I already knew Velcro is actually "hook and loop fastener". I'd imagine most people don't though. I'm fascinated by the difference between US and UK English. The Band-Aid plaster joke doesn't work in the US because we don't call them plasters. They're just adhesive bandages. We also don't use "Hoover" except as a brand name. They're all just vacuums, despite the fact that Hoover is an American company.

Oh yeah, if we're going back before computers, then "Cool S" was probably the first I saw. But if we're getting technical about the use of the term meme, all language, spoken or written, is memetic. In fact, anything we consider cultural is memetic. So, the oldest I know of is the earliest burials which contained anything besides bodies. IIRC, flowers was the first-it goes back at least to _H. sapiens neanderthalensis,_ but I don't think it predates _H. sapiens sapiens._

The flash drive (memory stick means RAM to me) discussion was giving me flashbacks to having to buy Zip Disks in college that each had 150mb on them and then we never used them because the lab just got CD burners. It was the following year that USB flash drives were finally invented and I bought a 64mb Fujifilm-branded one from Best Buy and used that until I learned my brand new iPod Video could mount as an external HDD. These memories are old enough to drink at this point, which is a relief because they need one now.

My father used to work in the marketing department for an ice cream brand decades ago. When they first launched a specific type of ice cream cakes, a lot of people didn't like it due to the fact that the cake looked like it had whipped cream on the top, but that was also ice cream. So they didn't like the fact that the taste of it wasn't what their brain had imagined it to be.

If you’ve ever seen a rosé cider, that probably has red fleshed apples in the mix. And on a side note: every food can sound gross if you describe it that way. That apple is just an ovary. That tin of beans is just hundreds of embryos that were boiled alive.

Ben's joke requires a familiarity with British English that essentially won't land for most Americans, but is rather funny if you know both. The hook-and-loop fasteners is a case of over of those things where companies have to do that for legal purposes, but common usage just doesn't care. I remember gaming on 5¼" floppy disks on an Apple II in Elementary school. When it comes to memes, “I can has cheezeburger” is the first one that feels like it established memes even though there were viral things prior to that.
