What's funny is the first tihai you were blown away by at 9:00 as they transition from dadra (6 beats) to aditalam/keherwa (8 beats) is actually a pretty standard "riff" that we learn at a VERY young age. I started learning tabla in earnest when I was 4, and I had the finger dexterity to pull that off by the time I was ten, if not younger (and I'm only an average tabla player). For an accompanying mridngam or tabla player, honestly, that's the easiest part of this performance. Catching all the different offbeat accents and rhythmic patterns is also second nature. This is because both the tabla and mridangam are not just percussion instruments, but also tunable AND melodic - unlike Western drums. What's really, REALLY difficult is jugalbandi - the back and forth at the very end between Anoushka and the mridangam player. THAT is a true test of musicianship, and also an extremely complex (but well-known) mathematical pattern. It fits PERFECTLY in 40 beats or "whole notes" (if you do the math). It's a 13 beat cycle repeated 3 times with a half beat space in between, which gives you 40 beats. BUT WITHIN those 13 beats, you have additional syncopation as well. It's not so much polyrhythms as it is nested rhythms.

I think you are responding to the effect of the drone of both cello and the drone strings on the sitar. It is a very hypnotic sound ~ there's more here than what meets the eye or ear! Excellent channel! I dig it!!

@@RealLifeCoupleReactBelle is into girl power and multicultural music so I am going to lay yet another suggestion on your already over loaded plate. Voice of Bacophet is an all female heavy rock group from Indonesia. They sing about the struggles of being female in general and metal players in a society that looks down on women doing that. Despite death threats they persisted. God allow me please to play Music is a tremendous song tinged with reggae- great playing and even better lyrics!

Hearing this song for the first time on her first album, Rise, was a borderline-religious experience. If I wasn't an atheist, I would believe this song was a conduit to connect humans with god (whatever god you believe in). That's how beautiful it is.

I have a small suggestion to anyone listening to a piece of Indian Classical Music.. Particularly if they're doing so for the first time in their life.. Try closing your eyes while listening to it.. It's a completely different, surreal, almost a spiritual experience..

The first time I witnessed Anoushka Shankar was on an episode of Later...With Jules Holland and I don't recall her having this much accompaniment, just a percussionist I think. I've been watching rock and metal music since the 60's and have never seen a human being's fingers/hand/arm move up and down the fretboard (if that's what you call it on a sitar) of an instrument as fast as hers did. You know her sister (half) is Norah Jones, right?
