Slipping in general or due to sweat?! Look for more "open" _(less flat elements in the surface, go for more ridges n lips)_ desiged pattern grips + *soft* compounds (hands-on testing).

Hey Guys, great show. I have a question, I rammed my handle bar in my leg. Now I wonder if there is something which provides the handlebar to turn around completely, like on a double crown fork or on the the part on on top of the top tube on the canyon spectral. #askgmbntech

#askgmbntech I have had a nightmare of a time keeping derailleurs going for more than a few rides. NX, GX, XO1, Shimano, it doesn't matter; they always blow out or bend or pop out from under me. Riding with some very good people I have been told my shifting technique is spot on. At 220lbs, am I just too heavy of a person for aggressive riding? This has caused me to look into gearboxes. A common complaint with them is drag/friction. Has anyone tried isotropic finishes on the gears to reduce this? Looking for a good fix to stay on the trails!

#askGMBNTech What are the differences between changing the stem angle and changing the number of spacers on the headset, in order to change the height of handlebars? Would the two options perform/feel different?
@doncrescas
@doncrescas 4 жыл бұрын
Assuming the distance from the handlebars to the stearer tube were the same it won't matter. However the short stems that are now common tend to have no rise. The other option is to get handlebars with more rise.

@ Hi, love the content, been trying to get in since months. I am in market for a new bike. The bikes in my budget are all hardtails. the 2 bikes I have shortlisted to. The GT is 1 degree slacker and 10mm longer reach, while the Polygon has 20mm more travel with a better model fork. Rest of the spec is similar. I ride enduro mainly, on rocky trails, What would be better for me? #AskGMBNTech

#AskGMBNTech I have a 6 month old Canyon Strive and then I'm putting pressure on the pedals there is a cracking sound coming from either the bottom bracket area or the rear wheel area. Also when im putting my front wheel against a wall and but pressure on the pedals the bottom bracket flexes like 5mm to one side. Is this flex normal and did i just get unlucky with the bottom bracket or could the cause for this be a crack in my frame.
@Marcerze30
@Marcerze30 4 жыл бұрын
Well probably the bottom bracket which is easy to change or if you're really unlucky the bottom bracket shell is out of spec ( crappy tollerence, hole Misaligned or the hole are not quite round) and if the shell is out of spec you're only solution is a warranty claim .
@doncrescas
@doncrescas 4 жыл бұрын
For the bottom bracket to flex like that is not normal at all. Either the bb is broken or not seated properly or it is a frame issue as mentioned.

@xx-----------xx873

I'll answer. No. the 180mm of travel would be horrible for pedalling around trails, and the gearing is similar to a DH bike. It is a freeride bike, and only a freeride bike. A decent all-rounder would be a Canyon Neuron with a 140mm fork which would do everything from XC racing to Bike Park.

hi there @GMBN TECH i have a request if i may, i am looking to build up an alloy frame muddy fox storm and was wondering if Doddy or any of the guys may have some old spares they may be willing to donate. i am running a 26" wheel at the minute with a 21 speed set up and disk brakes, tho would like to change the crank set to give me a bit more ground clearance as i like to go through dirt tracks with some high stumps. my main issue is the shocks, as the front forks are really bad for bottoming out and the way they spring back is brutal. the rear shock is a standard 750LBS IN and it is a bit too solid for my weight as im only 9 stone, trust me it does not make for a comfortable ride. i could probably change the saddle to help with the comfort but would need to take a look through your review videos for some tips when picking the right one for me. any assistance that can be offered will be greatly appreciated and i would be more than happy to send pics and or video of the work being complete and some time spent in the dirt tracks here in glasgow scotland.
