I was on the subway in New York the other day, and there were so many ads for thinx. It's that period underwear that holds two tampons worth of blood. They were very straightforward, just essentially saying "periods suck, let us help, it's not gross". Seeing those ads in public made me really happy, though, because it destigmatizes periods, which happen all the freaking time.

Also to all the young ones with vagina's: a few fears I used to have about tampons cleared up! - the string isn't going to break off, it really won't. - it's almost impossible to get in too far, there's a lot of room up there and you figure out a perfect placement within a few tries. - You won't forget to take it out. / You won't accidentally put another one in. / You won't forget it's there... Why? Because you will notice the string every time you go to the bathroom. - Your body won't suck it up all the way in because that's not how your vagina works.
@andreablanco39818 жыл бұрын
+denise van wijk how do you take out, by pulling the string??? but that doesn´t make a blood disaster?
@DoeiDenise8 жыл бұрын
+Andrea Blanco Have a big folded part of toilet paper ready. Like fold it so its double as thick. But keep it big as in two parts in length. Take it out on the toilet. Don't sit down but crouch a bit. Pull the string slowly until it falls out and lay it on the toilet paper. You can roll it up in there and throw it away without getting blood everywhere. It might still get on your fingers, the tampon might swing or flop and drip, the toilet paper you have ready might not be enough at the first try but practice makes perfect. I dont know how other people do it but this is the solution I came up with. I know it sounds like a lot but it's real easy once you understand how to work it. Just make sure you're above the toilet for any drops and have some paper or even a pad ready in the other hand to put it away in. That way even the bathroom's dustbin stays clean. Yay. Good luck xx

thanks
@beans22228 жыл бұрын
This comment makes me really mad... -Yes the string might break off, if it does, you reach in there with your fingers and you go get it. If you can't find it you go see your doctor to take it out (but you probably will find it). - It IS impossible to get it in “too far” because the vagina canal is only 3 to 5 inches deep. - Yes you might put two in by accident or forget you had one its happened to me and to my friends but as soon as you notice you pull it out and it's no big deal. If you're really scared you can go see your doctor and he can check you for TSS (it's still fairly rare) - Yes your body might “suck it up all the way” because the vagina is only 3 to 5 inches deep and even if it does it doesnt make a difference? And finally if you are too scared or you dont feel capable of using tampons its o.k. no one is forcing you and pads/menstrual cups are just as effective.
@DoeiDenise8 жыл бұрын
+Sab East well now I will be afraid of them once more, jeez thanks. The chance of the string breaking or the thing getting up in there too far is so obviously, non existingly small that there is no point being afraid because of it. Everyone should however indeed know to go to a doctor when something goes wrong. And of course I agree with your last statement. Don't use tampons if you don't want to. Just like Ingrid said. Please don't be upset. I just tried to make the whole experience easier for others.

@sophie11878 жыл бұрын
+Neseine B Non-binary usually refers to any genders that aren't male or female, such as gender neutral, gender fluid, demiboy etc. Transgender people can have periods because if someone is FtM (female to male, which means they were said to be female but they feel they are male) means they still have the female sex organs, like a uterus. And with a uterus, comes a period! However if a FtM trans person takes testosterone, that can lighten their period or eventually stop it. Hope this helped! :)

Can I just say how wonderful it is that you made this video? At first when I saw you uploaded it, I thought "why does this need a video", but then I realised how important it is for young girls to get properly enducated in the subject of periods and how much I would have benefited from this video back when I was that age. And even watching this now, as a 20 year old who has had her period for a couple of years, I still learned quite a lot! Thank you for making this video Ingrid, it really got me thinking how important this actually is and I'm sure this will help and reassure a lot of your younger female viewers

I"m so happy to see this video from a big YT that is using pads and not shaming girls for it. u have no idea how women are sometimes, seriously forcing other to use tampons etc. when it's just a personnal preference and there's not any methods that is good or bad. It's up to each girl, depending on your period flow, what makes you comfortable and how long your periods last etc. etc. I tried tampons, hated it, i don't particularly like pads either but i have a low flow, that last just 3 to 4 days and it's the only method that i feel Ok with. Also, TMI but whatever, when you're a fat girl, it's kinda hard to get something inside you. I'm not that flexible

Thank you for educating people Ingrid.

I've been using a menstrual cup for about half a year now and I am never going back, haha. Another option for people who really want to diminish their eco footprint, is cloth pads and crocheted tampons. Both are reusable, you just wash them with the rest of your laundry and you can get nice patterned fabric, and fun colours on your tampons etc. There's a surprising number of Etsy shops that sell these :)

Ingrid! Thanks so much for talking about menstrual cups. They have legit REVOLUTIONIZED my period. I never dread my cycle anymore, and no longer feel gross every month like I used to. As someone who wore pads but also cares a lot about the environment, I love that the cup is reusable and can't be felt once inside. I wanted to share my experience since I'm too nervous to make a video about this, but feel like every lady needs to know how AWESOME these things are! So I had heard about menstrual cups but was hesitant to try one until I watched Jen's (From Head to Toe) video, and decided to try it out. I legit haven't used a pad or tampon since October of last year. I purchased the LENA cup off of Amazon because it's made in California and I wanted to stay local. It also weirded me out to get a clear cup, so I wanted something with a little more color. I really love using my menstrual cup. It's completely revolutionized my period for me and I've recommended it to all of my lady-friends (even my Mom). I follow the instructions and sterilize it in boiling water for 5-7 minutes before each cycle (and let it cool before using it, obv!) I love love LOVE that I don't have to worry about it for 12 hours. Usually within that time span I get home so I don't have to worry about cleaning it in a public bathroom. No worries about leaks during the night either! The fact that it eliminates odor is a definite plus as well. I just use a little Cetaphil cleanser to get it cleaned and pop it right back in! The U-shape fold is easiest when you can prop one of your legs up, and I've definitely found it's hardest to take out early in the morning. You have to be relaxed for sure :) The first few months of using it, I did wear a liner juuuuust in case. It can move out of place and leak a little, and if it's less than 12 hours in I usually just take that as a sign from my body that it's time to clean it. It takes a little practice but you definitely learn a lot about your body, how long your cycle actually is... and just to get a little more TMI, because the cup catches everything, everything else around it stays normal. Tampon users especially will know what I mean. Menstrual cups really are amazing.

And how long do you have one until you buy new one xd hahaha sorry for so many questions, but I heard that you're cup queen👑 hahah jk😂😄✌

+Marie Louise you only have to change a cup every 12 hrs so I always do it at home in the morning and after dinner. If you have to change it in public use one of the handicap stalls that has a private sink or bring a water bottle into the restroom. Dump out the cup rinse and dry it with paper towels and stick it back in.

@emilypumpkinseller8 жыл бұрын
+Hats4 Hearts I dont use the diva cup (i use the lunnette) but mine also flipped when i was struggling one month for some reason to get it to open fully. I did freak out but it was fine, as long as you relax you should be able to push it back rightsideup or grab the rim (instead of the stem) to drag it out. people should definitely address this possibility when using a menstrual cup, but it really isn't common and should not be a big deal if it happens. your friend almost needing surgery is kind of shocking though, but I don't know her specific circumstance so ya

Love how open you are about the different things to use to manage periods. This will definitely help out young girls going through puberty who are too shy to talk to their mothers about different options. Mine has never used a tampon in her life so pads it is for me. I have tried tampons before but I could never get it right which didn't bother me much because the thought of having an object in me for hours at a time just scares me. I have a super heavy flow and have to change my heavy, overnight pads that I wear during the day every two hours max if not every one hour. Those overnight pads would not last through sleeping no matter how often I set alarms to wake up to change them which always resulted in an awful mess on my pajama pants and comforters. My way of combating that is to wear adult women underwear/diapers when I sleep while I'm on my period that way I don't have to wake up multiple times during the night and I can sleep straight through.

there's nothing wrong with not using tampons, you shouldn't let your friends force you to try tampons, but you never know maybe you really enjoy wearing it more than a pad. personally on really heavy days I prefere a tampon because I don't like the way it feels down there so I use tampons but other than that I really enjoy pads, guess everybody has to figure out what works for their body :)

I've had my period for about 14 years now and I don't think I've ever watched something so informative! Team Menstrual cup!! I switched over to cups just about 7 months ago when another KZbinr (Stevie Boebi) had a video about periods and talked about the Sckoon cup. These particular cups are super soft and made out of high medical grade silicone, made in the USA, and FDA cleared. Plus they come in super cute colors that you can choose from! After a few months of using the cup, I went on a camping trip and decided not to hassle with the cup so I switched back to tampons. It was the worst 2 days. They always say you can't feel tampons, but lemme tell you... After you've tried the cups and then switched back... There is ALL the difference.

Sierra Giles I don't know quite how to explain it and sorry if this gets too gross, but, I didn't know that the tampon was actually supposed to go inside of me. I would just place it there kind of just resting just behind the lips, and not actually enter the vagina. It would lay at a very strange angle, and it would always leak. Now I know why haha.

@rochellejones21038 жыл бұрын
+Chelle e also, you need to make sure that there is a suction that occurs. The cup doesn't just 'sit' there :) it is suctioned to the cervix, that's how it stays in place and there is no leakage. It IS great way to get to know your body. I agree
@jodylear8 жыл бұрын
I love my menstrual cup! I started using it a few months ago and I definitely learned some more advanced things when inserting and removing it! I use the U shape fold, but once it's in, I like to use my finger to kind of spin it. This insures that it actually opens up, as I found that sometimes it can stay folded inside! When removing it, I tend to push it out a little rather than pull. Just until I can pinch the end. Sometimes just pinching the end doesn't completely un-suction it, so I reach in a little further to make it into that initial U shape. You'd think that it would spill or be messy, but I haven't found that at all! It's amazing!

@stephaniesmith35448 жыл бұрын
Just want to clear up: whether or not you're a virgin hardly affects anything. *It's all a matter of how comfortable you are*. The reason virgins are "tight" the first time is because they may be anxious/nervous, which constricts the muscle walls of your petunia. Generally as you have more sex, you get more comfortable, and so you "loosen up" so your muscles relax (think about it, when you're nervous, you stiffen up, right?). It's NOT about hymens or whatever, although there is a bit of skin that could tear if you've never had anything "large" up there. This skin doesn't cause "tightness", your muscles do. That being said, if you're a virgin and want to use a menstrual cup/tampon, there is no reason you can't. It's all about being comfortable. The first time(s) will be awkward. But just remember, it's a vagina. It's an organ. Almost everyone with a vaginas will have something up there at least once. If you're a virgin and you're comfortable/relaxed enough, you can fit your hand up there. Just saying.

+Maite Soto samee, its the idea of sticking something up there that scares me, i get too nerveous and then i cant do it, and thats just with a tampon, i cant even imagine sticking a whole silicon cup up there
@lexthequeer8 жыл бұрын
+Maite Soto Cups are a lot easier to use and insert than a tampon is! Tampons are absorbent which means they are very dry and hard to get up there. It can sometimes be painful (it was for me) and it's not natural to dry your vagina out so it can be bad for your health, especially with all the chemicals they use to make the cotton so white. Using a cup is so so much easier because they are soft and aren't going to dry you out - they are designed to work with the vagina! I only ever tried tampons a couple times and always failed, but the cup was so much better from the very start.
@Naabeille8 жыл бұрын
+Maite Soto Inserting a cup and inserting a tampon is in fact quite different. I thought like you, and tried tampons before buying my cup, but really now that I think back on it it didn't help. But, little tips: you could start with something like the small meluna: it's one of the smallest cup on the market (smaller than the one shown in the video) and folds just as small as a tampon. Also, buy water based lube to help with insertion! (like the one sold with the condoms lol) Especially with the meluna that i find a little grippy, it really helps! You can also try different folds. The one I find to be the smallest is called the origami fold :)

I'm almost 15 and have had my period since I was 13 and have never used a single tampon. I just am very uncomfortable with even the thought. So if I were you I would give pads a little more time and see if you get used to it. Hope this helped!
@1anna18 жыл бұрын
+Stephanie Bianca you may need a couple of times before you get it right. i couldn't get it either. i think it took me about 4 periods until i got the tampon where it suppose to be. because like you, i wann't comfortable with the feeling of blood in my underwear. the instructions says that the tampon is in the right position, when you can not feel it. and the first few times i could feel it, so whether the instructions were wrong or i was too stupid to put this thing into my body. and then one day i got my period so i tried again and then i finally figured out, how it suppose to "feel" when you can not feel the tampon. so just keep trying :) i also changed the brand of my tampons because the expensive ones better to put in, than the cheaper version. so maybe that's a thing too
@alyssasheldon55778 жыл бұрын
Well I first tried tampons when I was 13. Couldn't do it so I always used pads. Flash forward 5 years I just go to tired of missing out on the pool and the beach that I decided to try again. this time I sat down and with a mirror I finally could correctly insert it with no pain. After a couple periods I didn't even need the mirror anymore. Don't be ashamed to wear pads but for me tampons definitely make me more comfortable, I never worry about leaking in public anymore and can just tolerate my period now.

It's also amazing that you can't get TSS with it in, at the very end of my period I'll keep it in for a full 24 hours with no worry and no paper waste. If you're reading this I recommend it!! It's usually about $30 but will last a year or longer.

Oh! Sorry more info lol, I do suggest as you said to make sure you're comfortable with inserting things into your body!! Because I had used tampons for about 10 years prior, I was comfortable and had no issues getting it nice and comfy in there.

+shannonsays this is such a random question, but for someone who does yoga and thus does like headstands and things, have you ever used it while upside down?? hahaha I'm curious about what would happen since its open ended!
@shannonf66288 жыл бұрын
+storiesinthedust LOLOL tbh I haven't done yoga with it in, but I'm sure it'd be fine. The suction is really good and even if it did manage to break with your movements, it would suction itself right back
@storiesinthedust8 жыл бұрын
great! hahah thats good to hear! i really think I'm going to try it next cycle! tampons can tend to hurt me later in my cycle so it seems worth a try!

+storiesinthedust that's internal chafing. I use a juju cup, I do yoga and I can't feel a thing. My Friend uses a diva cup and she's a long distance runner and bike rider. Honestly it changed my life. I can't recommend a cup enough!

I love that you post videos like this. I remember being 13 when I first got my period and afraid to even ask my mom what to do. It’s nice that now young girl can just look up a video on KZbin. After having my 2 kids I started developing a rash any time I used disposable pads. I learned that they are full of chemicals that can actually intensify cramps and lengthen the time of your period! I only use reusable cloth pads now that I sewed up myself. It’s actually a lot easier then it sounds are so much fun since there are so many cute fabrics to choose from. Having a nice soft luxurious pad in all kinds of fun prints and colors has made my period so much more enjoyable and has been a talking point with my young kids (boy and girl) who have seen me making them and helped pick out fabric! Anyway just wanted to share.

but it's always good to know for the people in your life who do get periods. this way you, hopefully, won't be freaked out or ashamed if somebody needs you to buy them supplies or need to talk to a kid about what to expect with their first period.

@justletmelisten2438 жыл бұрын
+Trisha B cisgender means your sex (biological features, like a penis or vagina) match up with your gender (loosely, what you identify as). so he's saying he has a penis and identifies as a man. there's a whole spectrum of gender and gender identity out there.

I used a diva cup for the first time last month, it was pretty great actually. I took it out overnight cause I don't tend to need anything at night but it was a lifesaver at work where we can't flush tampons.
@amyamyamy178 жыл бұрын
Also to get the cup out I just use my pelvic muscles! I push it out until I can get a grasp on it. Super easy. With tampons I always feel like it starts to come out whenever I pee, and I have to take it out fully and get a new one or it doesn't feel secure. With the cup, it does that too, but my body can just sort of suck it back up and it's so nice. I didn't realize how small my vagina was (like all around- length and width) until I started using this thing.

I'm so thankful for these period centric videos. I'm 24 and my mom was always pretty controlling about what I used for my own period. She would only allow me to use pads because she was convinced that tampons would make me "not a virgin anymore," which I know is wrong. So it's really great that you're introducing myself and everyone else to our options. Thank you :)

@mrsloveandbeauty8 жыл бұрын
If you do supplement your menstrual cup usage with pads, try to aim for organic ones if possible!! They are so much healthier because they don't contain all of the chemicals that are used to process regular pads!

In Germany you're not able to buy tampons with applicators. I've seen this in some other countries, but here in Germany it's really not common to use applicators to push a tampon in.

@awsome1828 жыл бұрын
Annabelle Bucknell Well, you just have to use your finger to push the tampon in. Easy as that.

I cannot use pads anymore. Tampons all the way. I never have any discomfort with them, so it works. The menustral cups are interesting, but I don't think I'd be comfortable with something of that size in me.
@audrastowers80018 жыл бұрын
+Kaitlyn Harvey Same, I pretty much always use tampons. I think you would be surprised. I just recently started using menstrual cups, and they are actually a lot.... easier, then many people think. Give it a try maybe! You might find it a lot more appealing then even tampons cause you don't have to worry about leakage as much.
@brittanydavenport87028 жыл бұрын
I had that feeling about menstrual cups before I got my cup. When I purchased my menstrual cup, I was 19, a virgin, and I never used tampons. The size freaked me out but the convenience encouraged me to try them out. There are many many different sizes and types of menstrual cups. I'd recommend looking at the different ones available. I have the EvaCup which is way smaller than the diva cup that is shown in this video. You really can't feel it, and some if the folds you can do with them make them smaller than tampons when inserting. I would say just try it out. It made my life a million times easier. I forget that I even have it in.
@laurenruth9158 жыл бұрын
+Brittany Davenport but how are you cleaning them?
@brittanydavenport87028 жыл бұрын
Kaitlyn Harvey I wash the cup with warm soap and water after I empty it during my period and then boil it for five minutes after my period is over to sterilize
@pascaleplanet18 жыл бұрын
+Kaitlyn Harvey the crazy thing is that if it's inserted well; you don't feel a single thing! i was scared too and turn out i felt the tampon waaayy more then the cup (which sounds crazy but it's real bc it's deeper and more flexible). plus if you need to number 2 well: no worries.

Ingrid, this video meant so much to me. You are such a strong, empowering voice for young women, and the way you confidently and comfortably talked about periods was amazing. This video will help educate girls everywhere and also let them know that they should never be ashamed over their bodies, and that they have control over them. I would love to see you do a similar video on different types of birth control because I feel that girls are not well informed on that subject either.
