Why the heck doesn't anyone know it's pronounced Ver-sigh, as in the former French royal palace. Anyway, welcome to v-kei. Versailles is the best band you could've picked. They are neo-classical symphonic metal to be precise and their costumes are French rococo style and their "theme" is that they are noble vampires from the Clan of the Rose in the court of King Louis XIV....or something like that. Really, one super talented band. The band Jupiter are the newer version with a different singer, drummer and bassist .

When it comes to visual kei, "when in doubt, it's a guy". There's a meme out there for it on the internet somewhere, but it's a true rule. Visual Kei bands are predominantly male. However, there is one band that is the exception and that is Exist Trace. Their band consists of entirely female members. To answer your question about name pronunciation for Versailles, it's "VER-sigh". Many visual kei (VK) bands will use French words in their band names, lyrics, song titles, or album titles. This is because VK music and fashion is heavily influenced by the French Rococo (or Rocaille) and Baroque periods. Other recommended VK bands to check out include X Japan, Malice Mizer, Moi dix Mois (pronounced "muwah-DEE-muwah"), ZIZ, Gazette, Dir~En~Grey, An Cafe (pronounced "ON-cafe), Luna Sea, Kuroyume (pronounced "koo-roh-yoo-meh"), Girugamesh (pronounced "gea-loo-gah-mesh"). @@DecvsJapan Visual Kei is an insane genre! I highly reccomend you check out Gackt! "Vanilla" and "Returner" are probably his most well-known songs, but I think "Arrow" is his best. But you have to listen to all four versions (normal, orchestral, instrumental, and orchestral instrumental) to truly appreciate it, in my opinion.

This bands name is pronounced Ver-sigh. The first time I watched Visual Kei music videos, I was really convinced some of the band members were woman too! I have been listening to the band Unlucky Morpheus recently. I recomend their song Cadaver Revadec. They have a Visual Kei offspring band called Icarus cry's but they perform much better in their main band Unlucky Morpheus. I also enjoy bands like Girugamesh, Matenrou Opera and Diaura. I reccomend those bands too :D

Visual Kei is actually not about the music. More about the looks and expression. Versailles is a Visual Kei band, but their music is Symphonic Metal, which is a metal genre that is also big in Europe with Nightwish, Epica or Within Temptation. Each Visual Kei band has a different subgenre of music they play, mostly within rock or metal. Actually the correct term should be j-rock (most fans use that term too). Like j-pop or k-pop. Altough not all j-rock bands are visual kei. (Babymetal is not visual kei for example. Or Dir en Grey had a period from 2007 to 2014 they stopped the visual kei look. Later on the vocalist started to adapt the look again). Versailles was a good point to start. Great band. Also check out Dir en Grey, the Gazette, Girugamesh and Sadie. Great bands from the visual kei movement.

Nothing against you but I'm sick and tired of all those people who react to visual kei and they act with such condescending tone. Why condescending? Because it's always the same "omg surprise, Japanese people can do metal and can do good music, what a shock" gesture when they listen to them. Is it really that necessary to act surprised and make the emphasis on "wow they are good?" second of all... why is it with all of the people that react with comments such as "they look like an anime/video game... and they sound like that too" you live in Japan, you should know by now that they have more than anime and video games going around in there. The aesthetic of Versailles it's not of classic Japan but it got its root on kabuki and Noh and also on the things that you mentioned: glam rock, gothic, cyber and punk music which had similar elements, you by yourself mentioned it at the beginning of the video but retort to the same "omg an anime guy" type of commentary that people that are based outside from Japan. Also... now that I mentioned that, you said that they based on those genres but... didn't expect them to play metal? Like... why not? The last part I do get that Japanese musicians play a lot with the androgynous bits which you actually mentioned before okay... yet, is it necessary to point at that Hizaki is or not a girl? And if so, is it necessary to point at that in case of being a woman, she would have been great... I find that comment slightly sexist. anyway. It's not your fault, it's just that this is all the same every single react and it's becoming disappointing to see that people do it like this.

Right, so having lived in Japan for 7 years I can tell you without doubt that 99% of the population do not know about Visual Kei. It is not even advertised anywhere and in CD shops there is a tiny section for it usually. If many people are saying the same thing about this style of music then maybe it's you that needs to reconsider your opinion. Food for thought. Why am I not allowed to guess the gender of someone? How is that at all sexist? Possibly might come across as rude to some people, but it's not sexist and I didn't mean for it to be. I was fascinated with what I was seeing and that's why a year later to the day I uploaded this I reacted to the same band because they got me into Japanese music.

Second of all it doesn't have anything to be with "being or not in Japan" or "Japanese people knowing about them or not" I know that I work with Japanese people and I've visited Japan. Even if they don't know my commentary was not regarding "everyone knows about it" was about how blandly presented it is in general to say things like "they are all a bunch of anime characters playing instruments, and wow, they actually play well, who have thought?"
