If you really think about it, the only developer who deserves any of the flack thrown their was Neil Druckman. From my understanding, he was the *CO* -director of the first Last of Us game, with most of what made that game great was because of the other guy! That, and again from my understanding, he was very abusive to work with. What with him bullying legendary game writer Amy Hennig and others to the point of quitting, only top executives getting a bonus that was promised to everyone, and him being a smarmy asshole to fans online. Now the death threats thrown to Lara Bailey was just uncalled for. She just plays the character. She had no input on the story. Hell, even people who absolutely hate TLoU2 were like, "Bro chill. That's too far." As for criticisms towards the game; Most of was in, pun not intended, the execution. I have no issue with Joel dying. It's how and why he died that erks people. Had it been Abby struggling to go through with it after meeting this boogyman she made him out to be, and in reality he's nothing she pictured, only for her to THEN kill him midway through the game where we take control of Ellie from there on, then maybe people wouldn't have been up in arms. And that's not considering any of the suspension of this belief elements, cries over it being woke, Anita Sarkeesian having an input in it's development, and Troy Baker saying WAY before the leaks came out that fans need to be open minded going into this game didn't help much either.

Ok so i wanna make something clear. We all knew Joel was going to die in the sequel. it's a trope when it comes to mentor mentee stories. It's the way it was HANDLED is what pissed off so many people and why this game was shamed. First off Neil panicked because so many people had guessed what his story was when the first trailer came out, heck Strange Rebel Gaming the Voice of Aerith guessed one of the potential story paths based on the tradition of posters in naughty dog games. So Neil did something which to me is considered false advertising and fraud in order to get people to buy the game. He had his team AND TROY BAKER falsify footage and record dialogue that doesn't exist in the game PURELY for the trailers. Neil Druckman ADMITTED TO THIS ON CAMERA during the Funny or Die podcast interview with him! Because of the whole "Games development is subject to change" loophole Neil could have been sued over this. He admitted he knew the only way to get people to buy the game is if to sell people on the idea that Joel was alive. Whats worse this isn't even Ellie's story, it's Abby's story overall as for a majority of the game you play as the woman who killed Joel. Many apologists for this game say "Well he pulled a Kojima!" No he did not... When Kojima was promoting Metal Gear Solid 2 the only things we saw were a single trailer and demo footage. Thats it, he didn't lie about what he was selling us, he just let the press spin their own stories about MGS2. It's considered one of the most masterful Bait and Switch'es in gaming and it's done without lying about the game or making false trailers or promises. Neil Druckman did no such thing.
@martinde-serres87242 жыл бұрын
You have to be that dumb AF to even say MGS 2 didn't piss of players with false advertisements cause they LITERALLY did it as well. We were showed LEGIT gameplay footage of Snake playable in the Big Shell sequence of the game, but then when the game came out, we got the bait-and-switch moment when Raiden showed up as the main character for the rest of the game. That whole moment pissed a lot of MGS fans so much cause they were promised Snake was back in another full fledged mission only to be told were only playing as him for the first 2-ish hours in a prologue sequence set before the Big Shell part of the game, which was 90% of the whole story. When Last of Us 2 trailers popped up, we saw gameplay footage of Ellie, so we thought we might be playing as her in one of the maybe? scripted sequences of the game. Then, when the game finally came out, THAT'S where we were told we'd be playing as her for about half the game only to YET AGAIN be forced to play as Abby for the second half for no fucking reason, not to mention LITERALLY revealing the whole game was Abby's story all along with Ellie being shamefully scapegoated like that. So Last of Us 2 pulled a Kojima TWICE in the same game and people were just as pissed as when Konami did it more than a decade prior with MGS 2. False advertisement or not, we were lied about Last of Us 2 multiple times sure, but that also happened LONG ago with MGS 2 as well, so your WHOLE comment is rendered moot here.

Dude a demo is literally a taste of what to expect in a game. Typically is the first mission or a random one in the middle of the game. Joel Miller... is a legend. Just as much as Nathan Drake.
@Arthus8502 жыл бұрын
A legend that’s clearly based around false memories and bias. From a completely objective standpoint Joel is nothing more than a survivor, no better than David or anyone else we fight against. He’s not a hero, he’s a killer in a world full of killers. The only reason why we like him is because we spent the entire game playing as him, but if we played as anyone else and came across him, we’d probably hate him, which someone clearly did.
@katafadasian2 жыл бұрын
@@Arthus850 That's exactly what makes him so good, though. He's not a hero. He's a dude, as flawed and selfish as all of us, who did what he had to in order to survive, and caved in to his own needs over the needs of the world when it mattered most. There's nothing more human than that. His relationship with Ellie in part 1 was masterfully written as well. It's not just that we played as him, it's that we saw both the good and bad in him and, despite not being a good person at all, he came out as an amazingly written, deep character.
@Arthus8502 жыл бұрын
@@katafadasian all completely true. But what’s also true is someone like him will inevitably make enemies, and as he is not some great hero, he won’t always survive, and with the amount of people he killed and lives he’s destroyed to save himself and Ellie, Karma would eventually catch up to him. Abby never spent time with him and thus never saw how good he can be. All she saw was the monster who selfishly killed her father and possibly doomed humanity by robbing it of the cure. I know it’s possible the Fireflies were going to exploit the cure (ignoring the fact that’s not why Joel did what he did) but Abby believed in it, so she had every reason to despise Joel. But she made the mistake of seeking revenge, and that led to her downfall, and very well would have led to Ellie’s downfall had she not ended the cycle when she did. That’s why I love both TLOU games. Because the present a very real and very well written take on the zombie apocalypse and the people who live in it. There are no heroes and no villains, only survivors, and who we see as good depends entirely on who we get to know.
@katafadasian2 жыл бұрын
@@Arthus850 I'll disagree on TLOU 2, which I consider to be badly written. I didn't mind Joel dying nor do I mind him having a dog's death, but Abby as a character feels forced and unnecessary. TLOU 2 is, as far as I'm concerned, is filled with stupid decision after stupid decision made mostly by Ellie (which was infuriating for all the wrong reasons), forgettable characters who don't matter at all, an annoying Mary Sue (Abby), and an unsatisfying ending (again, for the wrong reasons). All of that led me to dislike the game, and its simplistic "revenge bad" message didn't resonate with me. I don't mean to rain on your parade by saying all of this, because I completely respect that you like part 2. I'm just saying it to clarify that I don't care about TLOU 2 in any capacity, and my love for the franchise begins and ends with the first game.
@Arthus8502 жыл бұрын
@@katafadasian Hey, no worries. We’re hardly the first people to disagree about this. At least our disagreement is respectful. Just last week I disagreed with someone about this game and they got all pissed and hit me with all of these numbers and so called facts that he clearly made up in order to tell me I’m factually wrong for believing what I believe and it somehow devolved into him saying the game is actually a financial failure “just like Disney and maval” (he seriously called Marvel maval) and hit me with so many made up numbers saying the MCU’s box office successes are lies and that they’re actually all flops. I knew any kind of civil discussion was impossible at that point, which is why I find our conversation refreshing.

Throw in the writing and execution of his death not to mention how it went down was beyond trash on top of that...rather than pushing some moving death they made it just outright spiteful...especially when you consider how he had just saved Abby and co (and vice versa) moments before they beat him to death. Throw in they didn't even question if they were killing the 'right' Joel (may not be a common name but probably not too rare either) as the only thing said in said scene was his name at most. Then throw in Neil Cuckman's reaction and it's obvious it was written this way not out of trying to make a good story but to either get rid of the character cause Cuckman either hated his type of character or he wanted to push the woke strong female lead BS and couldn't have a stronger, more recognizable character in the game to detract from that. Then throw in the other story writing issue with the other characters and the game's story is nowhere near amazing...hell would probably be lambasted as bottom tier trash by most game news outlets if it was Sony/Cuckman making it and they pushed the game pushed the BS woke agenda in turn for actual good storytelling. I could think of 1000 different ways to kill Joel in actual well writing AND satisfying way, and some even involve saving Abby of all characters (hell could've had him get killed by the zombies/clickers/whatever they're called (haven't played the series, most of what I saw is via KZbin as I refuse to play the game's by Cuckman after his pathetic tantrum) at the start of the game when they meet for a bit of ironic fateful meeting and parting moment between the two characters where one's hunting the other and doesn't even realize it until much later. Other way, probably more preferable to players, would have him die closer to the climax of the game or the halfway point probably in some sort of effort to save Ellie/both girls...are such storylines used a lot? Yes but that's because they work and are decent tropes plain and simple...far better than the spiteful death that Cuckman gave us)).

I’m embarrassed to say.. I really loved the mechanics of anthem .. it felt cool to fly around .. there was just no story
@KeithElliott-zd8cx2 жыл бұрын
Honestly if anthem was less 'let's rip off of games like destiny without studying WHY that worked' in general it would've been better - i was hoping something more diablo 3 but builds are fucking iron man suits on an alien world, but it couldn't do live service or even looter right. Hell, warframe basically is that idea just without the flying in a big open map type core gameplay experience and it's great.

I absolutely agree with u.. anthem is my guilty pleasure for 9.99.. which is what it’s worth .. no way 59 bucks
@KeithElliott-zd8cx2 жыл бұрын
@@chrisbridston3438 tbh i kinda want to get into it, but i don't really like how it seems it really wants multiplayer - i can do most of warframe solo and it's system seems so fucking great to me (Not that it doesn't have issues too) Anthem just doesn't seem up my alley as much - but then, neither is destiny's style as far as i can tell.

Suggestion. Opposite of this. Times where you were wrong to worry. Doom 2016 springs to mind. No single player shown before launch. Big push for the multilayer with the demo which was very lack luster. No reviews before release. Outcome. One of the best fps games ever.

No reviews before launch is still better attitude than adding microtransaction after reviews are done - that is straight up scam.

Line for being unhappy with anything in gaming: You can be upset. You can insult their decisions. You can decide not to buy the game. You CANNOT threaten anyone involved. My biggest thing is don't buy a game if you don't like what's happening with it.

Best things in games WORTH THE GRIND to find them...after realizing you missed them the first play through!!! Aeriths final LB in FF7 ("finding the mythril [by accident]" and choosing the right box... Charge beam specials in "Super Metroid" (equip a super bomb and crouch while charging your blaster) 99⭐️ on your save in "Super Mario" (flying with the cape through most of the level on the bridge stage until you go under it to get a path to the lake star) Etc. Etc. Etc.

True. Development Hell is usually the mark of a bad game. The guy from Nintendo once said that a rushed game is forever bad and a delayed game is eventually good. I call BS!

Ok, but Last Of Us part 2 remains one of the best (stories?) openings in video games. Whether you loved it or hated it, it evoked POWERFUL feelings and absolutely smashed it out of the park (sorry Joel)

I absolutely loved Joel's surrogate father dynamic with Ellie in The last of us. When I realised I wouldn't be playing him I lost so much interest that I no longer wanted to play it. Only Joel and Kratos really represent all us grumpy old dads!

Idea: 7.6 Times games dragged us out of the illusion by stating numbers that were just wrong... Diablo 3 mentioning having only a thousand or so guys during Act 4 but then having a full on war in the background and dozens of people dying around you every screen, not to mention the bodies, all for the small section of the massive fortress and battlefield that you do see. Just don't give numbers if they are going to be so very wrong, it did not give a sense of danger.
