No this is nothing to do with western translation. So called Fibonacci series is actually Indian "Pingala sutras/series". Fibonacci in his book mentioned that he learnt this from Indian mathematician in North Africa. Acharya Pingala's time is considered 3rd-2rd century BCE. He is known for his work in mathematics, Music and grammar. He is author of famous "Chhandaḥśāstra" (also called Pingala-sutras), the earliest known treatise on Sanskrit prosody. Creator of Pingala's formula.

Hi guys! Konnakol is actually used for calculating the beats set in a particular pattern. It's usually used by classical dancers for their beats and also by classical Singers both as an aid and a compliment to instruments like Tabla

What a surprise!! The male artist in the first video - Somashekar Jois is my school senior. Seeing him after years on your channel was a pleasant surprise. Konnakol is amazing! Also delve more into Mohini Dey, the bassist for A R Rahman, she tries new bass picking with her background in Konnakol.

This is also used to instruct/ set pace for dance forms such as Bharatanatyam. More the emphasis harder the dancer steps on the ground. if there's an elongation in the voice that ends lightly then the dancer can make a leap and land lightly. etc.

South Indian Music has 72 complete scales, whereas Western music has 12 major scales. The fundamental difference between Western classical and Indian music, is that Western music has 12 absolute notes. Each note: C, C#, D, etc. has a specific frequency. Concert C is around 262 Hz for example. Ignore harmonics for now (i.e. the higher pitch or lower pitch version of C). However, Indian music is relative. In Indian music, notes are marked Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Da, Ni, Sa. The human ear can distinguish 12 semitones in a scale, the 13th is the harmonic of the first note. In South Indian music, the first and middle notes are fixed (S, P). But the others can be permuted over. Note there are 3 possible R, and three G, but two R and G overlap - the same story with D and N. To find the total combinations of distinct scales (also known as Ragas), we need to use combinations. From 4 possible R, G we can choose 2. From two M, we can choose 1. From 4 D, N we can choose 2. From these combinations, the number of ragas comes to 4C2*2C1*4C2 = 72. Indian music has 72 distinct scales.

In an interview with Our stupid reaction Ustaad Zakir Hussain said that u can learn to play tabla in 1 year but it takes at least 10 years to learn Indian rhythmic repertoire..so you can understand the complexity.
@spdcrzy8 ай бұрын
I started learning tabla at the age of 4 and took regular lessons til I was in high school. Believe me, ten years is for geniuses and prodigies. It EASILY takes 20-25 years to master it at this level.
@Skeptic_arun8 ай бұрын
@@spdcrzy definitely I can understand. May be he's talking about fair enough level. Mastery on the subject may take 25-30 years. That's why we see almost all established Indian classical musicians are in their late 40s or early 50s because this is how much time it takes to be that polished in Indian classical music.

One year to set fingers on Tabla maybe. I have tried my hand a few times. Fixing the ring finger and hitting the table with next. The sound was so feeble...And they start hurting if you do not have practice. Before one can "play" anything complex they need their fingers to train to hit it properly.

There's a misconception that Fibonacci numbers were invented/discovered by Fibonacci but actually it was an Indian mathematician named Pingala. The video showcases that Indians used Fibonacci numbers even before Fibonacci was born.

It's not just south Indian. In north we call it bol. Goes with Tabla and kathak or dholak etc. All the pieces of Kathak have their "bol" in similar way. And yes it is normal to do it without any instruments. In fact they may pause between performance and vocalize the "bol" for next piece and they play it on Tabala and perform Kathak piece on it. Kathak dance use the ghungaru ( foot bells) to follow it.
@chandrashivpuri12248 ай бұрын
This is the language for tabla. It is called “ Bol”. They say the Bol first and then play the Tabla, the voice (person) and the sound ( tabla) sound the same. Bol is also used Kathak as well. They say the Bol first and then their feet make the same sound. You can see that Art and music in India is very very advanced and is a very old science. Almost 3rd millennium BCE !

Fibonacci series or sequence is series or progression which occurs in nature e.g. how leaves are arranged or how petals are arranged etc. It has been abundantly used in ancient Indian temple architecture and as is obvious that in music as well. It is a mathematical progression with various applications.

The Fibonacci sequence and the Fibonacci ratio are part of the natural order of things; in all sorts of places, the perfect face in beauty will have Fibonacci ratios. You find it in snails, flowers, etc. It is pretty amazing that their beats/taal or whatever (forgive my ignorance, I am a complete noob in music) also follows this ratio. I presume the musical notes/frequencies (again pardon my ignorance) also follow these relationships. Perhaps they showed it to make understanding the structure easier.

the voicings precisely state what is played in the actual instrument (Tabla or mridangam). The tempo is a seven beat 4-3 Think of the voicing as a combination of sentences, each sentence fitting within a cycle . The more complex sentences go over three or sometimes 4 cycles. The sentences consist of words and words of syllables. The basic syllables are: Tha, Thi (or ri) , Thom, Nam, THalaang, ki , ta etc. If you listen closely, you can make out the sentence patterns. What the girl is doing is amazing and near impossible for normal human beings: keeping two different beats on her two hands while staying with the primary beat on the vocal.

Fibonacci series is used in this because according to the hindu faith, the preserver god Vishnu, is found in the form of different Fibonacci series shapes on our planet which includes shells found at the sea, also in the shapes of a lot of fossils, leafs of the tree and even the galaxies are in the shape or Fibonacci series basically. So Fibonacci series has always been very important to Indian classical music. Western people may have learnt about Fibonacci series in last 400-500 years but Indian classical music has always had Fibonacci series in it. You can also see the same thing in the music of Mahesh Kale who is another example of doing the same thing. And if you dissect Indian classical music properly, you will find most of it (if it’s original and not fusion), then it will follow Fibonacci series pattern.
