[TRANSCRIPT]
It seems to me that the way that you fortify your faith in Being, life, and your own existence isn’t to try to convince yourself of the existence of a transcendent power that you could believe in, in the same way that you believe in a set of empirical facts. I don’t think that’s the right approach. I think it’s a weak approach, actually. I don’t think that’s the right cognitive technology for that set of problems. That’s more a technology that you’d use is you were trying to solve a scientific problem. It’s more something that needs to be embedded in action, rather than in statable belief. The way that you fortify your faith in life is to assume the best-something like that-and then to act courageously in relationship to that. That’s tantamount to expressing your faith in the highest possible Good. It’s tantamount to expressing your faith in God. It’s not a matter of stating, ‘I believe in the existence of a transcendent deity,’ because, in some sense, who cares what you believe? You might, and all that, but that’s not the issue. The issue, it seems to me, is how you act.
I was thinking about this intensely when I was thinking about Nietzsche and Dostoevsky. Of course, you know that Nietzsche was the philosopher who announced the death of God, and who’s a great, great, critic of Christianity, and a vicious critic of institutional Christianity, in the best sense. He announced the death of God, and he said that we’d never find enough water to wash away the blood. It wasn’t a triumphant proclamation, even though it’s often read that way. Nietzsche’s conclusion from the death of God, the fact that our ethical systems were going to collapse when the foundation was pulled out from underneath them, was that human beings were going to have to create their own values. There’s a problem with that. This is something that Carl Jung was very thorough in investigating. It doesn’t really look like people are capable of creating their own values, because you’re not really capable of moulding yourself just any old way you want to be. You have a nature that you have to contend with, and so it isn’t a matter of creating our own values. We don’t have that capacity. It might be a matter of rediscovering those values, which is what Jung was attempting to do.
I think Nietzsche was, actually, profoundly wrong, in that recommendation. I think he was psychologically wrong. Dostoevsky wrote, in many ways, in parallel to Nietzsche, and he was a great influence on Nietzsche. Their lives paralleled each other to a degree that’s somewhat miraculous. In some sense, it’s quite uncanny. Dostoevsky was obviously a literary figure, while Nietzsche was a philosopher-a literary philosopher, but still a philosopher. Dostoevsky wrestled with exactly the same problems that Nietzsche wrestled with, but he did it in a different way. He did it in a literary manner. He has this great book, The Brothers Karamazov. The hero of the book is really Alyosha, who’s a monastic novitiate; a very good guy. Not an intellect, but a person of great character. But he has an older brother, Ivan, who’s a great intellect, and a very handsome soldier, and a brave man.
What happens in The Brothers Karamazov, essentially, is that Alyosha continues to act out his commitment to the Good, let’s say, and, in that manner, he’s triumphant. It doesn’t matter that he loses the arguments, because the arguments aren’t exactly the point. The arguments, in some sense, are a side issue. Because the issue-and this is the existential issue-is not what you believe-as if it’s a set of facts-but how you conduct yourself in the world.

@Futures You asked something like this to a lot of people, presumably with the intent to find tacit evidence for your preconceptions that JP has nothing of value to say in that no one has responded, but I'll give the benefit of the doubt and go with the notion that you may want an honest response. I, for one, have learned a lot about psychology from watching his lectures: personality metrics, the psychology behind belief, the psychological metaphors in fiction, which has provided me a new eye for consuming stories, and general psychological knowledge aside from that. I've learned about a whole host of data in terms of psychological and social science studies, as well as others that he's cited. I already shared a political view with him before I knew about him, but I learned how to better articulate that view. I used to be a militant atheist, but I learned from him that religion is more important than I thought it was and can play a role without contradicting science. I picked up some public speaking mannerisms from him, most notably I no longer stand behind a desk or podium and read a speech, and instead just go in with no notes and speak my mind while focusing on the audience like he does. I've also learned that all the small pieces of advice that I hand-waved off when I was a kid whenever people like teachers or parents would say them to me are actually important, and I keep those pieces of advice closer to my attention since I've heard him thoroughly explain their true utility.
@jacobjosefsberg7824
@jacobjosefsberg7824 4 жыл бұрын
@Futures He's talked in his classes abut the environmental effects on personality during childhood, but claimed that they could never get the metrics to move nearly as much with adults. He also lays out exactly how they use those psychological metrics, some of which have margins of error comparable to that of the IQ test. The fault in them is that they are self-report, but they've been fairly accurate in predicting behavior despite that, and Peterson has mapped it onto the neuro-biology. A field having critics does not discredit the field entirely. It seems like the only thing you focused on was the self help comment. He also has roots in religious and moral philosophy, psychology, a field in which he has written over 100 papers I think it was, and also the political conversation. Also, we tried radical social change to fix the problems of capitalism in the 20th century too, don't know if you remember that. Social change doesn't always pan out so well. Despite this, Peterson doesn't object to socialist reforms, half of his political opinion is that we need those types of reforms in order to keep inequality in check, so I don't understand the point here. Unless you're claiming that people have literally zero effect on their own life, which would be ridiculous.
@scottbrown7415

@Futures way less ability? Or just plain are unwilling or unmotivated to make changes? The single most dangerous concept that Peterson has ably described to the broad public is the importance of the individual and how we view the world and our place in it. Along with the responsibilities we should understand come with the actions we take. Leftists absolutely despise the concept of the individual

@Futures Are you making a conclusion that therapy is worthless? Or that even discussion about the nature of our condition is pointless because there are so many different influences on our ability to clearly have a rational perspective? If so, then pass me hemlock. I don't see any of Peterson's video lectures as "therapy". It is the examination and discussion of the issues and influences that we find ourselves in.
@scottbrown7415
@scottbrown7415 4 жыл бұрын
@Futures I'm not against the idea of therapy through counseling. But, the effectiveness is dependent upon the willingness of the subject. The use of certain medications may also be useful in addition to the therapy. My impression regarding Peterson is that he is successfully raising a discourse about the war of the cultures we are in today. The idea of the individual as sovereign is dangerous because the Leftists/progressive/globalist types will have to crush the individual in order to make the collectivist Utopia. There's a saying that sums up the issue, Freedom means unequal. Equal means unfree. I'm an automotive technician, not a political science professor or a clinician in any of the fields of medicine. So, my efforts to understand what is going on are a continuous struggle.

I love Jordan Peterson's searching attitude, but one thing he gets wrong about "faith," and which many believers also get wrong, is to treat the word as if it means "belief." It doesn't. Faith isn't belief; it is transcendent confidence. It is, as the Buddhists say, "paramita" confidence. From the viewpoint of "faith" -- humble confidence -- one is able to walk on water, heal the sick, part the sea. It is the viewpoint which can ask a thing and have that thing manifest. But he is right about what truly matters -- that being how we behave. Behind our behavior are our attitudes and our attitudes are aimed in the direction of our souls, either toward deterministic ego, or pure free will spirit -- the true self and child of God.

You cannot understand the deep things of God without the Spirit. 1 Corinthians 2:5-16 KJVS [5] That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. [6] Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought: [7] But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory: [8] Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. [9] But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. [10] But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. [11] For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. [12] Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. [13] Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. [14] But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. [15] But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. [16] For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

By the way you love yourself entering the golden rule by the way you love your brothers and sisters you act out your faith and understanding in God through the Ten Commandments. By the blood of Christ from the understanding of the cross all other religions fall far short of that kind of love absolute sacrifice. Car loan through Christ shows perfect love. And the devil is the older intellectual brother continuously attacking us but without love you lose the fight every time. Carry on. Much love. Blessings and salvation in Christ Jesus name only

Having beliefs and having faith is very different. In his epistles, Paul focused on faith to live, not on beliefs.

In the course of history it has often happened that one or other of the imperfect religions has been taken too seriously and regarded as good and true in itself, instead of as a means to the ultimate end of all religion. The effects of such mistakes are often disastrous. Aldous Huxley, The Perennial Philosophy

Hope, enacted in a life, is the highest we might imagine and attain. That is: until the reality is encountered that Jesus is risen from the dead. Then, at once, it is clear that humans have neither the power nor the right to exist within ourselves (presuming so was the impetus of the fall into sin); and that God (who is real as discovered in the Incarnation) has endowed humanity - by means of Christ and divine grace - with God's very own right and power to exist. By means of that God, resurrected, and that gift of faith: we (who were dead) are in Christ - alive in Christ. That is upstream from, and more prominent than, any hope that might exist and be operative in a human life.

I agree that faith must be demonstrated in one's behavior but I also believe one must have faith in something. That something must be transcendental otherwise we fall into conflicts of subjectivity. Faith cannot be dependent on empirical evidence. If it did, it would no longer be faith, it would be knowledge. We cannot know that God exists. He intended it to be so. He requires that we live by faith. This is necessary so that our agency is not infringed upon. I realize that what I just said creates a dilemma in deciding what version of God one should have faith in, but that is the nature of agency.

I do not believe in a prime mover, but, that shouldn't interfere with anyone who does. Your faith is yours alone, if you choose to share it that is your choice. I am happy that anywhere along the spectrum from belief to absolute denial is a choice we are allowed to have.

Agree to dis agree. I read both Jung , Nitze, Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamozov, I found tragic, in the same way , actually,( forgive me), the impeacement madness were in. That, human nature can be twisted, and evil very powerful. In some way as Artist, painter, and women, blessed. Why? we are in alignment with the spirit, ( not dogmas, as so called Parenthood), that as a women you are the giver off life's miracle, life itself. It in some beautiful way connects you to the universe, Devine spirit, and nature itself is the manifistation off life every season. It's image. Whereas , the above mention men was constantly jousting meaning of life vs. the devine. They carry the seed to life, yet by their very nature off competitive urges, often take life. That in the name divinity has got to be very conflicting. Women are born to give, men to take. Today , some women have become like men, takers, even off life. Must be very disturbing, to both sexes. As men are suppose to also be the protector off the female, and life in the family. Both sexes, due to society, roles flipped, have become narssistic and self centered, into cults rather than the culture off community and family structure. You can analize it to death, ( figuratively speaking), I believe the Id' is contained in itself with it's not and pure purpose, when not Corrupted by intelect. There is something to be said about the Biblical Fable off Adam an Eve under the Tree off Knowledge, the serpant and the 🍎. To much off a good thing, in all matters. Undermine the meaning of Life.🇩🇰🇺🇸🐦 Algorithms...( not and)..in relation to Id....

I think this is where I've stumbled with my own struggle to have faith. So many around me will talk about proper doctrine, or fling around Bible verses, but they so rarely seem to back up their faith with real-life action -- caring for the least of these, loving your enemies, doing unto others, and all the rest. If you're the only Bible some people will ever read, what kind of impression are you leaving them? Getting your ticket punched to heaven is all well and good, but what are you doing in this life to be the hands and feet of Christ on Earth?

I listened to Jim Ron and he brought this up. When your talking to people, you should say 'we' instead of 'you' because otherwise it makes it to personal. If you say 'I' then you disconnect from the audience. So we is the best word to use. Also let us not forget that Jordan Peterson does not exclude himself in needing help and advice.

Islam (590 million by some estimates)by far has, followed by Christians and other cults. And Atheism has never killed anyone. Communism isn't based on Atheism, it is based on Authoritarian Government.

You do know that Stalin went to seminary school, right? And Hitler invoked god a number of times in his speeches and the Catholic church in Europe praised him. They even celebrated his birthday. Communism may have wanted people to replace religion with government, but it isn't based on a lack of a belief in a deity. It is forced support of the government claiming everyone is equal under that government, which we know to be totally untrue. There has never been an atheist movement that killed or murdered people because they believed in a deity. There may have been a few individuals who did but a single person can't get away with murder for long. While a cult of millions or like Islam 1.5 billion can do great damage.There has been Chirstan attrocites even in the U.S.. in the New England Colonies, people convicted of witchcraft were hanged .The scholarly consensus on the total number of executions for witchcraft ranges from 40,000 to 60,000.And the Christain bible even justifies genocide.The Biblical account of Joshua and the Battle of Jericho was used by Oliver Cromwell to justify genocide against Catholics.Daniel Chirot, professor of Russian and Eurasian studies at the University of Washington, interprets 1 Samuel 15:1-15:3 as "the sentiment, so clearly expressed, that because a historical wrong was committed, justice demands genocidal retribution."

I agree except that I also believe that God's Holy Spirit conforms you into the competent, suffering enduring man. Because who is it reminding you to stand with your shoulders back but God? Who gives the power to turn down the expedient for the meaningful? Why try to do it by yourself, when He will do it for you if you fully trust that He will? My point is proclaim with your mouth and trust with your heart, and the actions will take care themselves. Give God his credit, every good and perfect gift comes from him, not us.

I've watched ALOT of KZbin over the past couple of years and I've NEVER seen such a high percentage rate of likes to dislikes. Less than 2 percent of the people who watched and rated the video disliked it?! That's a crazy high percentage number of people who hit like?! Not surprising it's a Jordan Peterson video. Rules like the 10 Commandments are like examples/standards to be reached for and yet show us that we in our own strength.and striving cannot achieve these standards on our own... We need One who is able to enable us to achieve these standards... Only Divinity can enable us to meet Divine Standards. Only One has met those Standards and we need to have His Life in our life.

While admitting that Nietzsche pointed out that without God there is no basis for right and wrong he still makes the point that what we believe about the transcendent is irrelevant. He takes the Existentialist position that it is what you do that matters without realising that this leads directly to relativism and whatever you do is right because it is what you do and there is no objective right or wrong. The idea that "There is no such thing as truth." Is a self-defeating idea as is "good" without the transcendent source to tell us what "good" is in the first palce.

I always thought that someone like Jordan Petersen would come about and express thoughts the way i think about this subject matter of faith but for his artifice of articulation and great intellect; i come short by far. Great to have him around. Faith is oftentimes described in terms of scientific faith or biblical faith or others but over the years it has evolved to mean so much more. I think faith is a natural attribute of every human being, knowingly or unknowingly; even Richard Dawkins is walking around with it.

Perhaps belief in a set of facts is simply the segue to change in conduct with wholeness as the result; and your 'faith in life' is rather faith that God makes music from the tragically discordant notes of life on planet earth... just a thought.
