I’ve been a stay at home mom for 19 years and have only translated/interpreted as a volunteer (in church 10 years) I’d like to venture out and make some money but feel lost so I’ve binge-watched all your videos and have learned a lot. I can tell your channel will grow so much because you’re very real, thank you!

Hi Adrian! Thank you for this video. I have a question. In the part regarding the job experiences, is there a suggested number of elements to include? For example, let's say that over the years I have worked for 10 translation companies. Considering the space limit, should I include all 10 or would it be better to mention only the 3 ones that are the most recent or the most relevant?

what if you don't have a lot experience and all of your experiences were customer service? It would be nice to see a physical example as well

Do you think I will have enough work translating into Spanish from English, French, Portuguese, Bulgarian/Macedonian, and Serbo-Croat? Especially having in mind the Slavic languages as a niche.

Thank you for the video, super useful! I have one question regarding the work I've done with agencies and how to integrate it in my CV. Should I be putting the names of the agencies I've worked with or should I just include what work I've done for them under the freelance translator part, without mentioning the names of the agencies? Thank you in advance for your reply!
@Freelanceverse
@Freelanceverse 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Arianna, nice question! :) I would advise you to never put the names of clients without previously asking them. Some clients don't want people to know that they work with freelancers and others just prefer not to have this information public. So my advise would be to quickly ask all your clients (you can do that with a mass email) and then include the ones that are ok with you using their name.

Hey Adrian, I am a native English speaker from the US and I am currently studying German at university (as well as Spanish on my own). I am 30 years old, and recently switched my degree from music to German because I want to work from home as a translator. I am wondering do you think it will be hard to break into this field? Is there a lot of work for German/Spanish to English translators? Is there a lot of competition? The bureau of labor statistics projects a 20% increase in need for translators/interpreters by 2029. Do you think it would be a good idea to get a translation degree after the languages degree? Thanks for the info, I watch all your videos and they are really inspiring!

Also, what level language proficiency do you think will be needed to get into translating? B1? C1? C2 etc? I think my german is probably between A2 and B1
@Freelanceverse
@Freelanceverse 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Patrick, thanks a lot for the questions. The level of your source language is not that important. The proficiency of your native/target language is far more important. I'd say if you have a B2 in your source, you are perfectly fine. Regarding competition, I think SpanishEnglish is one of the if not the most competitive language combination. Just due to the amount of Spanish speakers and the accessibility for people to call themselves English translators. The rates are relatively low unfortunately in Spanish until you are highly specialized and experienced. GermanEnglish is a more lucrative market. Based on your comment, I assume that you're a fulltime student and don't have any relevant work experience yet? I would strongly advise you to start building a portfolio and trying to get your first few clients while you are studying. This will make it far easier to scale after the degree. Make sure to not only focus on translation but any kind of relevant language services (review, proofreading, subtitling, post editing, voice over, language consultancy etc). While you are right that an increase in language professionals is prospected, I suspect the needed skills to change over the years so it's important you offer a wide variety of services. Based on your interest in music, you could try and make that your specialization (working with musical institutions, operas, theaters, schools, composers etc). Hope that helps for now, let me know if you have other questions. It will be hard to break into the field, yes, but if you believe in your abilities and are willing to put in a lot of work, can afford to give yourself maybe 3 years after college and just keep going, you can definitely make it :)
