What to do when you don't hear sound from your soundbar from HDMI sources

I have been trying to connect a soundbar to my TV for 2 months now. I followed the manual to the letter and watched a lot of youtube videos. Nothing worked. The supplier of the soundbar was no help - basically just told me what was in the manual. Then last night I came across the video. I disconnected the HDMI 2.0 cable and used an Optical cable, thenI changed PCM to Bitstream and turned off the TV speakers. Then tried the soundbar and It worked - FIRST TIME! I could not believe it - your solution was so simple and easy to follow. I am very grateful for your video - thank you very much - greatly appreciated!

Thanks for this. I was connecting my laptop through a tv with hdmi via and soundbar with no audio coming into the soundbar, granted it’s an old soundbar. Your video reminded me I had an aux to audio cable which solved the problem. Win!

Jeez - I had no idea this would be so complicated. We bought a Samsung this year and just assumed headphones would work with it. No - so I bought a soundbar and can't get that to work, with or without headphones. Really feel bad for my mom - she has hearing loss and can only hear the tv using headphones. Can't find the list on that site you linked but I will try your tips. Thanks!

This was very helpful. My Vizio needed a couple of additional steps. Audio (PCM, Fixed) then I had to go to CEC - Turn On, and do a discovery of devices. Thanks for the video (still relevant 5 years later :) )

I had a different issue. The sound bar I've been using has been working fine for years, then suddenly it stopped playing sound. I had to either switch the source back and forth or turn off the tv and turn it on again to get the sound bar to play sound. It's been a bit odd to say the least. No idea if it's the sound bar having issues now or the tv itself.

Yes to whom it may concern. I have a 32" Sceptre t.v. It has a jack for red and white connections. I just received my new sound bar. The sound bar is ilive 32"HD sound bar with bluetooth wireless. I connect the red and white cable from the T.V. and to the sound bar, but there's no sound from the sound bar or the T.V.

I have this same cable set up. I was getting sound through the sound bar, then it just stopped. I've tried these different configurations, and still nothing. I'm considering returning the sound bar to best buy. Maybe the bar is defunct?

Hey Mabel you can help me with my Samsung sound bar connected to my Samsung tv both are about 2 years old If Iam watching with my cable box and I pause no matter how long I leave it paused when I un pause it. The sound comes back on but when Iam watching Netflix or any other programs after about 5 minutes when I un pause it I have to turn the sound bar back on with the remote I hope I am marking it clear as to what I am talking about it is very frustrating thanks.

I have a 2010 Mitsubishi Unisen 154 series TV attempting to connect to a Zvox AV 203. Contacted Zovox prior to watching your video, similar suggestions no results. I have tried all of your suggestions, again no sound. Zovox controls appear to work, tried connecting to a newer TCL still no sound. Tried going to the sonus web site only to find it no longer operational. I hate to purchase a different bar if the problem is with the TVs, or is this just a lemon ?

Thanks for the video but it disn't work for me. I ended up doing a factory reset of my SmartTv to fix my problem. No idea what is was, audio settings are identical after resetting as far as I can tell.

I bought my TV in 2016. For something nearly a decade old, and powered by Android 6.0, it does not send any audio whatsoever to the soundbar at all. My current set up is: PS5 to HDMI Input on a splitter. Splitter to the soundbar and the TV.

Be certain the soundbar is set to the input you connected. Also, some TVs require you to enable an external speaker with the TV audio settings

Hello Thank you for the video.Quick question for you, my Soundbar Subwoofer combo bye LG was working and is hooked up via an optical cable I heard a quiet pop sound and the sound cut out completely I have checked the optical cable and the laser is projecting from my TV I also tried a brand new optical cable still no sound. Any ideas help would be Greatly Appreciated! Thank you. : )Tyler I forgot to mention the speakers seem to be working fine when I connect them via Bluetooth for example to play music. Bought a RCA 38" Sound bar for a 42" RCA TV made in 2015. The Tv does not have the first option plug in U start off with, But has the RCA ,Audio left,Right Down under the Composite Plug ins. I tried connecting TV to sound bar That way, Red/white plug to sound bar and same to TV. NOTHING , But when I plugged the Red/white plugs into the back of my DirecTV Box sound comes out great. Which Would be fine but I use a Firestick So when I switch Inputs I have to turn off my sound Bar and Just use The Tvs Volume ,which sucks. I think I am going to buy the RED/WHITE plug on one end and Headphone Jack on other end to plug to TV. Hopefully that will allow all sound from Tv to go through sound bar. I even tried Bluetooth(Tvs Not bluetooth) But I turned I put it on the Bluetooth option then turned Bluetooth setting on my cell phone to see if a option to connec t to it would show. No go there.. Not sure why The RCA TO RCA plugs wont work when plugging into the TV, But will with the Box. Not to mention Sound bar and TV are same Brand!

Interesting. It worked for me. I've been using my soundbar x 2 years without it fully working. Did not work for Netflix, etc. Worked for KZbin and a couple others. Go figure. You must go to AUDIO SETTINGS on your TV. Change audio from AUTO to PCM. It activates soundbar all around. Hope that works for you. If not, one other option is using the RCA (red/white) connection. I got the sound bar working for ten seconds then the sound went mute. I couldn't get the volume to go up and hit the mute on soundbar and never got sound back even after hitting the mute button again. This is supposed to be easy set up. B.S. Not even the remote instructions are correct.

I connected Soundbar to TV with HDMI Cable (ARC Port) & Set Top Box to TV With HDMI Cable, Tv channel worked good. I Connected Pen drive, music worked good, But when using KZbin on TV with soundbar, the sound cut after every 4 seconds. I Checked without soundbar, KZbin works good with inbuild TV Speakers, but not with soundbar. I Called Service centre, They checked and saying TV is already upgraded to latest version but my TV not supporting to soundbar, so replace TV. Heres my set up and problem...older sharp aquos tv about 8 years old. Optical connection from tv to bose 700 soundbar. Hdmi connections from uverse cable box and sony dvd blurayplayer with smart apps. Heres the problem...uverse cable box works great sound and video. Dvd player on the other hand only video no sound from player or its apps like netflix or youtube. Tried switching hdmi plugs for the uverse box and dvd player, no change. Video only from dvd player. Have tried every combination of audio settings in the tv and the dvd player and nada. Help!

Does DVD have optical out? If so, have you tried to connect directly to soundbar to test if sound occurs in that configuration?

If when connecting your DVD player directly to your soundbar via HDMI and you then hear sound the suggestion would be the issue resides within your TV not passing the DVD's Audio output through to the soundbar.

I have a Samsung TV with sony soundbar. When I watch a blu ray on my xbox the sound is weird. I can turn off the soundbar and lower tv volume all the way and I still hear through the TV it pisses me off. Video didn't help me out but I'm glad I watched. When looking for the date stamp of the 60" BRAVIA tv I found it was made in MEXICO! Wow, ........ . I thought there was the element of cognitive intelligence when it came to assembling electronics! Greedy bloody capitalists . (TV was made in 2014) My realization with my Tv is that there is a sound delay to the sound bar if I use any output (optical, headphone etc) . The hdmi (arc) worked beautifully for 1 year then never worked again. Even geek squad (Best Buy ) couldn't figure it out . I wish this video existed when I bought the stuff. These days we have so many sources (pvr, IPTV box, etc) , it's hard to connect sound bar to many sources.
