@Slane583
@Slane583 Ай бұрын
Correct. People forget the Chevy Suburban of now is not like the Suburban of old when it was first produced. The original Suburban was made to haul around work crews, gear and cargo. Like with everything it has slowly evolved into a people hauler over the years. People these days expect their vehicles to do everything and complain when they don't. If you want to tow more than 8400lbs then get a truck. The Tahoe and Suburban are good for hauling family, friends and a trailer loaded with ATV's or dirt bikes.
@Frank-xt3of

@Slane583
@Slane583 Ай бұрын
@@Frank-xt3of Agreed. Aside from people who haul their children around with it I also see a mother and father with a few kids using it to haul their four wheelers or dirt bikes to a trail when doing family rides. A large UTV is roughly 1,200lbs and a big atv is somewhere in the 800'ish pound range. So being loaded down with those and a couple of dirt bikes isn't going to reach the 8,000lb towing limit. It's not made for pulling commercial equipment. So I don't see why 8,000lbs is a problem.
@catfishbilly7425
@catfishbilly7425 Ай бұрын
You missed the point entirely. My 21 year old yukon xl is specced with a tow capacity of 10,100 lbs and gross combined weight rating (weight of fully loaded vehicle + trailer) of 17,000lbs. My trailer weighs 8900 lbs and occasionally I tow closer to 10,000lbs. I got my yukon xl because It is literally purpose built for heavy towing AND people carrying (notice I said people carrying, not kid hauling). I need both, albeit never both at the same time. If you opted for the optional 4.10 gearing those numbers could be bumped up to 12,000 lbs towing and 19,000 gross. Today, the highest tow rating you can get in them is 8300 lbs tow and 14000 lbs gross and the only gearing available is 3.23, which doesn't help the situation either. Simply put, I'd have to have 2 different newer/modern vehicles (a suburban + a 3/4 ton truck) to accomplish the same thing my 21 year old yukon xl accomplishes in a single vehicle. The point they are making is that they have gone backwards in rated capabilities, where the idea is to move forward. Adjusted for inflation my 2003 model year heavily optioned yukon xl was similarly priced to a 2024 lightly optioned yukon (not an xl version). You're paying more and getting less and that isn't forward progress. So you're right, they aren't towing machines but the point was that they used to be. And, adjusting for inflation, they cost more now than they did when they were very capable towing machines. They used to be capable work horses but they've lost that pedigree... and we have soccer moms to thank for that
@catfishbilly7425
@catfishbilly7425 Ай бұрын
@@Slane583 It was first produced in 1934 and was a very capable machine through 9 generations (through 2006) of the suburban. The platform used in that 9th generation is widely regarded as one of the best vehicle platforms ever made (known as the GMT800). The 10th gen (through 2014) was still capable but quality began to slip. They discontinued the 3/4 ton version in 2013 and that's when they officially went into kid hauling mode as they could no longer be optioned for a heavier duty working version. So the "suburban of old" was carried from 1934 through 2006 and arguably up to 2013 as that is when it truly lost it's ability to do any real work. I own a 2003 yukon xl 3/4 ton and it is a workhorse through and through. So the history of suburbans spans 90 years and it's only in the last 11 of those years that the suburban lost its roots and went into full minivan mode, so it's to be expected that people expect something from the suburban that it no longer delivers. Because for the vast majority of it's history ending only a decade ago.... it did deliver. On a side note, i regularly tow 8900 lbs with my 2003 yukon xl. I also need people (not kid) hauling ability. My 21 year old yukon xl does BOTH with ease. To do the same with new/modern vehicles, I'd have to spend in the ballpark of $150,000+ buying TWO vehicles (a suburban + a 3/4 ton truck) to accomplish the same thing... which I would never even consider as being an option

Man alive, factory 24” wheels is off the charts. 22” is too much. 20” is plenty and perfect for looks, and you can still tow plenty. But honestly, I don’t think the wheel size is Chevy’s towing problem. In fact I don’t think they really have a towing problem at all. If Chevy wanted the Tahoe/Sub to have a 12,000 lb rating they’d do it. The cross-section of buyers actually using that amount of tow capacity on a regular basis is likely small. Both GM and Ford have had much lower tow ratings than the 12,000 lbs they used to equip the Suburban 8100 and Excursion 7.3 with 20 years ago (likely partly as a result of customers wanting better ride quality).

Some observations... 1. No big mystery on the sales drop off - ALL trucks are way overpriced these days, full stop. 2. Tow ratings and power in the 1500 segment are more than sufficient already. Someone with a non-CDL license should not be towing 14000 lbs with a half ton that weighs under 6000 lbs. I have a CDL with many years experience, and I would never tow that heavy in anything less than a 3500. Far too sketchy. 3. Similar to #2, unless you have a CDL, you can't legally come anywhere near utilizing the towing capacity in the HD segment. If you need to legitimately tow 40,000 lbs, you should really be doing that with a commercial chassis / class 7 or class 8 single axle hwy tractor; again for safety and control. They can't just continue increasing this every year and end up at 600hp with 1950 lb-ft -- that's called a Peterbilt 379. They're all painting themselves into a corner and have run out of frog tape.

It’s pretty good quality in general, but they are changing it too fast so instead of finding and fixing the issues during design and releasing a year later, they let the first year owners find the issues. That’s why there are so many more recalls today than a couple decades ago. If people stopped demanding new designs every year and accepted the same (rock solid) model being sold for 10 years before changing, the whole appearance of junk would greatly decrease as the engineers could spend years testing and tweaking designs before the first consumer gets a glimpse at it. I would certainly be happy driving a 2015 model design as a brand new vehicle today, knowing it will last flawlessly for 30 years. It would even get better mileage than the 2015’s did as they have more time to improve and tweak it before releasing and don’t need to define as much to be safe for avoiding unknown issues they didn’t have time to test for. Hell, with enough testing and improving, the gas turbos could be just as reliable as the diesel turbos, which I will take any day over the cutting edge trail assist and driving mode\convenience features in today’s vehicles.

What really drove me away from GM though, was the lack of options. The Colorado now starts at like 35k, doesn't have a 6' bed, doesn't have a base engine, only comes with a touch screen. I wouldn't buy it to replace my fleet rangers, I ended up going with a 1500 Ram classic.

I was within a whisker of buying a 1500 Denali and I was told I couldn’t get the “loyalty” 2k available. GM should be willing to make me a new customer but nope. Got another Tundra and I’m good. BTW, prices are stupid everywhere. Sticker on my iforce max 1794 4x4 was 75k, paid 63.

Vehicles are too expensive, and a 0.5% interest rate drop isn't enough to make people buy unless they are dumb or in need. Chevy could easily use the already in production L8T and punch out the 6.6L to 7+L and slap a ZL1 supercharger on it and push 700+hp.

Could you imagine if one of the big 3 were to say we're keeping the trucks the same but going back to 1990's pricing and cutting the cost of a $90k vehicle in half. How many do you think they would sell. Or even selling them 25% lower. You'd think there would a big up tick in those sales. But no, it's more of a race to see who can sell them for more.
