I owned a couple Gibson Corvus guitars back in the day. Sweet guitars wish I never sold them. I really loved the Gibsons that were different that their usual LP, SG, Ex or Vs. I called the Corvus shape a can opener! LOL

Corey knows what he's doing. He will take the attention, no matter that most of it is negative. It's like the old figure 8 car races. You don't watch for the skill of the drivers, you watch it to see car wrecks.

So, now I want to take that Corvus shape, make that upper bout look more like a sharkfin, do a 3+3 headstock, like a Parklane “snakehead”, and call it the Tiburon. Make it in single H, HH, single S, T-style SS, S-style SSS/HSS/HSH versions…

I wonder why we always want to decipher who/what a band's influences are/were? Sometimes I do this in a positive way, like I'm excited to hear someone who kinda has Jeff Beck's guitar tone, or whatever. Other times, it strikes me in a negative way, like they're just ripping someone off, or being pretentious by trying to sound like Chris Cornell, or whoever. >>> A few weeks ago this happened to me and almost deterred me from discovering one of the best albums I've ever heard... and I'm comparing it to the best from the late 60's, to modern day (seriously). I started out liking it, but was hung up on the pretentiousness thing, due to the vocals. I was basically going to blow it off and forget about it. Then, a song came on, and it was like a beautiful light switched on. The song was 'Big Sur', if you listen to the album link. I listened to the rest of the record, which is over an hour in total. Then, I listened to the whole thing again... then again the next day, and four or five times since. This is not like me at all. I actually kept myself from listening to it a few times because I don't want to get burnt on it. To me, it's that captivating, and if you read the comments, it's full of people saying the same thing. >>> I can't believe I was so close to turning it off, then with one song, all the perceived pretentiousness got sucked out the window and it became its own thing. kzbin.info/www/bejne/b2eUdKlvgNh9i6c

I think I know the why behind the Corvus... Years back, an author friend of mine who played guitar was tagging along on one of my equipment "dumpster dives", and we ran across one in a pawn shop near Tulsa. She (gender's important here) was intrigued by the bizarre shape, but she never liked to play electric because the typical body styles never seemed like a comfy fit for female anatomy. So she picks up the Corvus, sits down to play it, and you could see the lightbulb go off in her brain. The Corvus is actually well designed for women! The drastic, long cut across one side doesn't get in the way of...mmm, you can figure that out. But also, when played standing, the weird strap lock position helps to maintain that angle, so once again, big win for female players. Could Gibson have been thinking about a guitar for women? It's possible. The mid-80s had plenty of female artists who could tear up on electric, so making a guitar tailored for them seems like a no-brainer. And once they achieved this milestone...they never said Word #1 about that point. Seems that while the designers had their heads in the right place, marketing at Gibson recoiled because electric guitars are GUY instruments, and this might reflect badly on Gibson's other instruments. Like I said, it was the 80s. Plus, the period that gave us the Corvus was the start of Gibson's rampant acquisition of brands...or as some of us around Nashville knew of it, the beginning of Gibson becoming "the place where music brands go to die". It was around this time that Gibson "ate" Moog...which consisted of Gibson piling up Moog's entire operation from NY, sticking this in a few truck trailers, then leaving them parked at the Elm Hill Pike facility for a few YEARS until a synth broker out of Oklahoma bought the entire mess. Sounds like Gibson to me! So the Corvus happened during that same general period. I don't think we'll ever know definitively as to whether or not they were trying to come up with a "woman's guitar", but the best guess is that THAT is what Gibson was thinking. It just fell thru the cracks while the company was starting its grand decline.

If you never have, I would suggest looking into Big, Dumb, Face. Wes Borland (guitarist of Limp Bizkit) other band, much more of an overt-comedy band. Lends credence to the idea of Limp Bizkit being a 'joke band'

Dude, that pic of the flipped Gibson looks like a big mouth. Swap pickups out and get some paint on there. You can make it look like a shark by a talented artist. Very campy, but fun :) I’m barely awake… so my comment is probably whack, haha Cheers

I like to color "turditional" "crown" pichers. Lol. Ive never liked headless guitars, it always feels to me like unbalanced, even if the body barely goes larger than the string path to the bridge, plus they always remind me of some of the more lame 80's fashions.
