What Was the Moment You Realized That You Shouldn't Have Shown Up to a Date?

Went in a date with a guy, he invited me. Now I’m not a “men always need to pay” person. But as he asked me I figured there’s a chance he might. I asked him “what’s best, Do you want to combine our bills and split it evenly? (I’d eaten much cheaper dishes than her had) or did you have another plan?” He looks at me like I’m stupid, flags the waitress and says “two seperate bills, I’ll take mine at the counter” he then asks me to give him a ride back home. I thought maybe he was just awkward or was afraid he’d not have the $ on his card or it may decline so I took him home and we went in. He taught me how to play MAGIC the card game, then his roommate came out of the shower in just a towel. He then takes me into his room because his roommate is walking around junk hanging out, and I see anime girl posters all over. I try to talk about stuff and sit on the foot of his (twin) bed. He tells me to stand up because I may bump something off the bed. I trying to make light of it said “ha ha, I’d figured you’d have prepped your bed to be atleast sat on. How do you manage inviting people over with just a twin bed? You must have to snuggle awful close! (We live in an area where snow storms can happen suddenly and storm stay you)” and he just responds with “uhh. They’d sleep on the couch or floor I guess. Besides. I don’t want people touching my stuffed animals.” THAT I realize is what he didn’t want me to bump off the bed. His stuffed elephant. After more awkward conversation I leave and when I get home he sends me a message saying he didn’t think it would work out or that we should even stay friends because I’m “too sexually charged” and “too forward” and that’s not appealing in a “lady”. My next date ended up being my husband so win win I guess. 😅

Very short and sweet. I'm a gay man. I'm misanthropic and quite introverted so I prefer to stay home. Going online to get a date was out of my comfort zone. Met a guy on a certain app that rhymes with cinder, he seemed solid enough. We exchanged numbers and decided to meet for drinks. After leaving the bar, he wanted to go somewhere else so I said I would drive from there then drive him back to his car. That was fair. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a baggie that had white powder in it. He tried to bring freaking cocaine into my car. I locked my doors and drove away. I got to a safe location then told him it wasn't going to work out via text and I blocked his number. I immediately unmatched with him on the app.

I never want to try narcotics or be associated with anyone who does. I saw what it did to my brother and the lengths he would go to support his habit including stealing, lying and ruining the lives of everyone he touched. He died right before last Thanksgiving.

When I realized that it wasn't a date, it was a job interview for the position of her future husband. Showed up with a written list of almost the exact same kind of questions you have to answer in a job interview, asked in *exactly* the same way as a job interview and got visibly angry when I tried to turn the discussion towards her. Last I heard she'd reluctantly stopped doing this and regularly complains about how men are all either assholes (read: have enough self-respect to leave) or losers with no ambition (read: those who don't).

My worse date with my ex was actually our last one. My dad was mad at me for not cleaning up my room, and in the middle of his tirade, my ex shows up. He was a genuinely sweet guy, and I knew he wouldn't judge me for my dad's actions, but I still felt incredibly embarrassed, and I was crying practically our entire date. For me, I had a random add on facebook from a girl who didn't live too far away. We were talking for a few days and she asked if I wanted to meet up. I said sure and that I'd pick her up. I noticed a few minor warning signs - She didn't seem too hygeinic... Like her water bottle looked grubby, and she seemed to have the same clothes on in every picture. And the same clothes when I met her. I thought maybe she was a little skint for cash, but decided to ignore it. When I dropped her off, she asked if I wanted to come inside... I entered her home and it was filthy. I'm talking 1700s style filthy. The walls were black, the carpet was thick with cat hair. It looked like it hadn't been cleaned in decades. The smell was putrid cat piss and feces. It was one of the most horrifying experiences of my life. I said I was feeling unwell and should leave as I didn't want her to catch anything from me. Needless to say I never responded to any messages again.

I got a little Schadenfraude when my 'friend' Sheena said that the first house I bought as a single woman after my divorce was "a little fricked up" because it was old, built in 1900. Then, I go over to help her clean before her daughter's grad party, and literally am wiping grime off her dining room walls, due to all the smoke. Cleaned the chandelier which looked like it hadn't been cleaned in the 6 years that they'd lived there. I think I added about 900 lumens just from wiping the glass. The house's roof shingles were literally curled up like the letter 'C' and when I helped vacuum, kept running across rock hard cat poop all over the place. Was completely disgusted and almost started crying at the thought that she allowed children to live in that filth.

My mother set me up on a blind date with the guy who had repaired their refrigerator. According to Mom, he'd seen my and my siblings' high school graduation pictures, and he had been interested in meeting my sister. My mother told him my sister was married (true) but that I wasn't, so she called me and asked me if I'd be interested in a date. Okay, it'd been years since I'd gone out, so I was interested. Met up with him at a local restaurant. I didn't care that he was older than me by about a decade and that I could see right over his bald head. But what I did care about was that he made no secret of the fact that he was simply looking for a physical relationship, which I was absolutely not looking for. We went out twice, and our second date ended with an argument about the fact that I wasn't looking for a physical relationship. Finally I told him we shouldn't see each other again, and that was it.

Spring of my senior year. Blond guy with nice brown eyes (I'm a sucker for brown eyes; what can I say) came in to the restaurant where I worked as a waitress and asked me out. He seemed nice enough and was surrounded by a group of seemingly nice regulars, so I thought, "What the heck, why not?" So I agreed. He had me pick him up, then directed me to drive us to this spot out in the woods; was thinking that we'd 'frick' (to use reddit vernacular) right then and there. I told him I needed to get something out of the car, then drove myself home. The best part? The idiot asked me out AGAIN! He routinely came in with a group of 5-6 in a posse, so when he asked me again, on front of all of them, I said, "I'm busy." He stupidly asked, "Doing what?" I answered, "I'll think of something." For all the young and old men out there. Waitresses look pretty and are nice to you as part of our JOB and for TIPS. We are not looking for dates while on the JOB!!! (most of us, that is). KNOCK IT OFF!!

I’m so glad I’ve been married for over 20 years. I can’t imagine dating someone in this day and age! I wholeheartedly believe, if you’re in your mid thirties, there’s a reason you’re single! By someone’s thirties, they’re done w/ college, and are 7-10 years into their career. If you’re single, it most likely n has to do w/ your character. I'm in this situation and I hate it. I left my BF of 8 years cause he developed a really bad drinking habit and he lost every interest for the hobbies we did together for years. long story short, he slept with his coworker the night after the break up, with who he often went out drinking. So go figure. I'm 25 and most guys in that that pool are single 30-35y.
