We appreciate it! Very glad you found the video valuable. I’m glad Jason mentioned the 2 cold cases. It’s a harsh reality, but one that must be addressed through good investigations.

Hey Scott. I’m interning at my local Sheriff’s office. I’ve already seen some heartbreaking things and your videos about wellness have been a tremendous help to me. You’re doing God’s work and saving lives. You rock!!!

I spent about six years as a full time investigator during my career. I did not work for a large metropolitan police department, I worked for a municipal department in the suburbs of a large Midwest city. We were general assignment investigators, and investigated whatever was assigned. One thing that you can count on as an investigator is your never caught up. You will always have open cases that cannot be cleared, and new cases land on your desk everyday. That doesn't mean you can't clear some of the cases assigned to you, but many are unsolvable and all you can do is give it your best efforts. I enjoyed my time in the bureau, but it can take up alot of your time and personal life. I did work some homicide cases with the regional Major Case Squad which was a great experience, but that is for another discussion.

I appreciate you sharing that. It’s helpful in supplementing what Jason said, to give more clarity to those thinking about whether or not to go the detective route

The last part about the family was awesome. Thank you for that and “getting ahead” of it. Have those conversations with your spouse and kids. “Mommy or daddy is helping someone who doesn’t have a mommy or daddy anymore and is hurting.” But in the end, your spouse and children are yours. The case is the department’s. No matter how many cases you solve, bad guys you put away, it’ll never equal being there for the spouse you chose or being a dad or a mom.

Dear Scott You have probably never received a question like this before, but I would be very grateful if you could give me your opinion and perhaps a few tips. First of all, I'm not American, I'm German and 24 years old. However, I have long harboured the dream of emigrating to America to live there. I am more than aware of the challenges involved, but my motivation is relentless. At the moment I am studying for a double Bachelor's degree in co-operation with Washington State University. Accordingly, I will also have a degree from this institution. The profession of police officer has fascinated me for a long time and I would be infinitely grateful if I could have the chance prove myself. How realistic do you think this endeavour is and how would you advise me to proceed? Sincerely Arthur

Hi Arthur. Thanks for asking. I think California is the only state that allows people who have permission to work within the USA to become police officers. I know where I worked, you had to be a US citizen. I know this presents a hurdle, but hurdles can be jumped over, knocked down, or walked around so don’t give up. 👍👍
