I found these after moving back home. Everybody says they never planted them😂 They never even knew they were here. I found 6. 3months later and there's 13/14. We had a drought here a few years back and most homes switched to aloes of some sort in the gardens. We had water restrictions and we couldn't water gardens. So now I want to plant these all over our property. They require no special care. Aloes are everywhere. I found several aloe vera bushes, yes bushes, on the side of the street .... Btw I live in a city suburb. Regards fromCape Town South Africa.

Thanks, I have those that were given to me and i planted in pots until I transplant to the yard. I'm in SF Bay Area and do you know why mines are brown colored?

Hmmm. Are they in full sun? Mine get some morning shade and have not turned brown, except for a little bit on the tips.

can you eat the aloe gel

I have not, but it appears that it's not a toxic aloe variety. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aloe_maculata

I believe so. It was reported in the comments below. Many varieties of aloe and used by humans. The ones that smell ratty are known to be toxic.

It sounds like it's similar to it's relative, Aloe Vera. I'll give it a try, thanks for the advice.
