Will clicking on the email itself rather than deleting it immediately verify to scammers that it is an active email account or the old password is associated with that email? I found one in my spam from a while back and then opened it out of curiosity, and now I've been receiving several of these recently with the exact same message. Is it better to delete it straight away than reading it?

Clicking a link can tell scammers something - for example if there is a unique tracking code in the link - so it's much better to delete without "taking a quick look", as fascinating as that sometimes seems :-) However, in sextortion emails, the crooks generally don't have links to click. They want you to email them back. Simplest advice is: "Don't try, don't buy, don't reply - just delete and move on."

Many emails, including legitimate and legal marketing emails, include some kind of "tracking link" that gives the sender a hint that you opened it, either using an image that gets downloaded (the image download acts as a signal that the email was opened) or a link you click (which signals that you probably acted on the email in some way). Ironically, very few marketing emails openly admit to having tracking links, yet many have them anyway - but most sextortion scams openly claim to have tracking links, although I have yet to see one that does! Short answer: the scam probably didn't have a tracking link, but even if it did I wouldn't worry about it. I suspect that if the crooks did use tracking links they'd drown themselves in the data they'd collect, given how many of these darned emails they send out each time.
