Aaaaand...these are the reasons I decided to teach college instead. I can’t even tell you how amazed I am at k-12 teachers and what they are able to achieve on a daily basis. I think this is why I watch k-12 teacher videos even though I teach higher ed. However, I still get the “entitled student” mentality in my classes, so I’m happy to hear you addressing that. I hope more teachers address it as well since I’ll be getting some of those students in my classes at the college level. Anyway, thanks for sharing and keep up the great work! 🤗

Chitown Jay It depends. For many community colleges, a Master’s is enough. Universities usually prefer a PhD, but it can depend on the subject. I have colleagues who teach English composition at university with an MA only.

I am SO excited to be a teacher. My mom is a teacher (she's been teaching for almost 30 years) and has given me SO many heads up. Another important thing to consider is where you're working and the home environments of children. Nobody prepared my mom for hungry and cold children, but every year she buys a few coats for the kids in need and will send them home with canned goods so they don't go hungry over the weekend/break. You seem to love your job so much, and I hope that I'll be ready for it when I start. 2 years to go for me!

Awww it's so true. Every area has different types of children & family backgrounds -- one of my coworkers always had to stock her classroom with food because many of her students would come to school starving. I'm sure you will be AMAZING as you learn from your mom too ;) let me know if you ever have any questions, too!

The kids may be able to help you about that, you may become comfortable with them. But don't forget that they are gonna need someone who can teach them the material. As long as you feel like you know what you're doing they wont be able to tell the difference. Yes you'll have kids who aren't the nicest but at the end of the day they are their in the classroom to be taught by teacher who cares for them. So don't let that be an obstacle, you may be one of the best teachers out there, just think about the children though. Like its gonna be a responsibility, so as much as its appeals to you, make sure you are in it to win it!! And I'm not sure why it appeals so much to you haha, but I hope you can figure this out, I say pray about it, not sure if you believe in God, but hes near so I hope you are not stressing about it.

@@asiajana4314 ahh I'm not sure why I didn't see this earlier - thank you sm :) you're right though - sometimes I question if I'm in it for the right reasons, as I often forget how much of a responsibility teaching truly is. but like you suggested, I hope that if I'm able to bond with the class even a little bit, that may help ease my anxiety. I'm sure I'll figure it out anyhow, I still have some time to decide if I want to pursue this pathway. I think it depends on which level of kids you might understand the most, how much you know about giving their altitude of education, and who might be easier to teach. I'm not saying that any of them are going to be easier to teach but, there are possibilities that one level (grade) might be easier to get along with or communicate with

I’m only 12, but I want to teach English Literature. You get to see different peoples opinions, you get to explore the meaning of a text in 30+ ways! I want to work with High School children, as I can relate more with them. Depressed kids, and anxiety kids in a class is sadly quite common these days.. I’ve suffered with it for 9 years so I can pretty much pick up on stuff if they are suffering with it. ( Many people I know/Seen suffers with it, I’ve seen them change or have a habit of doing something when they are in the worst. ) Also! I’m the quite kid in my class, and hate to stand up and talk in front of others so I can also relate to them on that to. I would call myself a calm and easy going person, so I hope the children can notice on the first day they have with me, they can be like ‘ we have Miss Sweet next! ‘ I want them to be able to feel safe and happy when walking into my classroom.

0:52 this is actually a really interesting perspective that I think most people (including me) don't really think about. I have vivid memories of try hard teachers who I just did not gel with and obviously now in hindsight feel bad for but whom I also respect because they never let my indifference effect their work ethic. They never stopped trying to help me understand the material even if I didn't laugh at their jokes during our one on one sessions, they always let me take social breaks in their classes if I needed them and just in general consistently showed up for me and my classmates. Thanks so much for this great video!

Thanks for making these vids! I made a switch to the elementary education major once I got a part time job in a school district making money for college and I enjoyed going to work every day. I have noticed the entitled self image some of them have... I'm still learning how to address it, it isn't easy at all. What made me realize this was a good path for me was the fact that even if a kid is acting out or behaving inappropriately, I still care about the kid and want to build a relationship. I like seeing that progress so much. This was something I didn't expect of myself! I hope this really is the job for me!

I thought I wanted to be an elementary school teacher and finished my first 2 years of community college taking classes in that degree, but I have heard a lot of negatives from teachers who have left the field after a few years. I am nervous that if I don’t like it then my major would be too specific to do something else. I was thinking after whatever bachelors degree I get, I could get a masters in school counseling and work with high schoolers. I know your actual bachelors degree doesn’t really matter for becoming a teacher as long as you get a multi subject credential, so maybe I should pick a different bachelors, but I don’t know what else to do!

Hi Maya! Thanks for these videos! I currently teach high school English and I'm thinking about moving down to 4th or 5th grade next year. I taught Kinder for one year and got so burned out that I got physically sick. They were WAY beyond my energy level!! I'd like to move down to 4th or 5th because I don't REALLY love teaching high school level literature or writing OR constantly grading essays. Also, I feel like I put SO much effort, time, money, and heart into my plans and activities and most of the kids just don't care or don't respect it. I'd like to feel appreciated! I want a group of kids who are still somewhat excited to learn, still care about pleasing their teacher, and will laugh at my Spongebob jokes. However, I'm nervous because I am fairly low-energy and introverted. Being around constant noise and commotion tends to wear me down. I'm worried that I won't be able to keep up with 4th or 5th graders and I'll be exhausted. Do they require constant attention? Or could I theoretically give them DEAR/silent reading time, or small group activities that I could just walk around and monitor? It SEEMS like it could potentially be a great grade level for me, I'm just worried about them being too high-energy or needing more than I can physically give. I hope that makes sense. Thank you for your advice!

The only thing i need to work on, is talking in front of people, but i do tend to bons with young kids, and I love school. Im also very creative, and so i really cant wait to be a teacher snd make a difference in a child's life.

I disagree with an education degree is just good for education. Both of my parents have people who gave up teaching and used their education degrees to get into typical business desk jobs and especially leadership rolls because teachers have to lead people so it’s very transferable.

Perhaps if you are teaching older levels yes but that is a very rare situation... it's a well known thing that if you go into education it's hard to leave because it's not a degree that transfers to other professions. Particularly in elementary, you have to know it's what you want because you have to stick with it! Going back to school later in life for a new degree is tough and in some places it takes 5 years of university to become a teacher

I'm still trying to figure out what I want to do in life, and I've considered education for a very long time. I've had a lot of expirience with it throughout my life, as my family has three generations of academics. It's really important to me, so I help my little siblings with homework sometimes, and tutor other kids from my school as well. Sometimes a teacher will have a project where we have to do a mini-lesson for the class on a subject we're learning about and I really enjoy doing that. I've also been told that I would make a fantastic teacher, but I'm still not sure. I really want to teach older elementary kids if I did end up following that path, but I'm worried I'll hate it later on and wished I did something else.

Do you know any teachers that are new are also older due to a career change. I have been in healthcare my whole life, (age 20 to 34) I used to volunteer as a teenager at an afterschool program near me. Then, I started my A.A at a junior college for education, then switched to Nursing. Worked in a pediatric nursing home for almost 15 years, always loved kids, esecially training their family members about machines, medication, care so they could do it when they get gome. I always wanted to become a teacher, I just put it in the back of my mind because back in early 2000's, I'd hear of massive teacher layoffs and insecurities in the field, the main thing that made me switxh was a discouraging comment from someone whose opinion I valued. They said to me: "Those who can't do, teach. Why don't you invest in a career where you'll actually learn something, and have security". I cowardly changed majors to a "safer" field. I love nursing , but there has always been something about teaching that calls my name . To anyone out there that wants to make the switch to teaching , JUST DO IT. School is expensive, but It's so worth it.

Keys to surviving teaching..................and or make a career that lasts more than 5 years. 1. Be an alum of the school you want to work at, it gives you an employment edge up on others 2. Nepotism, be related or marry someone with influence at that school or district. 3. Know how to write grants for your school, it takes extra work, but really you have no other choice. 4. Do no over qualify yourself past a masters degree, it will count against you in the long run for retention. 5. Know school board member(s) 6. Attend the most affiliated/influential church in the area 7. Coach, because tenured teachers feign at the thought of doing extra work. 8. Hang out around the front office during your planning. 9. Know CPR 10. Teach kids effectively, possess passing scores, and maintain classroom management.

And if you take classes consistently in college (fall, spring, AND summer semesters) it will cut down the number of years. Speak with a guidance counselor but don’t over work yourself. How do I decide between high school and middle school education? I love both for content but cannot decide.
@mayaleex3
@mayaleex3 6 жыл бұрын
Hi! Hmm I guess it would depend on how deep you'd want to go into a specific content. For example, if you were to teach Science, would you be comfortable teaching it more at a middle school level or HS level? In terms of personality, middle schoolers may be more immature but high schoolers can also hit the point of being apathetic. It really does depend though!

As a teacher, you need to understand the brain and how trauma affects the brain. Many of your students and their parents will have high (3 or higher) ACE scores which affects them daily and ultimately how you teach and build relationships. You should also take the ACE test yourself (You can find it online) to see what your score is, because if it is high, you could have your own triggers that need to be addressed. Also, read as much as you can about fixed vs. growth mindset, Carol Dweck the mindset guru. Anymore, every book I read refers to her and her studies and work. It is such a blessing to be a teacher!! Good luck and believe that you have something valuable to give to your students because you do--- the gift of *you* ! 😃

I am planning on becoming a high school Bible teacher at a huge private school in Houston and I am wanting to know what I need to do as far as preparing for teaching certification. I want to understand the right standards of the process because I know when I got my Masters in Youth Ministry, my tassel was light blue which indicated the education field. They considered Youth Ministry more in the field of education than just theology in which the tassel is a scarlet color. Above all of that, I just need to know how to become certified just to teach Bible because I will not be teaching any other subject, but wonder if I will have to take a test in the other subjects, or is there a specific test for just teaching Bible?

Awww. I think it could be two factors. One, is something else going on in your life that obstructed your ability to enjoy your internship? To be honest though, if it's something you love, the internship could have been like a nice escape. For example, I love working out so even if my life is stressing me out, going to workout is my way of escaping and feeling present. I think it's good to self reflect on this experience and if you feel like you wouldn't want to teach, that's totally okay and you CAN change careers :)! It's not too late!

I am feeling so conflicted. I majored in English with a marketing minor. I decided I didn't really want to do marketing, and my teachers told me not to become a teacher unless I loved it. Right now I'm a service coordinator which has it's ups and downs. Some days I just want out and teaching, although people say you don't make much, would pay more than what I'm making now. Except the work load averages to about 50 hours a week and I would have to take out more loans to take the transion to teaching course. I have changed my career plan quite a few times without anything jumping out as "right" for me. I don't want to take on more loans only to regret it later. Any advise?

I'm currently a graduated high sch student n I wanted to head to Music In Teaching course in Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, which is gg to lead me to become a primary sch (middle sch) music teacher one day. But the problem is, I feel that teaching is not a career that is right for me due to my personality 😅 I am quite introverted, and I have some flaws that a teacher *shouldn't* have. I am also aware that I don't have enough passion for teaching 😥 What drives me to go for Music In Teaching is that I was swayed by the salary of a primary school teacher and I can enjoy primary school holidays like I used to when I'm studying in primary school. However, I know this is not a right mindset of mine and such factors already determine that I am not suitable to be a primary school music teacher. 😥 However idk why I still want to go for this course and to become a primary school teacher despite all these negative factors. 🤷🏻‍♀️😥 Just a qn, is it possible to change my personality for the better, change my mindset and increase my passion for teaching in order to be suitable to be a primary school teacher?? 😥 I need help.
