Clean and big. Moscow and St. Petersburg. Of course. I'll have you know that the only reason those two cities are so shiny and pretty is because one of them is the capital (which sucks the life out of the rest of the country) and the other used to be one for two centuries. Come to somewhere beyond Ural next time, like Omsk - see what most of Russia really looks like.

LOL! My wife took Russian in high school and then college as well and she tells me stories of her Russian teacher, Mrs Gavchenko all the time. We even drove past her "Russian trinkets" store one time. She made every student in class get a Russian name, which was very different than their American name, even if the name was used commonly in both countries. My wife's name is Christina, which is a very common name in Russia, but no... she had to change it, so it became Ksenya. I was actually born in Russia and I'm fluent in it, but studied Italian and French in school. My wife is Sicilian by ethnicity, but studied Russian. It was a match made in irony!

Lots of food (most of it) in Russia isn't organic. Even private residents often provide feed to their animals without knowing where the feed comes from or what's in it. OLEG BAUER You are the one who’s lying here. All livestock food everywhere is natural and has no preservatives. That’s all over the world. What’s different is the actual food that’s given. For example, cows can be given just grass, or a mix of grass, corn, and oats, etc. Individual cattle owners will often allow their cows to just eat grass and hay in the winter, but commercial farms in Russia mostly use feed corn, oats and other grains because they’re cheaper and don’t require massive amounts of land. It’s the same in most northern countries like US and Canada. You have been brainwashed by grandpa Putin and his Channel 1. Oh an ZERO foreigners confirm that. If you have any testimony, link it here. I know for a fact that Irish, Finnish, Japanese and Scottish beef tastes better and is cleaner than ANYTHING in Russia. They only feed cattle grass.

Aleksandr Sokolov, I believe that such canteens are now called "The Soviet style", because they were the staple of the dining in the Soviet Union. Unlike Americans, who have lots and lots of options when it comes to eating out, the Soviet people ate mostly in canteens: at work, at railway stations, in some sanatoriums, on every street... Who can forget the word "Pelmennaya" on every corner! So, I might be wrong, but the Soviet style dining is heavily associated with canteens.

@@bethb7965 I did. I watched all the vlogs in full length and there were days at that TransSib train whee they literally only ate a noodle cup for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I could never do that. But I also have recently found out that I suffer from metabolic disease so when Im hungry, I go all dizzy and shaky in an instant.

Nobody says "Na zdorovie". That phrase is used to by americans only which watched hollywood movies full of stereotypes. First shot usually drinks with toast of the reason why everybody was gathered. If it's birthday then everybody stand up and cheering birhday person. If it isn't birthday then people drinks for gathering together - " Za to, chto sobralis' " Second shot drinks for parents - "Za roditeley". Third one drinks for love - " Za lyuboff' ". That how in my family it is.

What a great video! Really though, you just barely scratched the surface of the food culture of Russia and the former Soviet Union. I had a good laugh watching Kara get introduced to "salo," the smoked cured thinly-sliced fat which is very Ukrainian, and interestingly wrapped around garlic shoots as an appetizer. I've never seen it as a spread, though - far more exotic than the plain slice I tried on black bread. It's true about Georgian cuisine - typical Russian food is not spicy, but the food in the Caucasus region makes up for that! "Lobio" (mashed kidney beans with cilantro, garlic and ground walnuts) is a favorite appetizer of mine. I love all foods, and have a copy of Please to the Table by Anya von Bremzen, which contains over 400 recipes from the former Soviet republics. Just Saturday I made Armenian "Skhtorats," which are zesty fried eggplant slices, to take to a block party in my neighborhood. They were a big hit, with lots of garlic, cilantro and red wine vinegar for flavor. By the way, although it's served everywhere, "Borsch" is a Ukrainian dish. "Shchi" (cabbage soup) is more typically Russian. It would have been fun to see the inside of the "stolovaya" in GUM, which I'm sure is a far cry from the immediate post-Soviet era ones I went to when I lived in St. Petersburg from 1992 to 1996. The food was palatable and cheap, but the cafeterias were pretty dirty. Lots of fun to watch this!

Столовые советского типа в Москве сохранились, даже еда похоже, в старых предприятиях и научных институтах например. В гуме больше для туристов, но еда вкусная.

I would really love to visit Russia one day but in the mean time i will watch your lovely programs, i love the russian people their interesting cusine and their beautiful architecture.!!!!! . Thanks again for this wonderful and informative episode.!!!!!! . Will try to keep tuning in to see what other interesting places you bought visit. Thanks again.❤👍❤❤❤❤😇😇

@Alfred Hitchcock No. Post USSR countries have different understanding of nationality (which is basically ethnicity). Somebody who was born in Ukraine can have Russian nationality, if his/her parents were Russians. Somebody born in Russia can have Ukrainian, Armenian, Georgian nationality. There is Russian citizen (россиянин) and Russian nationality (русский).
@georgelurye62746 жыл бұрын
@Alfred Hitchcock except when I lived in Russia, many people born in Russia weren't considered Russian. Go figure.
@georgelurye62746 жыл бұрын
@@raytracer5726 it has nothing to do with being post-USSR. It's how it was considered during the communist days as well. The Soviet passport had the famous Line 5 on the first page that stated your ethnicity. If it wasn't "Russian", you were always a 2nd tier citizen, regardless of where you were born.
@raytracer57266 жыл бұрын
@@georgelurye6274of course it was inherited from USSR (and from Russian empire before that), hence why I said post-USSR. Last time I checked, USSR does't exist anymore. As someone who was born in USSR, and half of my family being Ukrainians, I can confirm the ''2nd tier citizen'' is complete nonsense. All citizens, from any republic, had the same rights. This myth is easily debunked, when you look at nationalities of high ranking officials in USSR for example. Heck, even Stalin wasn't a Russian. What made others second tier exactly? Funny thing is, a lot of post-USSR countries are banning Russian language from schools, just so they can show they are independent now. But in reality, a lot of people from these countries still migrate to Russia in search for jobs or better life, but now that they are not taught Russian and not a part of any union, they are 3rd tier non-even-citizens indeed. Yes, a lot of people are not considered Russian (by ethnicity), because Russia is multi-ethnic country. They are all considered Russian citizens though. Russians have different understanding of ethnicity/citizenship. For all intents and purposes, if your native language is Russian you will be considered Russian, regardless of what is written in your passport.

I guess it's kind of hard to get a visa now, cause of fcking politics, but people in general r much nicer, that i guess u think. p.s. also think about St-Petersburg in some cases like architecture and all the art it might be better than Moscow
@georgelurye62746 жыл бұрын
The Moscow architecture is actually pretty bad overall. Lots of buildings that don't belong near each other. If you're more interested in unique architecture, you're better off going to Tallinn and St Petersburg, with day trips from there to Kizhi, Peterhof and Pushkin.
