My theory is that you were still holding forward and by the time you got out of the ring, you were still able to move, but the camera started to move as well, and since direction is determined by the where the camera is facing. You accidentally moved beside the ramp leading to your fall.

You get movement back for shadow before you get to the platform. Get gud and you can use that a lot to lower your times

My recording software Medal allows me to record in 360p. I only do this just to avoid lag in games because recording in higher quality lags a lot of games.

I like taking multiple pathways and perfecting them. Helped a lot in Sonic Gens when I accidentally fallen to a lower route.

TBF, I wish they had more extra nuggets to find and incentivized looking at all paths even lower paths because almost always the stuff is in hidden in shortcuts. I love me multiple paths in a boost level.
