Thank you for the details! I almost bought a steel door but now I’ll get fiberglass. You may have saved my sanity.

I never use anything smaller than an 36 inch door even on interior doors.

I'm looking for a new exterior door, I have a steel door now, I didn't realize the door would swell if it heated up. Does fiberglass doors with stand direct sun? My back door gets really hot from the south to west sun. My deck can reach a temperture of 120 degrees.

What is the frame or jam made of? I'm looking for a door with a jam that is made of composite so that it does not rot. It will bet all of the elements and our current door jam has rotted because it is wood. The door is fine but the bottom third has rotten out.
@KevinCoyaselfreliantlife3 жыл бұрын
It is made of wood. You need to keep it painted.

curious to know, if it does with temperature? We have a hallow metal door and in the summer the heat comes through as if the door was open, and in the winter, the cold comes in as it was open. So want to choose a door that will help with this issue.

Fiberglass doors are insulated.

Fiberglass is durable but not as secure as steel. One good kick and the fiberglass door is breeched.
@KevinCoyaselfreliantlife4 жыл бұрын
No door is stronger than the frame and lock. Steel doors can be kicked in if the frame is weak.

Steel doors are thin steel stamped over a wood core and when I say thin I mean paper thin...
@zichragland88804 жыл бұрын
Nice video. Is this a wood core door so that you could install a doggie door? I am wanting to install a new door but will need a doggie door and don't necessarily want steel for some of the reasons you mentioned. Thanks

We built our dog door in the wall next to the door. The dogs love it in and out 40 times a day.

@@kevinwilmore4939 That has a lot to do with the frame and deadbolt. If you have a solid place for the bolt to insert it will be harder to breach.

I'm curious about the strength between the three. I realize that much of it has to do with length of screws, hinges and whatnot. But, the strength of the actual door material. Which one holds up best?
@KevinCoyaselfreliantlife6 жыл бұрын
I have had wood metal and fiberglass doors over the years and I favor the fiberglass for it's low maintenance and overall durability.
