I actually have a nest of cicada killers in my sand mound. These are rather large wasps that mainly prey on cicadas and are shockingly and generally docile around humans like bees are. And while they can sting humans if actively provoked by one, the sting isn't actually as dangerous as it would be for a cicada. My aunt and I got rather close in personal with them yesterday while limbing trees as our compost box is right next to were the cicada killers were congregating so we took the time to research them better, leading to our discovery that they were cicada killers. And like stated above, they didn't feel any more threatened by us being near their burrows throwing tree branches near them (I bet they used them as a food source) than we did about their presence, so our tree limbing expedition went off without a hitch.

I had a yellow jacket nest in a box on my front porch last summer. I had to pass withing 3 feet of them everyday to get dog and cat food. Only got stung once. It was actually very interesting to watch them buzz in and out constantly. There is a pecking order between domestic honeybees, wild honeybees, and bumblebees. I used to watch all 3 types on the flowering weeds at my cottage in Ontario, Canada. The domestic honeybee bossed the other 2 types around - they never entered a flower she was on. The bumblebee was the meekest - both honeybees would shoo her away easily - even tho she was bigger than them.

When wasps get in my room I can lift the broom head up to them and they will gently hop on for a free ride back outside. But bees??? OMFG so cute but just no brain cells 😭 my room is a sunroom so tons of windows and stg the bees truly believe if they hit the window hard enough they’ll be back outside 😭😭 if I try the broom trick the mfs attack the broom head AND ME with ferocity while trying to portal through glass. Like they don’t have one shot to make their death count 😭 At least the wasps seem to have some understanding of how glass works or something idk lmfao. Maybe someone will be able to explain why in the comments🤣

Thank you for watching our video. In order to provide some clarification, we understand that yellow jackets are wasps (and the video indicates that yellow jackets are a "subset of wasps."). We decided to specifically discuss yellow jackets, since they are more well known to many across the country (compared to other types of wasps) and because they seem to interact with humans more than other types of wasps. This is a really cool and educational video. I’ve been fascinated with bees and wasps and hornets since I was a little kid. Me and my sister and mom and dad drove down from Chicago to Kentucky to meet our bootlegging cousins and uncles for the first time. They lived in a cabin and ate rattlesnakes and stuff. We were “city slickers” and they were kinda spooky. But cool and strange to me at 10 years old. They were moonshiners like most my Irish/American ancestors and it was kinda neat to meet them. This was the 60’s and they didn’t have electricity yet in Cane Creek but they had a well with the best water I’ve ever tasted in my life. Me and cousin Timmy were carving a bow and arrow on the porch and I guess I accidentally stuck my bow up into a wasp nest and that’s all I remember clearly. I passed out on the porch and Timmy told the adults I’d been stung. My face swole up, it got me in the temple and I was rushed to a country doctor down a dirt road and shot with a rusty needle of Benadryl. I recovered but allergic to bee venom now, I was sad that I should be afraid of them from now on. I had my emergency kit with me and even though they could kill me with one sting, I really wasn’t afraid. I just knew to watch out for them. A single honey bee would never sting me and I let them walk on my hand. Wasps and hornets I didn’t trust. But I wouldn’t kill them, I just avoided them. I didn’t get stung again until I was 27 years old and had no allergic reaction at all. Guess I outgrew my allergy to bee venom when the doctors back then said it would get worse with time. They were wrong and I still love bees and wasps and hornets. I just appreciate them from a distance now.

So he decided to do it but luckily he did it near the door, so he was lucky to get in. But I was still stuck outside, so I had to evade the wasp in a zigzag line (I learned this from a guide online) but it was pathetic and the yellow jackets stung me 2 times at the house, and one time that hurt ALOT school. The powerful sting sunk in to my neck and I was rushed to the office. Luckily the fear only lasted for one day but I was afraid to go outside during the whole day. Especially when I begged my grade 3 teacher if I could stay in.

Unless you're severely allergic and have nests in areas you frequent, no need to be afraid. I cleared out something like 10 years worth of weeds and poison sumac in garden beds around and in the backyard of my grandparents house, and planted dozens of pollinating flowers. At any given time there are hummingbirds, bumblebees, finches, honeybees, and paper wasps hanging around, and of those only thr hummingbirds are aggressive. The wasps are reclusive and like to hang out in their little paper nests at the top of the wooden shed way out in the backyard, and I'll see one every few days for like 2 minutes. They come out to clear out the bugs that are known to kill flowers, then they dip. Honeybees have a nest somewhere inside the gutter (grandparents have leafguards so it stays dry), and they honestly don't even seem to notice that anyone is there. They fly in their small area, hang around the flowers and nap, then go home. I stand right under their nest and watch them with my dog, and they're like these calm little dudes that say hi, eat, sleep, then go home. There's also never food around cause wasps apparently suck at getting rid of gnats and it's not worth it, so nothing attracts them to people. It's like a transaction: I give them lots of food and they keep my flowers healthy, and we leave each other's houses alone. You honestly have to be actively seeking them out or leave your food just sitting around unattended to even encounter them. No one aside from beekeepers and pest control people will do the first thing, and no one does the second part cause, ick. They seem scary cause they're little and airborne, but that's pretty much it.
