Thank you! Well said. First of all, the gay standards for older and old are all over the map. Some think anything over 25 is older and 35 as old. I still think one hard fact is in place in the queer community: the older one gets, the more invisible they become. If the only option is "daddy" culture, then that only reinforces the age related prejudice that exists in gay culture. Also, some people want relationships, not just sex. Sex is fine, but what comes after it determines relationship potential. If you are a middle-aged gay man, the odds are very likely that you have a lot working against you if you are twice their age. It's not that it is impossible, but with each passing year it becomes more unlikely you can build on that common ground, and more likely both are to be unhappy. I have had friends on both sides of the fence of the issue, and it is really hard to not make an ass of yourself when you are about to retire from your job and your current partner is a sophomore in university. It's a bet you will lose.

This is a really interesting video. When I was 25, I used to really like guys in their 40s and 50s for some reason...I think it was mostly because they were better spoken, were a little classier, but also because older men just looked more like men (as opposed to boys). Oddly, now that I’m 45, it seems like the guys who seem to show the most interest in me are in their early to mid-20s...but they’re usually just nice eye candy to me and I don’t have much attraction to them. Some of them are very mature, very well spoken, and quite intelligent...but I just don’t get excited by them. At 45, I’m actually noticing that I like guys 10-15 years my senior. I’ve had people tell me that I probably have/had issues with my own dad...but it was actually the opposite. My dad was a blue collar worker who took my brother and I fishing and crabbing, we used to work on my truck together (he taught me to change my oil when I was in high school), and he was your typical American man. When I came out to him, the first, and only, question he asked me was, “are you happy with your boyfriend?”...and when I said, “yeah”, he replied with, “that’s all that matters to me, and that’s all that should matter to any parent.” So I definitely didn’t have any dad issues. PS - yes, that’s a current picture. One of the perks of being Japanese...you look young for quite a while. Hehe.

As someone over 60, the one thing I would tell anyone younger - and that means all types - is that youth in itself is attractive. It is far from the only attractive thing, but youth in all its qualities, including energy, optimism, health, curiosity (and all as much as looks), is attractive. What you make of those things is up to you; there are definitely young people who walk through life with a frown and an attitude, and no matter how beautiful are as appealing as yesterday's leftovers. But it is worth knowing that your youth is an asset far outside the bedroom. I've also found that there are as many plain people as pretty ones who will only give the time of day to those they feel meet some standard of beauty. It should be about attraction but the sad truth is that if you don't fit a certain look no is ever interested. When I was in my 20's no one older hit on me or younger for that matter. I went through my 30's into my late 40's and nothing changed. I think generally people go for a certain number of things that they look for in another person and there are some of us around that just don't make the first tick box. I am 47 and have embraced my inner daddy. My experience has been that the majority of the guys who hit on me are no older than 30. That as it is stated in the video, "I find a lot of guys my age are not interested in guys my age" to be very true, and I am ok with that. Age is just a number. Love is love and comes in all forms. To me, it's all about the attraction, commonality and how well two people get along. So, why limit yourself to an age bracket! However, it IS a little intimidating at first beig the older man because I don't know the motives of the younger guy. Is he seeking monitary generosity from me for this time and companionship, or is he wanting to date me for me as a person. When I was in my 20s, guys my age were not datable. So, I went for the older man... 35+... I NEVER looked for the sugar because I was more interested in the guy, not his wallet. To note, I don't have daddy issues. My father was present from the day I was born until I was 38, which is the age I was when he passed. To support my "age is just a number" attitude, a good friend of mine is married (legally) to somone who is 23 years his senior. They've been together for almost 20 years and are as much in love now as they were when the first started dating. My friend has even legally changed his name. My friend's 43 and his husband is 65/66.

I think the actual issue with age difference in dating (for me at least) has to do with aging at the same rate. If I were to date a guy who is significantly older or younger than me then as we grow old together there is a very high likelihood that one of us will die way before the other person. I don't know if I can handle that heartbreak of living a large portion of my life without the person I intended to spend the rest of my life with. Sure, there is no guarantee that dating someone around the same age as you fixes that problem, but the chances are a whole lot better.

I hope to be there someday. I'll be honest though; I think that most of my sexual hangups come from body image issues, fear of rejection and/or being used, and a constant, unavoidable confusion in my brain between sexual intimacy and emotional intimacy, i.e. love. My partner has some of the same issues, but we can both admit to loving each other and we talk about falling in love. I think my greater need is emotional stability with someone rather than a mind-blowing, earth-shattering sexual experience. If it makes any difference, I've never gone all the way with anyone. He doesn't need my "help" and doesn't want it. I don't want someone I have to pay in order to have companionship. We have an immense amount to talk about and have lots of things in common. We make a great couple, and he is the most amazing man I have ever met. Does he call me "Daddy" sometimes? Of course. I actually like it, and I call him "Boy". But it's all done in good fun. brandonlee rushman i have always looked younger, so i have always attracted younger, but younger people are seldom very interesting. being interesting is important, you sound well rounded, so good for you. probably part of why you don't want to date 20 yr olds who are only interested in the latest Beyonce single. gisforgary ugh people think I'm 16 sometimes -_- funny cause I don't hang out with people my age. I hang out with much older. Like forties and fifties. Much easier to talk to. brandonlee rushman lol -- i started going to gay bars in the 80s when i was 15 and looked 11 and i got lots of free drugs. good times, i think, maybe. most of my long term friends from the 80s are around my age though. i'm a gypsy so i got more issues with you -- at least give me a museum or something.

This video totally eluded the sore topic of the ageism among our community which hurt so many older gay men who try to meet on gay apps. Its not all daddies and young twinks who wants them. Theres a lot of disrespect from younger guys towards older guys.

Agreed but I think the lack of respect is what is problematic on these apps. Exactly the same deal as with :"No Fats No Fem No Asians" bullshit. You CAN be unattracted to either of these "categories" but theres a way to say it.
