The optical rangefinder not being able to focus on very close targets isn’t a problem at all. 500 meters is within the battlesight range of every type of shell the M60A1 could fire. Battlesight range is where the shell basically travels in a straight line and no elevation of the gun is required to compensate for gravity causing the shell to drop.

Well said, i also want to add thefact that if youre making an optical rangefinder, the difficulty of making it focus closer gets higher with the range you add, i know it because i've built one (wanted to flex)
@bobiwtАй бұрын
Thank you for adding this. The fact that the range which the rangefinder can‘t measure is within battlesight, is quite obvious but I forgot to say it in the video.

The M60 did so well in the gulf war because the T72s they faced were inferior versions of the genuine T72s that were made within Russia. The best variant Iraq had was the T-72-M1 which was a lower quality export variant that other warsaw pact countries would operate and, in some cases, domestically produce. The version Iraq had the most of was called "asad babil" which was very poorly made domestically in Iraq. Not only did it not have the outdated IR searchlight for targeting in low light, it didn't even have the composite armor that would be in a genuine T72. Thats why even the M60's 105mm gun easily penetrated them from the front. An m60 would have struggled to penetrate an actual Russian T72 from the front as they had been designed to be resistant to 105mm rounds. Iraq would still have ultimately lost the war of course due to overwhelming coalition air power and even if they had the best variants of the T72, they still would've been knocked out by TOW missiles from bradleys, and completely annihilated by the abrams, which could have easily penetrated the front of even the latest T72 variants, even at long range.

I confused a bit about your information on the max range ability of the rangefinder. My experience on M60A1 RISE and RISE Passives was that it was quite accurate out to its maximum range indication of 4000+ meters. According to one of my master-blasters the images should be adjusted so that they do not align vertically so that it is easier to tell when the horizontal alignment is exact. Since the reticle has those conveniently placed vertical lines it's real easy to do. Also the M88 did not share many common parts with the M60s. Track (initially), roadwheels, engine, and some other automotive parts but nothing major like the hull.

I need to know how you found this footage, because the last M60s (not including the CEV and recovery vehicles) were retired in 1997. These clips must have been shot in the mid to late 1990s. Thanks!

m60s were still in use by national guard in the 2010s like here in WA for avalanche clearing

The co-incidence optical range finder was VERY finicky. The night vision system was not particularly good and limited engagements to a max of 750M at night. USMC M60A1 RISE Passive w/ERA killed multiple Iraqi T-72 (and variants) during the Desert Storm operation.

@@YukarisGearReviews No, no they were not. The USMC used a combination of M60A1 Rise Passive w/ERA and M1A1 tanks. I am a USMC Desert Shield/Storm vet. The USMC NEVER used M60A3 (any model) tanks.

I know that the M60A1 Rise and M60A3 both made use of more powerful APFSDS later on such as M774 and M833 which would definitely pack a punch even against a T-72. I have also heard talk about M900A1 (Specifically M900A1, not M900) being compatible with the M68E1 of the M60's, but, i cant find anything confirming this, maybe because i dont know where to, so its just something i heard and cant be taken as a fact at all
