When he and Rinne left NHL this year. It ended one fine chapter in Finnish NHL history 1982-1984 generation had so many good players like Mikko Koivu, Tuomo Ruutu, Joni Pitkänen, Antti Niemi, Jussi Jokinen, Kari Lehtonen and Sean Bergenheim. Now the Olympic Roster will be full of players born in 90s.

Yup, there is only four finnish players born in the 80's next season. Komarov, Rask, Koskinen and Raanta, and three of those were late bloomers. All respect for the second "golden age" of finnish players, third is maybe 1996-2001, that we will see.

@@mapa6353 Yep indeed, but I think that very first generation which really draw Finns into the map of Hockey was players born in 1972-1975 consisting many legendary players like Saku Koivu, Ville Peltonen, Jere Lehtinen, Janne Niinimaa, Jere Karalahti, Kimmo Timonen, Fredrik Norrena, Jussi Markkanen, Juha Ylonen and Petteri Nummelin. Fountain head is Jari Kurri (1960) though. :)

Filppula belongs firmly to the category of good players. He was never great, but never bad either. When he aged, he changed his style of play to accomodate his new role as a veteran presence.

I also enjoyed his time on the Flyers. He received WAY too much undeserved criticism in his years in Philly. He was getting older, played on an awful team and never got any real opportunities to play outside of the 4th line and he still adapted his game to new his role fairly well.

I well remember watching him score his first goal for the wings. I feel old.

Before watching: nothing surprising really, players tend to outlive their prime but it says lot that wunderkin grande extortionist...or best gm at the moment stevie y brought valtteri back to red wings to teach up and coming team what it is and what it takes to succeed. A small personal story. Valtteri's and Ilari's (his older brother, also played pro) family live in Moscow, USSR at some point in the 1980's. My family lived there too for a time as my parents were in the trade business. As there were very few foreigners, and even fewer Finns, our families were friends for a time and I used to play(not hockey) with the brothers as a kid. Valtteri could not have been many years old. I don't know exactly what his parents did there, but I don't think they stayed longer than a year or two.

He sure was dope in Tampa and during his first stint in Detroit! Was a big part of both dynasties.The first year or two dynasty w tampa in 2015-2017 and the wings from 2005-2013. Ofc his second stint was more covid and mediocre teams than him individually. I kinda wish the Lightning had brought him back from 2019 to 2021 instead of the Wings so Filppula could've been apart of the back to back cups Tampa won in 2020 and 2021 and 3 total counting 2008 with detroit but whatever.
