Arsenio was so necessary for R&B and hip hop artists back in the 1990s. That was one of the only places we could see them perform live.
@whatsforafters78437 жыл бұрын
So very true! Lucky that so many performers, especially that that point in time, appeared on his show. As you stated, it was practically the only place they were welcome, on national television, at the time.
@dwayneturner93954 жыл бұрын
From Big Daddy Kane to Leaders of the New school to a pre superstar Mariah, and Bobby Brown before 'Don't be Cruel' blew up. Too many to name. But you wasn't seeing ANY hip hop on Leno/Carson. But, Letterman had A Tribe Called Quest and Fugees and JayZ etc, too. So big ups to Letterman too. But , yeah Arsenio gave so many their first and some ONLY, major TV appearances.

Neneh Cherry is an amazing artist. How many biracial Swedes do you know that can switch from fast rapping and singing in a NY accent to a British one (each in their respective slang) at the drop of a dime to make a catchy and enduring song? Great stage presence too.

I never realised till now at 43 how much I actually learned from Neneh's songs back in the day, I was only 10 and new I wanted to be a fierce independent woman when I grew up! Thanks Neneh for being a huge part of my life even though my Mum would go mad at some of the lyrics since I was so young!😂 It was my auntie Gill that gave me a copy of her album on cassette!! And that was it, I was hooked , a wee Scottish girl living in London from age 9 till 10/11!! Then we came back home to Scotland but it was a huge part of my life in London that I will never forget, lots of learning curves and mixing with all different cultures, absolutely completely different from my hometown in West Scotland and I believe it was those years that shaped a huge part of me..... When I came back, everyone said , 'why u speakin different!!?? ' this is when I realised I had a half cockney/Scottish accent haha I listened to different music , and knew bands that some of my friends hadn't heard of. Loved hip hop and learned the shuffle so it was almost like being a few yrs Infront down there .... No one could understand unless they did the same as me at that age. And my name being Nina, even now my name is kind of unusual but slowly hearing some other parents now naming their baby girl 'Nina'. Anyway my point is.... Everyone and I mean 98% of people I met all over the world when I said, Hi I'm Nina ! They would say, Aw! Like Nina Cherry!!?? And I would say, well kind of but she is actually called Neneh !! And I am Ni - Na! So funny so in highschool in Scotland I was often called 'Cherry' or 'Nina Cherry'! Sorry am wafflin now but just wanted to share this and if you ever read this Neneh just want to say Thank you. Even back then you stick out in my mind for representing different cultures and skin colour and all the different languages I heard in your lyrics...well over 30 yes ago, I remember this and my love for foreign languages and different cultures began ..... I started to teach myself Spanish and after moving to Canaries at 18 ... I was fluent by the time I reached 30!! (Only dated Spanish speaking guys!! ) .... And ended up teaching Zumba and Zumba Kids with Spanish.... NENEH YOU AND YOUR MUSIC, LYRICS AND STYLE HAD A HUGE IMPACT ON MY CHILDHOOD AND HOW I BECAME AN ADULT AND ALTHOUGH I ALWAYS KNEW THIS, IT WASNT UNTIL I HAD A listen again to reminisce; I was blown away at the realisation of how much I had taken from your music and magic throughout my life !! It was definitely one of those Penny drop moments and amazing feeling so thank you!! Safe ❤

Have you ever heard of something called grammar? Independant woman hahah, that's cute. Your inspiration was some bi-racial woman who came from a community literally stereotyped as being rampant with single mothers, trying to emulate male rappers. Yes....inspirational indeed.

The song was written and composed for Cherry's boyfriend at the time, Esteban Caudillo. Cherry gave him the nickname "Che" because he frequently quoted Che Guevara and talked constantly about revolutionary topics. Thus, Cherry's original lyrics were: "Who's looking good today? Che's looking good in every way." After their breakup, she removed this reference to him.The reference to "his crocodile feet" was Cherry's teasing reference to Che's ever present Lacoste tennis shoes, which he even wore with business suits and tuxedoes.The following lyrics were from a Valentine's Day poem Che wrote for Cherry "Wind on my face, sound in my ears Water from my eyes, and you on my mind As I sink, diving down deep deeper into your soul."The two eventually split due to Cherry's belief that Che was too materialistic and loved money more than her, which was the inspiration for the lyrics: "No moneyman can win my love It's sweetness that I'm thinking of.

Neneh got 13 mins of time on the Arsenio show, with 2 songs and an interview. Contrast that with many of today's musical acts who get just 4 mins. for a song and, sometimes, a handshake from the host; few of those ever get that extra bit of "couch time".

I watched his show religiously in the 90s growing up and it was phenomenal. I don't know why he stopped calm I don't know if he had health issues or what but he was number 2 the whole time to Jay Leno. He left then he came back and then he left again. When he made his comeback many many many years later he was a little bit different. But he was the best talk show out there in the 90s in my opinion.

Loved this interview with Neneh Cherry. Foward thinking with a strong personality. I remember hearing that Madonna felt threatened by her emerging stardom here in the states and sabotaged her career. This was back in the late 80's early 90's and allegedly Madonna encouraged club dj's to not play Neneh's music.

@Etubnuel8 жыл бұрын
besides her dad is american, Don Cherry. so american accent would be more close to her I think.but then Neneh is a swede, and i think that in swedish schools in the 80's they were taught to talk english with brittish accent, so maybe that's why she picked up the brittish accent. Or maybe she lived there and just sort of picked it up.
@Terelon8 жыл бұрын
I like her and I know she's part American but I've seen interviews in this time period where she speaks with a British accent so why speak with an American one here, I see it like me being American and going to Britain speaking like them when I know that's not my native accent, I get the adaption part but it's seems weird, maybe I reading too much into it.
@Etubnuel8 жыл бұрын
terelon well, you are an american so you've got a native accent, but Neneh is swedish so native accent don't really apply to her I think... or I don't know, think I agree with previous comments about how accent changes from surroundings for people with good musical hearing.
