I’m only 17 but I’m going into my senior year of high school. I know I have time but I’m trying to figure out where I want to go for college and what I want to do. Every time I watch one of your videos I really feel like this is what I want to do. It’s all just scary wondering if I can, seeing the steps to take in these videos really helps encourage me more. I’m so glad I found your channel😊❤️ Would you have any recommendations for getting a head start on any of this at my age?

Means so much to hear all that. Absolutely, if you think it’s something you might want to do, taste test. Try it out. Start designing on photoshop, illustrator, and indesign. Start concepting ideas for brands. It will only put you at an advantage and ahead of the pack. Best of luck and let me know if you have any questions!

Another really informative video. I watched the 'become an AD in a year' video, and it's so true about learning online. As a copywriter I took some adobe online courses, along with some other ad design courses, to get my portfolio together, and whilst I'm no designer (I kept it simple) it got me my first job. With the new world we live in, online learning is looking like the new college.

You’re ahead of most and figuring out your interests prior to getting a job. Right now, you’re in the research phase-looking things up about the job to have a better idea of what it entails. Then, figuring out what skills you need to work on/what courses you need to take to build your portfolio and get a job. My channel is for art direction in advertising but there are art directors in film as well. Keep on digging and best of luck.

I love your channel, I'm an Art Director from Buenos Aires and my major was Brother Ad School, an one year course were I learn the basics and create a portfolio, then I start working at an small agency, but in the middle time I take a Basic Photography course and keep learning about designs program with youtube tutorials, my advise from everyone it's to be curious and search everything that don't know because I confirm that KZbin always have an answer. I think that an AD always had to keep updating his knowledge, regardless of his experience. Now I'm learning about AD at a film school, and I know what I want to study after finish this one. Thnks a lot for create this channel and sorry if my english it's not the best one hahaha I don't take lessons I only learn from Netflix, Twitter and Yotube lol

Nice advice on this channel! Definitely important to look into exact classes you need to graduate at certain schools if you're interested in creative. For example, my CSU has a Communications department that allows you to concentrate in Advertising - however, as we know, Advertising is another umbrella under communications, so by the time you make it to Junior year, you probably haven't even taken a class on creative yet. I was interested in creative but only took 2 or 3 classes total that were directly related to art direction. Review the classes first so you know what you're getting into!

Hi Kevin! I'm a sophomore in high school interested in becoming an art director. I want to go the university design program route and was considering doing a major in design and a minor in advertising (or vice versa). Do the design programs at medium-large sized universities (like UT Austin) provide you with a degree or do they just help with your portfolio? Do you think I would be better off majoring in design and minoring in advertising, or the other way around? And finally, are there any other major medium-large universities besides SMU, UT Austin, VCU, and Syracuse that have programs like this? I really want that stereotypical "I'm In College" feel while still doing what I need to do. I know that's a lot of questions, but any help you can give would be very much appreciated! Also, there are so many videos on your channel that I watch over and over again to keep soaking up info. So helpful!

Hey [InsertNameHere]! Alright, let me try to answer some questions to the best of my ability. It's awesome that you know this could be the career path you want to go into and you're still just a sophomore in high school. That puts you in a great spot. I recommend trying to grab the student versions of Photoshop and other programs so you can at least start experimenting and having fun making stuff. This will give you a huge advantage once college hits. I would go Design major with Advertising minor if that is an offering. At most universities, you will build your portfolio within a particular major. I, for example, went through the advertising program at UT (for my degree) and enrolled in their Texas Creative Program at the same time to build my portfolio and gain more course credits. At any of these universities, it will probably be something similar. You'll have your reg courses and your design ones, giving you plenty of room to have the college experience haha. If you choose, instead, to go to a portfolio school or a purely design school, you might get something slightly different than the typical college experience but those are still options. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any more questions!

Oh boy. Great question. Honest answer: freshman year I had to write an 82-page, semester-long paper on the theory of a building and I just wasn’t feeling the career as much after that. I grew a love for creative problem solving that advertising had and eventually headed that way. They are both fantastic careers. You just have to ask yourself what you would enjoy more and the good thing about college is that you can taste test and always make the switch if you have a change of heart. Best of luck! But just know that there is no wrong decision. Appreciate the comment.

There are always exceptions. Although I attended college (parties mostly) never graduated. I think I was heading towards a business degree. Lately have been guest speaker at Universities for commercial Art Direction. ...anyway...from 1982-1998 I Art Directed over 800 National and International commercials and dozens of music videos. Education is definitely a plus but nothing compares to plain ole talent. "having the eye", "seeing color, and black/ white when your eyes are closed", and most importantly, "telling a story between reveal to vanishing point". Yes, the composition, color selection, interesting objects, EFX, is all important but reveals and vanishing points are king. If you can't totally control the viewers eyes on the screen/print then it just becomes a tangled eye spasm mess. Reveals and vanishing points......study these two critical aspects of Art Direction then regardless of budget, concept, or product the advertisement will at least pass critical judgement.......a student pointed out to me and the class that my Art Direction has had over 3 Billion views....lol who would of ever guess coming from a non-graduate of anything. @OpenDoorCreative
@OpenDoorCreative 3 жыл бұрын
Wow. That’s a great question. As someone who was always interested in art, I can give you some of the options I was debating between growing up but don’t necessarily have an exact “what art career is best for me” resource. Now keep in mind that even without the programs, spending time just thinking, being creative, and pushing your artistry will in turn put you in a better position to succeed later. You will be building your design, art, and creative abilities regardless. Now, eventually I would start saving money from those commissions to start investing in your artistic further depending on what career starts to interest you. If you can get started early, you put yourself at an incredible advantage compared to those who don’t decide until the second half of college. Here are some design and art careers to consider: art direction in advertising or fashion or film, graphic design, architecture, video game design, animation, interior designer, art teacher/lecturer, tattoo artist, photographer, art curator, illustrator, storyboard artist. Hope that helps!

@@360noscopes4dayz Great question. You can see more about my journey here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mHKreatjndl-gJo but to answer you question: Every one has a different path into the career. You can actually start your career off as a Junior Art Director in which you will learn how to be an Art Director in the role (executing lots of graphic design work and shadow photoshoots, presentations, etc. A lot of people take an Art Director internship and try to turn it into a Junior AD role. Others start off as a Graphic Designer building up their design skills/aesthetic and trying to make the transition. I would recommend the Junior AD route if possible so that you are able to start thinking more strategically and conceptually about brand's problems but there is no wrong way for any particular person. Best of luck!

Hi, I recently got accepted in an art university and the subject in which I'm getting my BFA degree is Art History. So is it possible for me to become an art director if I have a good portfolio?
@OpenDoorCreative
@OpenDoorCreative Жыл бұрын
To be honest, the art history degree probably won’t do you much good in art direction career path as it would be better to specialize in design/graphic design instead. But! As long as you have a great portfolio that shows your design and conceptual skills, the degree doesn’t matter as much. Hope that helps.

@@MarleneWizdom it’s all about your art direction portfolio. I know plenty of people who have become art directors with psychology, marketing, and other assorted degrees. You’ll just need to put in some real work to build a stellar portfolio that competes against those who went to school for it.

@@OpenDoorCreative Does the same apply to production design too? I was searching for job postings for PD but they mostly seem like they need a lot of experience too and seem like a job that mostly has no access to beginners with no experience in the field... Would you suggest me working as a art director and then transitioning to Production design?

Hello I’m currently a senior in high school, I was offered a 20k scholarship at full sail is it worth it ? I’ve tried to research enough to understand if full sail is worth the travel and time.
@OpenDoorCreative

I’m not sure. I haven’t heard of full sail so I can’t give advice on that. It really comes down to your own personal situation: your finances, whether they have the degree you’re looking for, etc. Best of luck on your decision!

Question, when you do work for clients, do you sketch and then graphically enhance it, or do they give you images to work with?
@OpenDoorCreative
@OpenDoorCreative 3 жыл бұрын
Hey! It greatly depends on project. I generally sketch just to plan out what I want to do and then draw it from scratch on the computer utilizing illustrator. On many projects, you also shoot or use stock photography for the designs you are creating.

@@potatoprank5882 many times the client will have a bank of photos, especially product shots. Other times you will need to do a custom shoot. If you don’t have as much time or money, you can find photography on stocks sites like shutterstock or Getty to license from.

@@OpenDoorCreative And it provides a permanent license to it? or only temporary? have you ever done stock photos with client work. Probably not. You should leave Miami ad school with a job-ready portfolio and the skills necessary to grab an internship and break into the industry (as long as you put in the effort).

Some of the schools mentioned in the video are good places to start. You’ll want to look for a portfolio program, a masters in some form of communication arts/digital arts/graphic design, or you can check out my book Breaking into Art Direction on Amazon and build your book from scratch.

@@OpenDoorCreative sir one more question. can I study MA in english to become art director
@OpenDoorCreative
@OpenDoorCreative 2 жыл бұрын
@@evelinelizabethv.p1437 I wouldn’t recommend it as you wouldn’t be learning any skills for the art direction job or building your portfolio. If you’re more interested in writing, Copywriting (the wordsmiths of advertising) could also be an option. If you’re set on being an art director, I would find a masters with related skills like graphic design, communication arts, or a portfolio/design school. With all that said, you don’t need a Masters to be an AD. So basically the main thing you would need to ask yourself is where could I learn the skills necessary to build a portfolio and get a job. KZbin, Skillshare, or my book Breaking into Art Direction might be alternate solutions for ya. Good luck!

I would save the money as an MA English degree will not give you any leg up if you want to pursue art direction. In fact, you don’t need an MA to become an art director. If you’re set on being an art director and can’t afford to take programs that are more specific to the career, I would recommend taking skillshare classes for cheap and build your portfolio of work from scratch. My book Breaking into Art Direction has a portfolio-building curriculum if you need guidance. It can be found on Amazon. Best of luck!
