We take a look at a George Lucas' interview with Bill Moyer, titled The Mythology of Star Wars, and how it affected his storytelling in the Star Wars franchise. This content perfectly expresses today's star wars. The last minute of this post watching George Lucas interview... losing the passion he had in creating this beautiful universe was heartbreaking. This is why he sold LucasFilm, this is why he left his life's work behind. He had a deep connection with his fans and a small segment of those fans made his experience unbearable for years after the prequels. Those very same fans now act as if the prequels were always their favorite and Disney ruined everything, never actually looking in the mirror to see the truth. IF the prequels received the love and admiration that it receives today, Mr. Lucas might have continued his beautiful story and we would have received the sequels that were meant to be envisioned. Star Wars isn't perfect, it never was... True star wars fans might not like all content, but we like that there is content and not 10 year gaps... I always try and make time to watch star wars content, this commentary right here, every star wars fan should listen too. Nicely done Allen of Gen Tech. Those who hate their life and took it our on George Lucas - the man who enriched so many people's lives was unforgivaable- George gave us so much but was heartbroken at this small minority of idiots who never grew up and spoiled his enjoyment of the prequels that so enriched the SW lore. watch the 'making of" video and see the effort of thousands of prople it took to bring his vision to life and you cant help but love them all for that gift.

9:50 Sadly the cycle is continuing unbroken. I've seen so many videos with titles like "Why Gen Alpha is Doomed." And as I watch I quickly see they are basically saying Gen Alpha invented temper tantrums, poor grades, and bratty kids. 99% of their content could be applied to any generation, but they act like mobile devices and Skibidi Toilet is the cause. But at the same time my dad, who is a boomer, still enjoys the new Star Wars content and doesn't hate how everything didn't stay the same as when he was a kid. He worked as a draftsman for his local county office and by the time he retired he was getting frustrated with how everything was done on computers when he had spent his whole life doing it all on drafting paper with a ruler and pencil. He didn't hate it either though. He understood the world was moving on and his way was out of date. He still did his best to keep up until he could retire.

It's funny, I remember a few years ago seeing articles about how gen z were doomed and millenials were doomed before that when I was a teenager. Also if we look at the broad age range of the star wars fanbase and the behaviour of said fanbase it's painfully clear gen alphas didn't invent tantrums or bratty behaviour and vast swathes of gen z, millenials and gen x never matured beyond em.

In one of his recent videos, he literally said “Yeah it’s bad, get over it.” That’s one of the most braindead arguments you could possibly make to defend anything.

George Lucas has always valued personal connections and family/small group bonds over institutions and large organizations. The Jedi were heroes in the original trilogy because they had been reduced to just a few individuals representing the best aspects of being a Jedi. The Jedi Order, however, would be something George would find problematic, and he would look at it critically based purely on the fact that it is an institution. Frankly, despite what a lot of the outraged critics say, The Acolyte aligns with George's Star Wars better than most of the other Star Wars shows.

@@Crocthunder She even predates the prequels. I'm only a few years older than her, and based on what I've read/seen, she was a huge fan of a lot of the Legends books I read growing up. George had a lot of influence over those early novels, so it makes sense that they built on rather than undermined his vision.

@@billylocke9633 People understanding George's vision of the Force has no bearing on whether the material is true to George's original vision for Star Wars. Right now, the only people I see pushing the idea that The Acolyte doesn't align with George's original, approved material is either pushing an agenda or isn't familiar with the original Star Wars works (or both). The fact that The Acolyte addresses the Force in a somewhat cryptic and unknowable way is exactly in line with every Star Wars project through the Prequels.

I dont dislike the Acolyte because of its relation to Star Wars lore. I dislike it because the acting is so poor, the dialogue is so bad it makes Lucas' dialogue akin to Shakespeare. I cannot stand bigots who dislike women, and women of colour especially. The treatment of the actresses in the Disney sequels on Social Media was disgusting. I had always asumed that ALL STAR WARS fans were tolerant, folk who didnt care if you were green, were covered in hair or whatever. and it was a shock to see half of the fan base are Trump bigots who spew hatred and intolerance, who targetted Kelly Marie Tran & Daisey Ridley especially. Their love of Star Wars will always have a sour taste because of those idiots. just as they hurt Jake Loyd, Terryl Whitlatch [who created Jar Jar Binks ] and Ahmed Best who played him. watch the behind the scenes video of the Phantom menace and Terryl was so excited about a character she created, as a fun character for kids - only to be so horribly insulted by a bunch of Star Wars 'fans' who expected Lucas to recreate the feeling they had as kids in 1977. but who never grew up, and whatever resentment they had with life poured out so much vitriol. Clone wars 2003 is a 10/10 for me personally. It clearly wasnt trying to have super well written characters and deep plotlines. They set out to make beautifully animated show with bombastic action set pieces and memorable fights, and Genndy executed that perfectly.

If you just watch clone wars 2003, then you can't watch the modern stuff without questioning where she is. But if you just watch Clone Wars 2008 then it makes you question why in God's name Anakin doesn't go and help Ashoka after defeating Dooku in ROTJ lmao. Dude literally knows she's going to face Maul and does fuck all about it? You cant possibly reconcile that with his portrayal in the clone wars 😂😂

Thanks again for another great thinking man's Star Wars video. I have to shout out to Urban Acolyte he studied theology in college and practices martial arts and he has a ton of old Star Wars videos talking about the life lessons to be gained from Star Wars. He disappeared from the Star Wars discourse a while back but The Acolyte has brought him back into the fray. Every fan of Generation Tech should give Urban Acolyte a chance. I would love to see these two on a skype discussion some day!

Does it even matter if Lucas would like or dislike this version? This isn’t “real” Star Wars, this is Disney Star Wars. What I think the difference between how Lucas portrayed the Jedi and how Disney is with this show is that Lucas showed them as the good guys who are flawed, which has tragic consequences. This show seems to be portraying them as more sinister, at least as far as the actions of the ones we see. You’re videos are always fair, in my opinion, even if I don’t always agree with you. And I love the subtle humor of every video. Your channel has quickly become one of my favorite SW channels, along with Star Wars Theory. The review videos are just as good, if not better, then the tech ones you do, which is how I got interested in your channel.

If people want to know the truth behind what George would think of Star Wars now, I can tell you that it would be mixed. I think it’s true of the fact that he’s open about the fact that he didn’t like the direction of where the sequels went (even if apparently a lover of Last Jedi). I think George would like a lot of the other stuff that has been made. Andor is maybe the truest representation of what George saw in Star Wars for why he made it in the first place. I feel too many people use some of his words as a weapon to paint a picture of something that’s not true or a misconception. Some of the those people aren’t even really fans of Star Wars and just want to get in on the conversation because it’ll make them a lot of money and get attention. It’s the media literacy of this franchise that has been lost to time now. Also, let’s not forget, George is still friends with everyone at Lucasfilm and has shares in the stock of Disney.

Star Wars is something people are always going to see differently. Social Media just allows others to try and force the way they see it on other people. Star Wars is like a food you either like to eat or cant stand , to each his own. The reason the original trilogy stands up is that it was only as complex as We see it individually. I'm Muslim and I've felt a religious appreciation for SW ever since I first realized it. The intended critique of the Jedi Order honestly makes that resonate even more strongly for me, because a fundamental aspect of Islam's organization is that we don't have a Church. Things were centralized during the time of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, because it had to be to survive and grow, and the decades immediately after his death were a continuation of that. But in the long run, a central authority opens the door to "ownership" of the religion, and all the issues that come with it. Muslims have suffered their schisms same as Christians, to be sure, and part of it is also theological, with the Pope's role being almost prophetic in nature. Religion, and religious sites/centres (mosques, churches, synagogues, etc.) are a necessary part of life (just look at how people without it--and even many of us with a faulty grasp--constantly seek out some fleeting source of solace, like SW and other fiction [yes I'm also guilty of this]). But they aren't eternal. They are built with a purpose, and if they fulfil that purpose or fail to, then there is no value in maintaining them. Trying to do so just hurts people.

I'm a Catholic, but I've never liked the idea of the Force as a stand in for God. How I've always seen the Force is like the Dao or a cosmic force that can't be defined but only by the ebbing and flow of the universe. Whenever I see any Star Wars media referring the Force as a diety I just flinch and can't get into it because you minimized what the Force. Referring it as female lessens the Force. Referring as male lessens the Force. The Force is a celebration of life. Life begins, Life grows and gives new form and then dies to nurture the future. Bending that flow or manipulating to situate for your own selfish desires or for the sake of it to destroy it for your own amusement is the reason why the dark side exists. Life isn't nurtured or grown. It dies and decays without being nourishment for the others. It rots and festers polluting the Force. That's how I see it.

Now as for the Darkside, .. 1980's Florida being a Southern Baptist area, and I was a 10year old Yanky Catholic that could tan as a Cuban, I'm Sicilian/German and I wasn't being treated as .. whyte .. enough. I had speech problems with stutter, glasses, and hearing difficult. What do you call an adult that bullies a disabled child ? I also had hyper fight or flight which throw me into cold sweats and shaking. " .. panic attacks .." Along with being told on a weekly bases that my grandparents were going to hell cause they were Catholic/ Lutherans. After head butting adults in their eye socket for mocking/bully about my grandparents in their personal faith in G*D, I tell them .. " I find your Lack of Faith disturbing." 2.) Now as for Life isn't nurtured or grown. My area growing up had more than a few grass grown over farm fields and grassed over dirt roads. After a few years without maintenance, dead yellow/brownish grey tone grass reeds straws. Empty Medows without green growth. I spent years shovel turning the empty woodland lots and mixing ash/manure spreading it like chicken feed. Breaking the soil for earth worms. What did that get me ? Other than a workout and away from people, ... A full belly, with all the game returning to a .. safe .. feeding/den site. Free range livestock. 3.) There were a few Darkside nexus sites, cross section where two packs of coyotes/wild dogs chase deer & other prey down for a kill. There was nearly something on a bi-weekly basis left rotting there. Still had enough remained for a bone & pelt collection. You could walk across a few spot and just .. feel .. the urge to panic run. Then I spent more than a few years practicing stone circle magic on the location. The local white tail deer buck used the location to defend himself from wandering challenging bucks. If you wanted him, you had to step into the circle of panic.

George Lucas wanted to make an entertaining movie that all ages could enjoy but he made it especially for kids. Thats why is spite of the often dark themes there's also hopeful ones as well. The minutiae of the lore wasnt the important part. The message of hope and faith was. The problem I had with Kenobi and Book of Boba Fett was the execution . Disney used to be successful at storyttelling but it keeps re-hashing old stories because that's what sells.

Let's be honest, sections of the Star Wars fanbase can be so toxic that George Lucas sold the rights to Disney, just to no longer have to deal with their vitriol. Fans drove away the creator of their favourite franchise! Do you think Lucas needed the money? This is a guy who when other wealthy locals blocked him from building a special effects studio in an exclusive neighbourhood, he turned his land into low cost housing as a petty payback. But the final word on how toxic some hard core fans can be should come from the actress who played Rose Tico in the last two sequels. If someone can contact her on her social media accounts......?

I think the big issue is that people.have stopped watching content for enjoyment, and have started watching it to e critical. If you look for problems you will find them. It makes critics a very cheap low brow profession. Worst thing is everyone wants to be a critic because social media makes is feel important.

I think it's more an issue of hooks. If you don't have a good hook into a story, you're not going to care. I remember an interesting case years ago, there was a film a while back my buddy and I saw in theaters. We normally give our quiet commentary throughout the film, either praising or hazing it. For the first half of the film we were poking fun. But in the last half, we got hooked. We stopped the commentary and just watched. We got invested, and ultimately loved the movie. To the matter at hand, The Acolyte has not sparked this. I find myself enjoying the show more by tearing it apart rather than getting hooked by any story or character. Even my girlfriend, who is much less critical than me and is easier to please with cinema, kept asking me how much longer the episode was because she was bored to tears. If you don't have a good hook(s), you make your own fun with a show.

Been here since like 2019. I was getting back into Star Wars at that time because the current official tabletop RPG came across my radar, so watching all the movies/shows in chronological order became a necessity. Generation Tech had some interesting breakdowns of ships, characters, and lore, and the presentation was mellow and thoughtful. Allen is an authentic kind of guy, not some over the top sensationalist theory presenter like is found on some of the other channels with similar topics, and that is always appreciated. The presentation is still mellow and thoughtful - but now it is deeper thinking and deeper exploration of topics. I don't need those other Star Wars channels, this one has what I'm looking for.

.. official Star Wars RPG .. WEG west end games d6 dice pool system. Then had to do a homebrew AD&D cross with TMNT, yeah early 1990's as teenagers were fun. Then WotC 3e d&D/ Star Wars came out, then 3.5e revised edition for the AotC. Then a new group of teenagers I had to deal with in my twenties, .. Must cross Wotc3e D&D with .. Harry Potter. Then do Skill Ranking of magic spells like Jedi force skills. Whatever it took to get the teenage grandchildren out of Granny's hair. Not forgetting Star Wars 4e Saga edition, which no one at my gaming shop at the time really cared for its system. I got close to 6 or 8years in my twenties playing Star Wars as an adult. Over the years, meeting people out shopping for food. They .. refuse .. to play any edition unless its current official because the rest isn't .. canon. So I tell them, " I do not deal with children under the age of thirty. Follow comics long enough or watch Star Trek, everything that has been .. recon .. over the years is just regarded as Alternate timeline realities. Except for the Princess Leia being Wookie jokes, those are canon in any reality. I loved the " Baron Fel, " comic.

@@krispalermo8133 WEG would likely be my 2nd choice. WotC Star Wars is too "D&D" for me. I'd potentially go as far as PbtA, FATE, or maybe GURPS for running/playing Star Wars. Power creep can be bad in any game with "progression"..and that is embedded in the design of many RPG systems. The issue with "canon" is all about the premise: hey, all this lore exists, some may be true and accurate, while some may be false or otherwise inaccurate. the story at this table, is about your characters...not all these other characters in star wars "canon". This is why I prefer a more cinematic, narrative system which is what the "current official version" was designed to emulate - taking inspiration from previous editions and other game systems pre-2011. The spirit of Star Wars always begins at A New Hope. Yeah, I prefer gaming with humans who have fully formed brains, so thats like age 25+. A little life experience, a little maturity, a better sense of how to interact respectfully - including a bit of self control.

Star Wars. Biggest film to toy action figure gabble in history. Funny thing about .. Star Wars .. before the renaming as " A New Hope." a.) Basic concept ideal, made into a comic and short novel. Since the art was still 1970's space fantasy Flash Gorgon or Buck Rogers along with the Misleading movie posters. People went in thinking/expecting one thing and they got something completely different beyond what anyone has seen before. Such as Carrie running into the hanger bay, on the big screen/ drive in movie theater. I was too young to understand. There was a few reasons Why teenage boys and men bought tickets to rewatch the movie again. b.) As for the movie itself, OMG watching the multiple behind the scenes filming and all the edit cuts to get something watchable. So you had at the time The Official Edited, where the book follows all the action in the movie. Word for word. Like the Kenton Batman movie bubble gum card collection set. c.) Then something about the radio drama, or audio caset books of the time. Remember the Read Along plastic records books that had a near plastic texture pages ? d.) Now you have the Novel, which briefly cover Lukes's life, education from the local imperial garrison. Along with uncle Owen views of Luke slacking. Luke, " I already met the stander of a sand trooper and recon scout speeder rider." Owen, " Oh, so instead of you and your friends doing nothing and bike racing all day, you decided to con the empire into Paying you to do nothing and ride around all day." ... stated as a Very OLD joke. Even the garrison commander wanted Luke to wait a couple of more years to mature and lose his whine. But he can't wait much longer to enlist to get career bonus. If he is conscripted and he will be due to his skills & grades he end up with few career advancements. What you see on film is Official Canon, .. but the book filling in the nature of what life is like. e.) Film test footage to set the hallway running scene with the .. twins. The actors not treating it as a live take were giggling as they ran, and ran straight into the wall falling over each other. The overhang shot, Powes in Vader suit had his glove off and pointing his fingers as they ran to line up their movement cause he was .. bored. So .. they wrote in novel that Vader was waiting in their passing and cause them to run into the wall by Clouding their perception of the hallway walls. Making of the film into the novel, in house production joke. 2.) Other than Han shot first or not, .. the point made in film was in the location .. no one cared and that was what life was like there. As for Kenobi cutting that guy's arm off, .. even as a " As a 6year old " if Jedi are in hiding you Don't Flash a Jedi weapon ! You use a taser to Not draw Imperial attention to you. a.) Newpaper comic page, and Sunday comics later reformatted into what later came know as Marvel Classic Star Wars comics. In short, .. Jedi lightsabers had .. bounties .. on them by the empire, and black-market prizes to those in Hutt space. b.) Other than the OT movies, everything else about Star Wars and it going into a RPG, was through the comics and G.Lucas cash grabbing on D&D. Videos games were still a sad stated during the late 1980's. I was 12years old, well I was 11yo and going to be 12 by end of summer 1989. I got a hold of Star Wars magazine and it advertise WEG and how to story board a Star Wars comic or novel into an RPG. My parents at the time were still in their Southern Baptist Church control freak stage and the B.s. of the Satanic Panic. Yeah, life was fun, FU. If you read all of this, god bless your sweet heart. c.) Then the Thrawn trilogy came out and we got Mara Jade.

@@krispalermo8133 Imagine a world where Flash Gordon was the hip sci-fi adventure franchise...I shudder and grimace. I've got like 5 years on ya. I saw ANH in the theater sometime in '78, it ran for over a year in 1st run theaters and then another year or more in 2nd run theaters. I got all the stuff minus maybe 2 or 3 figures for christmas...I was blown away by the scope and how fresh it was in comparison to *all* previous sci-fi I had seen. Heh, makes me think of Spaceballs, Mel Brooks agreed to not make merchandise at GL's request..thus the scene at Yogurt's cave. Yeah, the original script was rewritten quite a bit and there were certainly other media besides the film that may have used some of the notes (or just plain embellished, unauthorized) in addition to the script. It is said that Star Wars was "saved in editing" by GL's then wife. Else, it might have been a bust and we'd not have seen even the Holiday Special. The sensation exploded in many directions, for sure. While I do think some of the released deleted scenes for the film would've been fine to leave in, I'm sure there were many more that never got released because they just didn't add to the film in any positive way. Some of it was seemingly just GL awkwardly projecting his own life onto characters, with the racing and such. For sure, the mysterious "clone wars" and why this hermit on a remote world now wants to go save the galaxy at the beckon call of some hologram girl. That stuff is certainly something interesting to explore, and that new RPG sensation that had people's panties in a bunch was precisely the kind of vehicle in which to make those explorations of this fantastic "new" far away galaxy that existed a long, long time ago. Kids have always wanted to roleplay - cops and robbers, cowboys and indians, hostess and guests, and so on. A game with clear rules and a randomizer, in which nerds tell stories with each other. It is too bad about the satanic panic...but there were sci-fi and other genres that didn't have angels and devils. Still a lot of fantasy, and exploration in that fantasy, would likely have been also demonized by the closed minded or those who otherwise just couldn't understand the hobby. BTW, in Obi-Wan's defense, those were two really bad dudes and one of them had just drawn a blaster, both were fine with killing. Obi-Wan didn't expect to be on-planet for very much longer anyway. So it did make sense to use his lightsaber, from a certain point of view. I definitely stand by my opinion that the original film is the heart and spirit of Star Wars, and from that sprang all these other stories, embellishments, and various fan-fictions. I even consider further GL contributions as fan-fiction, but a higher order of fan-fiction than some novel writer or tv producer/writer. LOL, read, parsed, replied. ;)

I'm an atheist today, but was raised Presbyterian. And let me tell you they are a chill bunch. One of my favorite sermons was actually about the church becoming more like Buddhism in how it attracted people and operated. It was pretty cool to see a pastor stand there and outright say "so yeah we kinda more do this other religion a lot these days and that's actually a good thing so be cool about it". Star Wars, and Star Trek do these things. Some of the biggest issues with much of the recent Disney Star Wars is that the level of care being put into the productions is not equal across the board. The people making the sets, the costumes, the scenery, the effects...they are all putting everything they have into those things, and it shows. But the writers, the producers, the actors? They are often phoning it in, inserting agendas that have no place in Star Wars, or putting whatever they want into the story, continuity and lore be damned. And then the whole piece is diminished and considered worth less for it. I'm honestly glad that you find good in Modern Star Wars, because the people who did their job right suffer far more than the ones that did their jobs poorly. "What are you previous projects?" asks an interviewer of a film concept artist. "Oh, I worked on the Acolyte." "Oh, that crappy Disney show that ruined Star Wars and had terrible reviews? Sorry, not interested. Next!" Doesn't matter if the bad wasn't that guy's fault. No one remembers the show for the visuals, just the plot. It is probably to the point that most of these people would rather leave these projects off their resume, if they could.

What makes George Lucas a genius to me is that he took transcendent themes and put a modern spin on them. Put the beginning of Ben and Vader's duel on the Death Star side by side with a Kendo match, and you'll see a big similarity. Watch WWII fighter planes dive in to a target and you'll see where he go the scene for the X-wings making their approach on the Death Star. There are many more examples.

My problem with the Acolytes' portrayal of the jedi is not that they are portrayed as flawed, arrogant, or corrupt. Its that they are stupid, selfish, and incompetent. There isn't a single jedi in the Acolyte who is smart or who does the right thing. The point of the jedi we grew up with is that they were caring and idealistic protectors whose idealism made them unable to anticipate how their flaws could be used against them. The Jedi Order in the Acolyte has no redeeming qualities. It isn't an organization worth protecting or admiring.

I saw the original Star Wars as a 10 year old in1977. It was amazing and magical. The fact of the matter is that I'll never end a 10 year old boy in 1977 again, and will never feel that magic again. And that's okay. I'll always be grateful for my experience. I just wish when the prequels came out, the knuckleheads my age would have realized that they were in their 30s, and not 10 year olds. Maybe Lucas would not have sold Star Wars.
