I think if they're gonna lean into the renaming of "races" to "species" they should go the full way and make half-elves and half-orcs sterile, in the same way that the hybrid offspring of two species are in real life (e.g., mules). I always kinda thought that it would be a good canon reason as to why there are only ever "half-elves" rather than quarter-elves, etc. I also think it would make half-races really quite sad, so don't know. Just thought it was an interesting caveat to the whole change to the terminology.

Weapon mastery was also a part of BECMI back in the '80s. More complex back then, with scaling properties and traits, different bonuses vs different enemies, etc. But it is something that's been part of D&D for decades.
@MarekDohojda4 ай бұрын
Was about to say same thing. I remember those little books back in the 2nd edition. I am actually always been a huge fan of SOME weapon options, just not too much. My biggest beef with Pathfinder is too much stuff, I like 5e simplicity, while I do want SOME weapon additions, I want it to be some not overwhelming.
@gavinruneblade4 ай бұрын
@@MarekDohojda Yes, that was a problem with Weapon Mastery in Basic D&D, it got complex. Like, pulling out my Rules Cyclopedia, at Master tier a shortsword gave you a 3 point bonus to AC vs 4 melee attacks, and could deflect 3 attacks per turn of any kind, with a chance to disarm an enemy in melee. That's rather a lot to track, and easy to forget the difference between melee vs range. Too complex. Cool and makes every weapon dynamic and different, but it wasn't simple, that's for sure.
@MarekDohojda4 ай бұрын
@@gavinruneblade yep. I think sometimes having a complex rules can be fun, but for a whole campaign? Too much to keep track off. It's a hard balance for sure.

Good post, just subbed. Interested to watch some of your wargaming stuff too. As a DnD player/GM since 2nd edition, I have to say that 3rd and 4th edition had a lot to recommend them. My overall favourite has to be 3/3.5. Great artwork, darker than 5e. Since the whole OGL debacle, I'm not giving Wizards/Hasbro any more of my money, and have been delving instead into third party content and OSR resources like Basic Fantasy RPG/Old School Essentials and Swords and Wizardry. That said, play what gives you happiness. One thought I had that I thought you might mention was them pushing towards playing on VTT as opposed to sitting round a table. I prefer the table to online, but think WotC is pushing VTT items as a sweetener for pre-orders.

I'm from AD&D times. This entire edition seems geared towards three things. 1) Flavor 2) Martial Class buff, Magic User Nerf 3) Destruction of Ranger (my favorite). A level 12 fighter with LUCKY as a feat gets 3 tries at every roll, if needed. The potion as a bonus action, is to help martial classes heal and attack on the same turn. I liked the fact that martial classes started stronger with Magic based classes getting stronger later on. WOTC disagrees with me. Based on what has been released, I do not like this revision. I'm currently playing a L10 sword bard/ L02 Paladin. Under the new rules, my DM would have to over-ride the Magical Secrets limitations. My Dwarf riding his war pig (Rino stats) named Kevin is going to be fun. Especially when I cast FLY. (with Greater Steed, whatever I cast on ME is cast on him). 2024 kills Kevin. What did Mr. Bacon do to them?

@@johnnnysaint01 Sorry to disagree. My last game was a half elf gloomstalker (5) Samurai (4), with elven accuracy and sharpshooter. Stealthy 50 cal machine gunner with a sniper scope. DM was stingy with magical items, but I did have a longbow of warning. I found that Hunters Mark was a trap. I was much more agile and dangerous once I started using Zephyr Strike. In a one-on-one situation, it is hard to find another class that can put out as much single round damage (6 arrows with +10 damage each 18 dex, archery fighting style added to the "to hit", with elven accuracy), with automatic initiative (+12 with ADVANTAGE). Forcing the use of a single concentration spell is a TERRABLE decision. It limits the player choice. Watch Jill from Drakenheim, but instead of rogue (one other player was a rogue) I went fighter, with guaranteed super advantage. Kenji was fun and he was the hard hitter in a three-player campaign that had to use stealth to succeed.

If I got it right, the books come out months apart, so what do you get if you get it a little earlier? The players can go through the Players Handbook, while the GM has to wait for his books? What are you going to do? Have your DM play it with you without him having the Dungeon Master's Guide? Or more importantly, without the Monster Manual? I mean sure, I have seen it done in earlier editions and other TTRPG's and it can be done, but it can be hard and often isn't much fun for the DM. And I don't think you will attract many new people being the DM for the new edition. At least not until the other books are out. So is pre-ordering really that important? Especially if you add the possible buyer's remorse to it?

I think that, generally, when a company makes a big deal out of something like changing "race" to "species" it is a canary in the coal mine, so to speak. People who get super hung up on that in particular are missing the forest for the trees at best, and have malicious reasons for it at worst; if it is a sign of bad things to come, then you have/will have way more important quality issues to critique (as you do in this video, for instance)
