Queen of the Masquerade by Crimson Glory. A Little Fire by Cirith Ungol. Heaven and Hell by (Dio Era) Black Sabbath. Heaven and hell (Sabbath Cover), Mirror of Sorrow, and Destiny Falls to Ruin by Solitude Aeturnus. N.I.B., Paranoid, and War Pigs by (Ozzy Era) Black Sabbath. Secret Mountain, Tidecaller, Blackened Sun, and Angel's Blood by Bell. Free Country by Witchfinder General. Visions and The Battle by Sorcerer. The River Dragon Has Come, Believe in Nothing, Inside Four Walls, Sell My Heart For Stones, and Emptiness Unobstructed by Nevermore. Sol Invictus by Atlantean Kodex. Bathory's Hammerheart is a Viking Metal album, afaik it is the FIRST Viking Metal album. I personally prefer Bathory's Black Metal to their Viking metal, but I don't think there is any ambiguity to the claim that Quorthon is the patriarch of the Viking Metal genre, compared to the endless shitstorm about who started Black Metal between Bathory and Venom.
@neuroisis85 Жыл бұрын
@@lordkardok5845 Yeah but Viking Metal is just Epic Metal with left over bits of Black Metal and Folk. I wouldn't call Hammerheart "Doom" but the Doom is in there because it's present in all forms of Epic Metal.

I 100% agree, the tone of the music itself is more indicative of the genre than the lyrical content. When you hear droning guitars, or a trap beat, that's telling you what to be feeling, and the lyrics can adjust the mood left or right a bit, giving you a smile or a frown while you shoe-gaze or dance.

Holy shit. I have been getting back into playing guitar recently, and I've been trying to pin down what brings my tastes together, what could constitute "My sound". I think this video just succintly put everything I like about music and want to sound like, into a singular thing. Yes, I love Candlemass. Yes, Heaven and Hell is my favorite Sabbath album, alongside the other standalone album The Devil You Know. This was, completely unironically, the most enlightening video I've watched on KZbin in AGES. I legitimately feel like my eyes have been opened. Grant us eyes. I love themes like Dark Souls and Bloodborne, and I had to keep pausing the video to go save the other bands you mentioned to my Spotify. Bell sounds absolutely fucking AMAZING. This is exactly what I want to sound like, somewhere between Dream Theater and Mastodon, with a flavor of Doom.

I first heard Candlemass during a family car ride when i was like 9, been a fan since. If you like the operatic style vocals you should DEFINITELY check out Mirror of Deception, their song Ghost is absolutely iconic and even though instrumentally its not as flashy as most epic doom stuff, the vocals are phenomenal and very sorrowful.

It can be said that Epic Doom objectively borrows only 3 elements from Power Metal, the operatic vocal technique, the lyrical fantasy based theme, but darker (though this depends, as not all bands do this) & maybe the use of some classical influences, but you must consider the fact that the originators of the concept, 'Candlemass', started out and existed in the 80's, the time in which most Metal bands used some of those elements (excluding Death Metal, obviously) it's not a Power Metal subgenre or fusion, because beyond those 3 elements (and the evident contrasting tone/atmosphere) the compositional style/techniques are clearly different, bands that do borrow from PM are 'Sorcerer' and 'Memory Garden' for example, it also shares the 'not very serious' and sometimes 'cheesy' attitude from the era, thing that the darker/original sounding Epic Doom bands like 'later Solitude Aeturnus', 'Isole' & 'Night Gaunt' tend to delete/modify and make their own sound, it's a Doom Metal subgenre, and btw, early Black Sabbath is called 'Proto-Doom' for a reason, Iommi laid some basic elements, but their sound is closer to Stoner/Doom than to Trad Doom, as that sound was fully developed in the 80's by bands like Saint Vitus & Trouble, the Ozzy Era's only almost full-on Doom Metal song is 'Black Sabbath'.

Doom is one of my favorite genres of metal - particularly the slower and more depressive styles. Big fan of While Heaven Wept and Atlantean Kodex and I'm very happy to see both get mentioned. One question I have for you in particular cause I'm kind of mixed on it myself - Warning's Watching from a Distance; would you consider it Epic Doom? It does fit into the genre with the operatic-esque vocals and the more slowed down rhythms and melodies, but at the same time it feels completely different than the likes of Candlemass or Solitude Aeternus.
@whatsinameme5258 Жыл бұрын
Yes, I would call it Epic Doom. I don't know quite how to explain it, but newer Epic Doom has a different vibe than the 80s and 90s stuff. Its less whimsical aand more straight up depressing it seems. Almost seems closer to Funeral Doom. There is probably some crossover between these styles. I will be covering Funeral Doom soon in this series.
@Astro2XA Жыл бұрын
@@whatsinameme5258 I 100% agree. Epic Doom most definitely has a different feel and vibe nowadays. Not that it's a bad thing, it's just... different. I can't wait for your episode on Funeral Doom. Wouldn't Merciful fate be in the same category as candlemass. How is Melissa or Abigail not even mentioned on a comparison offshoot. How can you talk about operatic vocals affecting the meaning and miss Fate/King. Satan's Fall? And Melissa being sacrificed to fulfill her purpose to live on. "She's with me every day."
@whatsinameme5258 Жыл бұрын
I like Mercyful Fate but I wouldn't class them as Epic Doom. They are more NWOBHM sound meets Occult Rock. Think Judas Priest and Blue Oyster Cult mixed together. Totally different vibe than Epic Doom Metal. Some would also argue Mercyful Fate is some sort of Proto-Black Metal as well, though this is mostly due the satanic themes, which are notably absent in Epic Doom. Though I see where you are coming from. I hear some Candlemass-ish moments, here and there.

I genuinely don't think you can call Black Sabbath doom metal. Through hindsight it's clear that Black Sabbath has a doom metal sound, but I don't think I would label the original heavy metal band with a subgenre... I feel like doing that defeats the purpose of them being the "first". Additionally, I feel like it was never Black Sabbaths intent to follow any particular path and I think labelling it purely doom also defeats that purpose. Like the sound of Black Sabbath and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath is completely different and I would say there is no clear distinction... Candlemass seems more likely to be the first doom metal band than Sabbath.
