In this lesson, we teach terms for family members in Mandarin Chinese. After you get married to your significant other, you should use these terms to refer to your new in-laws. It is odd in Chinese culture to refer to family with their given names, so this is a good cultural and language lesson to learn.

I have always loved your vidoes since Iona wasn't shown and Constance was, you are all so amazing! A little sad thing is that I notice you're slowly getting rid of traditional characters in videos. I fully understand that it might take more time while editing to add both characters for each and every word, but please please please don't forget us, traditional character learners (& Taiwan-enthusiasts like me!) hahah *maybe "getting rid" isn't the right verb but you're using them way less? Excuse my English :P

It is wonderful to listen to you guys. Learning Chinese with the three of you is a joy, and it always feels like I am learning from my friends. By the way, I noticed some good changes in the Skritter app, which was already one of the best.

I have a genuine but potentially controversial question. Does this list become even more complicated if one was to factor in marriage equality which is now legal in Taiwan and other countries where people of Chinese heritage may live? For example could one say something like "哥夫" for "elder brother's husband"? Or use terms like "夫夫" or "妇妇" for same-sex married couples? No problems if there's not been sufficient time for such terms to naturally develop.

John Burns That’s super interesting, I’ve never thought about it. Chinese terms for family is already super complicated, this will add to the complication. I’m not sure what the actual term would be for in laws of gay couple.

When they met with the memory Champion Gwylm and Fiona said that native 華人 use apps to remember all those family terms. Why not recommend some of those tools because only advanced sinophile learners married in family are going to actually even attempt to actually learn this stuff.

Poor Fiona, going Vegan killed her body and lovely high energy attitude and now she can presumably no longer appear in videos.

No, she moved into a new career and it too busy now but sometimes appears in videos. She hasn’t been vegan for about 3 years, not to say that having a balanced vegan diet is anything but a healthy and sustainable choice.
