I got sucked into this show after watching Shonda's masterclass. She talked about her philosophy of never being guaranteed a next season and never saving story beats til the next season, either (even if it meant having to figure out what was going to happen next between seasons). Like, she would basically leave characters' fates hanging in the balance at the end of a season just so execs could ask her "so, what happens to Olivia Pope?" and she could be like, "I guess you'll have to renew us to find out." Fucking legend.

I am so confused by this comment. those sound like opposite modalities? never saving story for the next season and leaving characters fates open ended. one is like this could serve as an ending and the other is you better renew me because there is no end yet lmao

This is giving me motivation to finally finish this show lol. Also the reason why Edison’s actor isn’t always on the show is because he’s a theater actor! He played the Phantom on Broadway along with a ton of other roles

EDISON PLAYED PHANTOM?! That changes my entire perspective on the show not gonna lie. Also I wish you the best of luck in your attempts to finish it it’s quite the doozy the first 2 seasons really are the peak 😭

@@upinurbiz Norm Lewis was also in the 2010 25th anniversary Les Miserables concert as Javert. That is where I first heard him and his amazing voice! He does quite fantastic as Javert. When he showed up in Scandal as Edison, I had a fangirl moment, since I was right in the middle of my Les Mis phase at the time 😆

I’m so sorry to be That Guy but, at the risk of ruining several hours of research into VA law, Washington DC is actually its own territory (tho not a state, it’s a real Thing) with its own laws. Anyone living in DC is subject to federal law and local regulations, not VA state law 😬 But they mostly overlap so the string colors are still relatively accurate! Sincerely, a lawyer who clearly cares too much about semantics
@IsaacMayerCreativeWorksАй бұрын
I'm sorry to be even more of That Guy than you are, but a LOT of the people who work in Beltway politics live in Virginia and commute. Northern Virginia probably has more high-level federal employees living there than DC does. (As a big, crowded city, most of the people living in DC proper are disproportionately marginalized minorities. If you're curious why DC doesn't have self-rule the way that states do, the answer is the people who live in DC aren't rich white government people.)

Whoever charged Quin/ Perkins on the basis of her inexplicable and shady behavior alone is an idiot. Haven't seen the show, but if the case was at the prelim exam stage, I can definitely see why a magistrate would toss it. But if you're already at trial, at least where I practice (and I'd imagine in most states too), you can ABSOLUTELY prove an entire case using circumstantial evidence. If the circumstantial evidence is weak, sure, a judge could grant a motion for directed acquittal. But circumstantial evidence alone is not a valid basis for directed verdict. Everyone, EVERYONE fucks up on the definition of circumstantial evidence. The way I best explain it is that if the piece of evidence in question, if factual, does not prove the assertion on its own, it's circumstantial. DNA on a murder weapon? Circumstantial, it alone doesn't prove that the weapon was used in the murder in question. Seeing the suspect leaving the scene of the murder? Circumstantial, that doesn't prove that the person committed the murder, just that they were there. But with enough pieces of compelling circumstantial evidence, you can ABSOLUTELY prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
@upinurbiz Жыл бұрын
lol yeah I mean IM NOT A LAWYER but the shows whole thing was that if she didn’t run across the country under a fake name they might not have even charged her but then Olivia has to pull major strings to get her acquitted anyway despite it being circumstantial - that said no one in their right mind would consider SCANDAL to be an accurate portrayal of United States justice.
@davids.7885 Жыл бұрын
@@upinurbiz Fair. I am a lawyer, and if I were David, I'd have just laughed my way to the easiest appellate win ever. Olivia should get her money back for how badly that judge botched the ruling. As to your point regarding no one considering Scandal to be an accurate portrayal of the legal/justice system, I can only hope you're right. Considering that juries can fall prey to the "CSI effect" despite its utterly fantastical portrayal of forensics, and also taking into account the dearth of legal knowledge amongst the general public, maybe someone watching wouldn't bat an eye at the prospect of Scandal's portrayal absent the string-pulling.
