This was extremely helpful information about wild caught vs captive 😄 my poor little guy was at the very bottom of a display enclosure at a pet store and this pet store has a few store cats. He was not happy but he is slowly warming up to his enclosure after a few weeks

I'd feel weird asking for photos of the parents mating. : ) I saw a really cool dark black one these lizards at a private zoo years ago but I couldn't remember what it was called. The only description I could think of was "lizard with a turtle-like head." I finally did a search of different types of lizards and I'm pretty sure it was a Uromastyx that I saw all those years ago.

Dark Black? You may be thinking of a chuckwalla. It's the US's version of a Uro. The males are black with a red tail.

I got my uromastyx Saturday. I was so excited to see he ate almost all his food yesterday 😂. Now that you mentioned looking up his natural habitat, I may slowly add another extra hide and some more rocks.

My 2 ornate baby are captive also and always bangs on the glass door for me to open it so they can climb on me for a bit then jump back in the enclosure, my enclosure is set up like the grand canyon air plants and dry grass ,

This is all such good advice. I also have beardies and snakes and uros are definitely different temperament wise. My beardies were like little scaly puppies and took to me right away. Always down to be held and walked. My captive uro I would say tolerates me LOL. He loves to take food from my hands and will let me in his cage without freaking out to clean and what have you but I haven't pushed it to holding him yet. Just gaining his trust and recognizing this is a night/day difference from everything else I keep. He is active pooping, growing and eating so I consider it a win :) He will absolutely let me know if he isn't in the mood for me and I leave him be. We will get there at some point.

I got my juvenile yellow Uromastyx today, it eat and pooped. Doesn't dart away when I come in the room or approach the tank however it does run away when I reach in but doesn't necessarily dart like a green anole would or something like an agama. I definitely feel like he's captive bred, in my opinion even captive breeds should be given time to settle in at least 3 or more days. After a few days some handling should be enforced so feeding and cleaning is being accommodated too.

If my CBB is running away when I try to pick up (just got him in the mail today), should I still try to pick him up and handle/hand feed every day? I don’t have proof he is a CBB but he was advertised that way and is very small, so I think he is. I left food in there since I think the priority right now is that he eats something (he’s already eaten cactus pad) after his journey.

@@aridsonly491 Sun City Exotics in California. They said they would try to find his hatch date. He’s pretty tiny which is why I am thinking he is in fact CB. He also did end up spending a good amount of the day out and about once he was warmed up. I was able to hold him inside the cage for about 15 seconds before he scampered away.

Such a great video. Just one question in regards to a wild caught uro. I believe mine is wild caught even though he has adjusted so well and is eating/defecating on a regular basis. I have bought an upgraded cage and it will be a great set up so I was just wondering if it’s ok to pick him up to transfer him to his new home? I tried petting him one time and he got really scared and ran so I’m a little worried. Thanks!

What do you do if the captive bread Uro you got hasn’t came out to bask in WEEKS. But it comes out to eat. Then runs back in as soon as I walk into the room? Temps are right & using Arcadia t5. I have many uro’s but I’ve never experienced this before. It’s actually been over a month
@aridsonly491
@aridsonly491 4 жыл бұрын
At the point in the video where I say to give it a week, that's the part you want to focus on. In your case it just sounds like the uro is mostly settled in. When I say "if it's not coming out, basking, eating, or shitting" I'm talking about at all. Yours is coming out and eating, then hiding. This means it's very shy or uncomfortable with you in the room. This is totally normal. You need to be patient with your Uro and give it lots of time to learn that you mean it no harm.

We were just at our local pet store looking at reptiles. They said these guys don't require water, don't eat bugs? Been watching videos. We are thinking about getting one. Taking notes on care. Do you actively breed captive ones?
@erikm8372
@erikm8372 2 жыл бұрын
Well of course they require water but they just get it from their natural diet. They literally eat specific leaves and shrubs in the deserts of the Middle East. Kind of like here in the southwest USA, the chuckwalla only really eats creosote leaves. That's not their only choice of food… It's just a large percentage of their diet…Of course you can modify their diet in captivity, & I think you absolutely should. For example, I know people in Arizona that specifically go out foraging creosote, herbs, cactus etc. for their Chuckies. They're almost like the uromastyx of America… But anyway, forget what the name of the plant is but Dave Kaufman has a really good video at Israel in the desert. Pretty sure the only water they get is what condensation and fog is available besides their diet. And the temperatures there are 105°F lol

David Jackson he’s just very uncomfortable and/or the lights are too hot. This happens sometimes but is rare. Take your temps and see if they are high, if not rearrange his enclosure with more visual barriers.

Hi I have a hatchling Egyptian for 1 month now. I got him for my son and this is our first experience. Before he shed he looked healthy and had a nice chubby tummy. However after he shed he lost his belly and is really skinny now, and looks unhealthy. On both of his sides where his brown upper portion meets his lower white portion it appears to have hardened like the sides of a turtle's shell and it appears curved upward and very dry and wrinkly looking. I try to feed him wet lettuce sprinkled with calcium powder as recommended by the vets we've taken him to but he only takes a few bites each time. His appetite has somewhat decreased and I am very worried about him. I live in Florida where it is very humid and struggle to kept the humidity down in his tank. I raise the heat to bring the humidity down but then it gets so hot I worry it may be too much for him. I have taken him to two pet hospitals but no one in my area seems to know much about Egyptians and he is not getting better. Can you offer me some helpful information as I am worried about him and don't want him to suffer or die. Thank You, Luciano (352) 874-2993 Luchmiami@juno.com

I've got a bearded dragon and i'm looking to get a uro too, so before you introduce the two lizards, its best to get the uromastyx comfortable with you first and and THEN introduce the two, but make sure you are ready to separate them incase you see any signs of aggression

Great video. I just bought a captive bred Moroccan uromastyx baby today. It’s about 4 inches long. I’ve been reading about them for years and have watched many videos. But they don’t often address whether there’s a difference between housing/care for adults vs babies. Do you recommend having a water dish for babies? I’ve read on some care sheets that hatchlings should have water available. But at what age do you take it away? I’m keeping mine on paper towels. At what age could I safely transition to a soil/sand substrate? Thanks!
@aridsonly491
@aridsonly491 4 жыл бұрын
You can offer a shallow water dish if you want, but it's not really necessary. Paper towel is fine for a while, you can transition to something else anytime you like. Your uro is not likely to actually be CB, many places advertise them as such but they are in fact imported babies. Still good animals though!
