I did a summer Cruise ship gig for 3 months and the other guitar player Carnival Cruise hired had 2 Rick Turner's and a Parker Fly guitar. I showed up with a Ibanez Iceman, Gibson Nighthawk, and a Guild acoustic. We both had Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier amps and minimal pedal setups. I thought I was being really different with my guitar choices until I saw the Turner guitars he had, which is the perfect cover band guitar to be honest. I have to say I played one of his Rick Turners a few times and was pleasantly surprised at how they play. I expected it to play and feel like a Martin or like an acoustic on the fingerboard but it played more like a really nice electric fingerboard. It is way heavier than you would expect it to be and the two he had were great. We had a good time playing 1950s and 1960s & 1970s cover everything from Doo-Wop and Motown to the Eagles and line dancing which was popular at the time. REMEMBER the F'ing Watermelon Crawl I still get a bit sick every time I hear that song I think I played it 300 times in 3 months! At least 5 times a night sometimes back to back! YUCK!!! LOL

You were in the TRENCHES! Haha! I had a similar experience when I picked it up. The neck was like a really great Les Paul. Super solid guitar. Beautifully crafted. Id almost feel bad gigging with it, but they are meant to be played. Thanks so much for the story! I loved it.

@@TomButwin Per a Lindsey Buckingham solo concert I DVR’d from AXS tv channel over a year ago for sure, I heard his song “Red Rover” with the harmonies and loved it. I am very particular about what version of an artist’s particular song that I truly dig and I only listen to that version. That is the case with this “Red Rover” song. With regard to the particular concert this concert was filmed at- I’m not sure. It is the concert where Stevie Nicks comes on stage and sings two songs with Lindsey. The first one was “Second Hand News” and the second song he sang with Stevie was the song he wrote after their break up, and about their break up when he took a hiatus from the band Fleetwood Mac in the 1980’s I believe. It’s a very emotional, touching song and I believe received a lot of KZbin play. (The name of the bloody song is escaping me at the moment!) When I find the “Red Rover” song version I like on KZbin, I’ll send you the link and you can let me know what you think.

@@TomButwin Far be it for me to give advice to a popular KZbinr, but Yes! It's a wee bit too intrusive. Maybe lower the volume. BTW, I can barely string a tune together on a guitar, but now I want one of those.

Fun fact: John Mayer is the only other 'big' guitarist who also played one, he used to play Half Of My Heart on it (live, I don't know about the studio version), but only the rhythm, no solo at all. And actually, he sometimes even played Dreams in the middle of the song. Though his fingerpicking style there reminds me more of Mark Knopfler, with his thumb. I love the sound of the guitar, but it looks funnily small.

First time I saw Lindsay play the Turner live, I just thought it was a v corny looking guitar (perhaps a bit like the Hofner bass played by Paul McCartney), especially compared with the beautiful white LP Custom he was previously playing, which sounded to me at least as good as the Turner, and in my humble opinion, looked so much better.

A for information about the guitar, F for presentation; those drums over your explanation... My brother, that, is like when someone signs their name, but the end flourishes then cross through their name entirely; it's literal self-deIetion. Perhaps not the Iife-ending type, but psychologically, it *is* self-erasure...

Lindsay always bugged me. He handicapped himself with "fingers only" Some people thought they were folk heros but those of us trying to learn the entire instrument didn't self complicate. I know, he is a rock star and I am a retired paratrooper, who would listen to me?
@TomButwin6 ай бұрын
Well, I'm here to listen lol. Appreciate you watching (and your service). I'd say that when he's doing Travis-like picking ("Big Love" for example), he's pretty incredible and unmatched. Could you play some of the more rock, overdriven parts in FM tunes with a pick? Yes, but it wouldn't be quite the same, even if it sounded the same, his on stage persona would be different with a pick. The whole thing works in total, despite some quirky parts. Just my opinion. I'm a guy on KZbin and no one should really listen to me either lol
@jk-766 ай бұрын
@@TomButwin He is good. Knophler also. At the end of "Sultans" you hear the limmit of finger picking. Could have just grabbed a pick and sounded less "stumbly". They thought their "Persona" was real and people counted on them to be that stage persona. I wonder what else he could have done if he wasn't closed minded?
@garystackhouse5787Ай бұрын
@@jk-76 ...I would guess his "stumbly" finger picking has sold more records than your pick has. Knopfler is not about "persona".... that's how he plays. I'd say he has made it work for himself. I'm guessing he isn't losing any sleep over his close-mindedness. It's like saying "I wonder what Stevie Ray Vaughan could have done if he wasn't so close minded and played classical instead of blues."
@jk-76Ай бұрын
@@garystackhouse5787 Same old argument. Since I am not Gordon Ramsey, I shouldn't have an opinion on how steak tastes best to me? Stevie Ray Vaughan was a great all around guitarist. The two are no where near the same. Knophler can play, he just made himself a novelty.
@RaseemNaqash17 күн бұрын
@@jk-76 There's a couple of videos on here where Lindsey discusses a couple of tracks, as well as essentially throwing in a free guitar lesson. The way he talks to the interviewer, he is genuinely humble, and even acknowledges a point which the interviewer makes which corrects him, about his own song. 'Closed minded' really isn't a term I would apply to Lindsey.
