The Minimal Mom In my opinion, kids could also get toys at other times if they have been very good and good kids all the time. If there is any kind of trip or Disneyland going, then I think the kids should get something out there because the things they bought from the trips are still very valuable souvenirs that are not sold in shops, and every thing that is bought, will be remembered for their wonderful trips. I highly recommend that you let the children choose what they like very much, their biggest dream and buy it. children may not like them at all.Purchase only the things that they really wanted and make them really happy.Sometimes they could rarely allow children to have the toys they deserve with their great nobility. If children are still very good, then, very rarely, they could just as well afford more expensive things. Very expensive things, then for the holidays. I advise against banning things that children really like, because then they start plans to just want more.I advise not to buy all the time, but sometimes very rarely still be able to afford something if they have been very good children for a long time.I certainly also recommend that you let the children choose from online stores, because there are just so many rare, popular, exciting, cakey, and sweet things that may not be available in stores. Hello there! Dear parents! Every child has the right to keep all the toys because they are valuable! If you have space, let them keep everything in their childhood! Keep the toys, if the kids like them very much!!! I have 6 kids, and your comment about the big toys is right on, though my philosophy is that it's the other way around for outdoor toys. The smaller outdoor toys usually end up lost in the yard or damaged. So go small inside and go big outside.

As a Grandma of 6 (8 years & under) I find your channel very helpful, also. I like to have toys available at my house for the grand kids to play with, but I was getting overwhelmed by too many (especially big things, hobby horses etc...)! Such a difference to just pare down and donate the big stuff that takes up too much space. Not one of them asked where something went!

When I was a kid grandma had toys and we loved going over and playing with them. She had: wood log cabin blocks, with red plastic roof; colouring books, plastic stacking blocks, and sometimes the kids played cribbage with the grown ups. We got creative and we got to play with cousins. So much fun! As Dawn says simplified toys are the best.

I wish the videos were all dated! Just found you this summer and am catching up! My kids are grown, but my best tip ever for playing with blocks- is to put them on a bedsheet! So easy to pick up the corners and dump them back into the bin or box!

I love a lot about this! We do have some larger toys (kitchen, car tracks, tool bench, doll houses), but we rotate through them and only have one out at a time - while leaving the basics available as well. When the kids start playing more with the basics and ignore the larger toys I know it is time to trade out the big toy for a different one. It has worked great for us!

Thank you so much for your videos! I recently happened upon Joshua Becker just a few weeks ago and tackled the easy living room. After discovering your channel yesterday, I decided to tackle my 3-year-old's room. I wasn't really sure what to expect or how long it would take. I figured I would start with the items in his room and hopefully get to his closet. I am a very visual person so it really helped to see how few toys your kids actually have. I can gladly say that it took about an hour to go through everything, including the closet, and clean while I went. I probably got rid of at least 75% of the stuff in his room! Once I saw all that stuff piled together, I couldn't believe how much it amounted to. He wasn't home at the time but when he saw his room, he was so excited and wanted to show it off to everyone. It is amazing how much even a 3 year old will react to a less cluttered room (and his wasn't even that bad). I'm also thinking about how I can incorporate the toys into the living space of our house like you have. I brought one of his newly sorted bins out to the coffee table and he played by himself for almost an hour while I cooked dinner and his older sisters did homework nearby. It was amazing!

Thank you so much for this toy series! I found your channel a few days ago and have been so blessed by your advice and tips. We have three little ones and the amount of stuff we accumulate is ridiculous between the kids constantly outgrowing clothes, grandparents buying them toys every time they see them, etc. I long to live more simply and to be able to stay on top of housework without feeling defeated and overwhelmed. Ugh! The mom guilt is so real! 😫 I loved it when you shared the research showing that kids are more creative and overall better off with fewer toys. That was so eye opening. I worked on my bathroom cabinet Friday and filled an entire garbage bag of products I never use 🤦♀️, I scaled down the kids clothes yesterday and turns out we have plenty of hangers 🤪 ( I was always buying more because there never seemed to be enough 😆) and we are working on the toy situation today. 😳 It’s CRAZY how many toys they have. One of my boys doesn’t want to throw ANYTHING away and the other is like, “Throw it ALL away!”🤣 Tomorrow I plan on going through my own closet and truly considering which pieces are my favorite and which ones I never wear. Thank you for the motivation! It’s just what I needed. 🤗💕

Just wanted to thank you so much for your videos, you have helped me to completely change my home from being overrun by toys and other clutter. I used to find it to be completely overwhelming and thought I didn’t have enough space or there was something wrong with me because I couldn’t keep our home tidy. Your videos made me realise I just had too much stuff and it was ok to let the excess go. I have decluttered every aspect of my home with your help and it is wonderful. I love your analogy of being at an air bnb. When our home was cluttered we stayed at an air bnb and my daughter said to me Mum it’s so nice here I never want to leave and my reply to her was it was so nice because we weren’t surrounded my stuff and it was such a relaxing environment. Secondly we didn’t have to spend half the day tidying up what was on the floor before we went out and spent time together. You have also changed the life of my friend as she was overwhelmed with kids toys. She thanked me so much for recommending your videos and said once she started she didn’t want to stop and she estimated she got rid of 80 percent of their belongings!

Can you update this? 3 years later, kids are older, what do you have now? Duplos, Magnatiles, Action figures, Cars, Imaginex, kitchen, dolls were all listed easily when I asked my younger 4 (ages 11, 8, 5 & 2) what to keep. We're getting rid of the doll house but not the smaller fire station or kitchen. We will sort by category & size (small things, medium & big) My oldest ones keep their stuff in their rooms. The Lego are insane in the teen boys' room but there's no downsizing it LOL They still at 16 & 14 play for hours with Lego. They also play match box cars, duplo & magna tiles with (and sometimes even without lol) the younger kids. So those are clear winners.

Thank you for sharing all these toy minimalizing videos. As a fellow mom of 4 under 9yrs, I have felt so overwhelmed by the amount of stuff/toys in our home. I've kept so many things from one kid to the next, that the amount is crazy! We just did a major start to our toy purge and it feels so good! The kids are even excited about it and we found so many things they never even play with and now the toys we have are able to be seen and accessed easily. Thanks for your words of wisdom, everything in the videos is so relevant to where we are at in life also. We are far from minimal, but the start we've made feels good! Thanks again!

Thank you so much for these ideas! I tried your suggestion for categorizing toys yesterday and it worked better than expected. I have 5 categories, soft toys, figures/animals (including the accessories that go with them like brushes for my little ponies etc..), vehicles, building blocks and baby toys, I only had a handful that didn't fit into these categories. I was feeling so overwhelmed with toys, but categorizing them actually showed me we have less than I realized, it just looks like a lot when they are all over the living room and have no specific home. I noticed last night the kids played better and seemed less bored. My living room stayed (mostly) tidy too. Another bonus, tidying the toys away showed me which toys they actually care about, my 5 year old asked for 3-4 specific toys and my 1 year old played with 1 baby toy, 1 dinosaur and 1 car.

I have just boxed up toys yesterday!! And put them in storage. Been working on playroom all day today. We moved into this house couple years ago, and I was so excited as there was fully floored roofspace full length of house that was perfect playroom. But always far too many toys in it and kids never played in it as it got so messed up you could hardly find the floor!! So I've pared it down to a few categories of toys and boxed up the rest under the eaves. Told my sons we can now rotate the toys and they were happy with that. Also threw out all broken toys and donated a lot too. 2 of my boys good at giving away. One not so much.

I simplified our kids toys over the summer (two boys, 3&4) I have also found in addition to minimizing the toys to "open ended" ones and fewer choices, another thing that has had a big impact is shutting off the "tv". (we just watch shows on the laptop but still call it tv, lol.) What a difference. The first three days of no tv are the hardest, but then the play MUCH better with each other, they play a lot longer and are more creative. They like to play with empty laundry baskets, string and tape, dishes, etc. I'm dreading Christmas this year though, as my in-laws give them soooooo much stuff no matter what we say. Sad part is, most of it breaks in two weeks and I bet the kids can't even remember what they got last year. Wish me luck!

I love your videos so much and get excited every time you post a new one! What about games? We are a big board game family and see them as sort of an experience. But they do take up a lot of space. Also, do you have rules for screen time in your family?
@TheMinimalMom6 жыл бұрын
Games coming up in the next video and good question about screen time, I don't like having to manage too many things (like you get one show or 30 minutes, etc) so we basically have times throughout the day when screens are ok and when they aren't, it varies from season to season, but usually it is 6-7am and 6:30-7:00pm. And then I make exceptions, if I feel like they earned it (like they were playing outside for 4 hours on a summer day and come in or are extra helpful) or if I need them all to go watch a show for a little bit or if everyone just seems tired or off and need a break. On the computer they can only go to PBSkids.com and for TV we only have DVD's (again, less to manage!!! ;)

The Minimal Mom We have lived with only dvds for year's...almost my entire childhood, and now except maybe 3x for a bit in the last 19yrs! We use our library to get new movies, then they go back..lol But people literally have tried to make me feel guilty or crazy for not having tv, so a year ago I got custody of my 2 cousins and they have always had tv, so last November I caved...Nothing got Done! So 4 months ago we let it go..lol The energy feels so much different in the house too And now I Notice how extremely out of hand things got. I would love to submit pictures, I'm going to attempt, but my phone gallery is full so we'll see how it goes. Thank You For being You!

I'm a grandma and just today began sorting through my 3 grandkid's toys. My questions tho are these: Are books, play-doh, puzzles, board games, and art supplies included in your "keeper" toys like the blocks and legos, or are they a separate category unto themselves? And then what about toys for kids moving toward 10 YO? My oldest grandson is almost 9 and isn't much interested in the younger kid's toys anymore (girl age 6, boy age 4). At his house he has gobs of legos so at my house I think he'd like something different. Any suggestions that aren't "remote control" things or video type games? Thanks for your very helpful vids.

I'm excited to declutter my girls toys today using categories. I also have this new idea in my head, that instead of awarding them with gifts, toys, ect, I rather reward them with memories. I rather plan an activity, go to the park, museum, zoo, ect. It doesn't even need to be expensive, there are free or very low cost museums, zoos or other attractions that not only will they create a memory, but they will learn from.

Hi Dawn! Your a huge inspiration to me. Your videos have helped me so much! Especially your laundry system and kids toys. I do have a question for you. My kids 5 kids are ages 1,2,6,8, and 10. Not so much my ten year old but my other four still take baths and always had bath toys. How did you handle those? We always had set toys but over time they bring non bath toys in the bathroom and next thing I know the whole tub is full of bath toys. Today I emptied out the entire bathroom and left just the essentials with no toys. Is that overboard? Should I keep a few in there or let them have a set number they can bring in their bath or just none at all? I don't want to be overly strict but am sick of being overwhelmed with sorting and organizing the entire house.

I'm with you on the tape. My daughter's toys of choice now are boxes and crafting. I love it, but she makes a HUGE mess! She has made a really cute and impressive "store" with a window, welcome sign, advertisements, grass, etc. and makes items to sell in the store. I bought a big box of paper punches at a yard sell and she and her friends are obsessed.

Stacy Benefield In my opinion, kids could also get toys at other times if they have been very good and good kids all the time. I will be keeping more than you have, but am really going to try to be as strict and realistic as I can! I’ve gone through toys many many times but have never done as big of a purge as I need to. I really need to get rid of most stuffies and am finally going to get rid of their toy kitchen that they almost never play with. I’m actually take it to our church nursery and expect to see them play with it more often once it’s out of the house🤣

I love toys (not necessarily stuffed ones..) more than my kids.. I volunteered for over 5 years at two playgroups in our area.. I forget our house is not the playgroup. Sometimes I keep toys things how much I would love running one myself. (In UK playgroup is not the same as preschool, it’s a place where parents come and play with their kids)

We have a awkward shaped house with small bedrooms and our entire basement is unusable because it keeps getting filled with all the over flow.. I have an 11 year old, a 2 year old, and I'm 6 months pregnant. I'm constantly exhausted and overwhelmed. I know all this stuff is a lot of the problem. I agree! Our kids have a HUGE room and I wish I could move that space elsewhere! But they just have beds (with up to 3 stuffed animals on them) and night stands in their room...but I do still make them go and play in their room...actually, I usually tell them to go make their beds and clean their room, and come up to find them building a fort with blankets or playing house. I'll talk about this more in our next video :)

(Maybe return the jars if they're taunting you, not sure if you've opened them yet! Now they are in boxes at the attic but I want to have them downstairs but they won't fit in the black closet you have or other boxes/draws I have seen in the Ikea. Thanks and have a nice day! I hope more video's will follow about toys and memorables of them and of myself.

Good questions! I don't know if they sell the black anymore? I think they only have other colors, we purchased it about 5 years ago :( And I do have some other videos about big toys, not sure if you've seen the other videos in the series, but mostly, it seems that while the kids would sometimes play with the bigger things, they're really content now with what we have out so I just got rid of them!!

@TheMinimalMom I have 15 'moving' cardboard boxes coming Monday.. I've wrote a few categories 'to keep' & I'm going to put the rest of the toy's in storage, my 9yo daughter is a hoarder lol she LOVES her baby doll's & there clothes & her babies toy's and blankets and car & her baby has a wardrobe (her dads co-worker was getting rid, gave it to us) her baby has a car seat and a double pram.. it's safe to say her babies category is the biggest, let me see she has.. close to 10 dolls but that's after we've gotten rid of her easier to get rid of babies, now these are her 'best/fav' and oh lord! lol She's going to have a huge family when she's older.. Anyway all that to say, I've tried SO many way to declutter and organise this is just about my last resort, it has to work lol failing this I'm moving out :-D or hiring a cleaner, something has to give. I've been trying to become minimal & organised for 3? -4 years and I have my son's room nailed, he actually has maybe 1 bin I could go through but he's so minimal I don't bother. it's my daughter that needs taming, she came in to me 2 days ago, mum look my friend gave me this BABY for my birthday (our rule is no more buying babies) they just keep coming! Lol she asked, can i keep her Me: *sob's, ok.

I've decluttered toys and it's a relief, I mean I still am in the process.... however I always ask my kids what they want to keep or throw away, I think it's just wrong for parents to throw away without consulting the child first, one mans trash is another mans treasure. Each child usually only have one or two toys they're very attached to.

Jeez I got so angry... and told him about look how many toys he had and he was asking for more, then on the other hand he was willling to give some away bec he wasn't interested anymore... so I think the situation is a mix of overwhelming quantity (and believe me they have way less than many people I know) and starting to act arrogant in a way that I want it I should have it... and mom with the same rhetoric of you have more than enough and there are kids with nothing.

I know this is an old video so I don’t know if you’ll see this but my problem is that my 7 year old rarely plays with toys mostly he plays with video games and if he plays with toys he goes to his baby brothers room and plays with his toys. He refuses to donate his own toys though I don’t know what to do!!

Hahaha, the funny part is that I had a role I was hiding just for gift wrapping and then the other day I was trying to get something done and he was looking for more so I just gave it to him so that he would be occupied and I could keep working ;) I told my mom to get him tape, rubber bands and boxes for Christmas!!! ;)

@@TheMinimalMom lucky kid!!! I would've loved that so much as a kid! Fun patterned duct tape would be great too!

How do people manage the “Mum I need XYZ, where did it go?” Our son is so reluctant to get rid of things. We’ve been working with him until now but he’s 5 and is realising things don’t come back and starting to get anxious when i declutter and ask him to pass something on (aka get rid of it).
