Uh, one dimensional before Tom Hiddleston? I think you're missing Journey into Mystery. Post Siege Loki was before MCU Loki ever got popular and kid Loki was literally an attempt by Loki to reinvent himself. He knew that actual him would never not fall back into the same traps of personality so he made a new him. And new him was an amazing hero, that was looked down upon by his people from the get go because he is Loki and then had to have a battle of smarts and will against his former self that set a trap for him. What I'm getting at is that anti-villain Loki isn't a response to Tom but rather Tom is a response to that Loki whom had an ending I'd point out was actually tear jerking. I've almost never cried reading a book, but I cried reading that one. "Damn me. Damn you all." That's why to this day people will debate the ending of that series, because it was beautiful and it was heart breaking and a rebuff of the idea that the status quo won't always come back and that such a thing might actually be terrible.

The way I always saw the Joker was a mix of the 'super sanity' thing and Killing Joke. Its not that he has no motivations, its that due to the super-sanity and 'reinventing himself each day' he basically 'remembers' a different backstory each time. The backstory in the Killing Joke was honestly what he believed happened that particular day, and his motivations were based on that, trying to prove one bad day can break a person. But the next time they meet up, he's reinvented himself and has an entirely different remembered backstory that informs his motives. Which would make him completely unpredictable, because if you did manage to figure out what that version of him thought he was motivated by, it would be entirely different the next time.

For people who want Mister Freeze to be on this list: correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't his nuance and motivation created in the TV series and not in the comics?
@Outside855 жыл бұрын
It was. And he was massively rewritten from the original version which was just another robber with a cold-gun. Also, while the TV version was imported into comics, it never really became as good, it was just kind of there... and then the New 52 happened and Victor became insane and Nora had nothing to do with him before being turned into an icecube.
@mrrd44445 жыл бұрын
It's what I thought! It doesn't make sense for him to be on a "best motivations" list specific to comics when his motivations were TV series based.
@tulobob5 жыл бұрын
I think Apocalypse should be on the list. Not the movie version though. Even though he could single handling kill the X-Men and avengers, because he is so powerful. He chooses not to, to test them all, because he believes in the natural order that only the strong should survive.

I can’t believe people are questioning the fact that The Joker belongs on this list. His depiction in The Dark Knight was truly terrifying because his motive was the introduction of chaos; unrelenting, uncompromising and impersonal chaos. He could not be bullied or reasoned with. He could not be bought or identified. He wanted to bring about the downward spiral of society without actually benefitting from it. He isn’t evil for power or glory: “Some men just want to watch the world burn”.

I never knew that X Men was supposed to mirror the civil rights movement. That’s actually really neat and makes me respect Marvel even more than I already had. Thanks for that little fact
@Paulafan55 жыл бұрын
Stan Lee was "the man" for a reason. He created, or co-created, Daredevil (a blind superhero), Black Panther, X-men (which was an analogy for the civil rights movement)... And the fact he and Kirby aren't getting more credit for Black Panther is a little sad.

Are we really not going to address that the intentions of actions don't justify horrible things? Magneto's absolutely a villain, he's killed countless innocents and killed or tortured just about every beloved member of the X-Men. Sure he may have his reasons, but that doesn't make his actions redeemable
@Bluesit325 жыл бұрын
Really? I only remember him torturing Wolverine...and never killing any X-Men (unless you count the one that was retconned into being Xorn).
@Bluesit325 жыл бұрын
And as for redeemable actions...he once captured the Red Skull, put him in a small underground room with six months of water and sealed him in. That pretty much wipes the slate.

While his methods in doing so are...strongly undesirable, I support Ra's reasons for doing what he does. Even in the real world, humanity is destroying itself. Global warming, all manner of pollution, political criminals on both sides of the spectrum and worst of all, humans becoming slaves to technology are all very sound reasons for a guy like Ra's Al Ghul to do what he does. I secretly hope for the day a global-wide EMP would destroy all technology for a number of years. Give us humans the push we need to actually think for ourselves for a change. Instead of having to look for Siri or Google for answers. Magneto also has a justifiable reason to do what he does. I mean, how would you like it if you and others like you were horribly mistreated by the masses...all because of what you are? Lex is like that spoiled rich kid that bullies others in High School. They may act like the big dog on campus. But without their money; they're, basically the same as the rest of us. What's REALLY scary, however...is the fact that we've already got a real world version of Lex Luthor in Donald Trump. But DT seems 100 times more arrogant, egotistical, megalomaniacal and insecure with himself than Luthor was. Now...Amanda Waller...never before have I come to hate a character in media more than I do her. She's like Lex Luthor but with a little bit of Cersei Lannister's manipulative behavior and narrow worldview with a little bit of Joffrey's sadism sprinkled in. Like Luthor, she abuses her power and political standing in all the worse ways. Never caring about who she hurts or how many countries suffer in the name of her idea of "justice." Even the Nostalgia Critic pointed out how stupid her ideals are in his review of Suicide Squad. She and Luthor are two comic figures I want to see die and STAY dead

Oh yes, the COMIC BOOK CHARACTER Loki! It's not like there's a centuries old mythology involving him or anything...
@SasorisPuppet5 жыл бұрын
Considering this is about comic book characters, I'm not really sure what your complaint is in this case. Most people know Thor and Loki exist outside of Marvel's interpretations, and if they don't, I personally suggest they look into a basic bit of mythology.
