I had a deaf customer who was a regular back when I worked at ALDI. She would use her phone if she ever needed help but it was few and far between (I imagine because she didn’t want to be a “bother”)and it just didn’t sit right with me. I spent months learning extensive sign language both from videos, classes, and people I met through those resources so that I was as conversational in my ASL as I could be. The way her face lit up the day she walked in and I signed a simple “hello” will stay with me forever, it only got better when I started asking about her day and stopped several times to make small talk about groceries and the weather. After that we conversed every time she came in. By far the most useful skill I’ve learned as an adult. Communication should never have such easy to break barriers left untouched.

Sadly I think it's a generational thing. Just like older people are often clueless about modern technology (which she also seemed to be, LOL), some are also ignorant and less sensitive about special needs. She might've grown up - or worse, been raised - with the perception that deaf people are somehow mentally challenged. I'm not defending or making excuses for her behavior, but trust me, she's not the only senior out there who would have that reaction. My late father was born left-handed and grew up in the 1940s and, believe it or not, his teachers in school tried to force him to write right-handed ! Why? Because left was considered "evil". INSANE by today's standards, but true. 😫 It gave him ambidextrous ability to a degree, but when he went back to writing fully lefty, his penmanship was degraded. The world was a much more ignorant place only a couple generations ago...

I don't know. I'm a bit ambivalent. Lovely to see her engagement and she does all the right things. Apart from... As a professor of communication skills, she's not... she should take some classes in that. Had she not brought it up as an argument against the "server" (actor/"server") I couldn't have cared less. Had she mentioned that was her job, after the reveal, I would have thought she was a great professor. But as she brought it up the way she did, that's not a good way to communicate with people. I don't think anyone has to tell her why, considering that she's a professor in communication.

I had to take an order of a deaf person before. He let me know he was deaf. He showed me his order on his phone. When it came to asking him what he wanted to drink. I asked by grabbing a cup and pointing to the different drinks and he picked one. It was as simple as that and he got the food out. It’s not that hard to take the order of someone who is deaf even if you don’t understand sign language .

My mom is deaf-blind (not 100%, but this is the easiest way to explain it) and because I'm so accustomed to how she speaks and communicated without FSL, I do a lot of things deaf people do. Like I lipread, I feel the need to have face-to-face contact with the person speaking and I try to be clear when needed. It also helps me concentrate. I do understand why you should look at the person getting interpreted, but we shouldn't immediatly say someone doing something in an un-preferred way is doing something very very harmfull. They might have their own actual reason as to why they look at the interpreted. But I do believe most people are unknowing and just don't even pay attention to it.

So true. Many years ago a lady in a wheelchair came to my till and I without even realising started talking to her through her friend who was helping her. Her friend said to not do that. That lesson was enough for me to realise how wrong it was.
@LoganDC1003 жыл бұрын
@@jok2042 That's an important point, and thank you for making it. My Mom contracted polio when she was 2 (back in 1940). She lost the use of her right leg, and has walked with a brace for as long as I've been alive. (When people call her "disabled," I tell them that her professional success was enough to put me through Harvard, so f*** off.) My Mom has a mobility impairment. This does not mean that I automatically know how to interact with someone who is, for example, Deaf or blind. (And I'm one of the -- dozens of -- people who wrote the Americans With Disabilities Act.) I learned a lot getting that done -- but, wow, did I make mistakes along the way or what? I did learn how to do that -- but it was my Mom being who she is that made me realize I needed to figure that out.

You shouldn't mind your own business when someone else is being discriminated against. How are deaf people supposed to be independent and live their lives if we treat them like shit for just existing, even though we can read an order as well as we can hear one

I love that you still hired a deaf actor when you usually rely on earpieces. Shows a lot of character when it would have been an easy out to hire someone who isn’t deaf. Love that

they usually tend to hire actors that fit the character (e.g. they hire lesbian actors for a lesbian scenario, and they’ve hired a blind person for a scenario involving a blind man). it’s lovely, and it’s amazing that they do it :)

XO prepared for what? the fuk? To learn to speak? Impossible. Not every deaf person has a translator too. And if this was real, what if it was his first time in that restaurant, how would he be prepared, he has to look at the menu first like every new customer has to. I know there are some ways which he can be prepared, but if he’s not, it’s the other persons job to help him.... thats what your job is for... there’s no need to be a bitch and correct his mistakes the rude way. Not everyone just has a pen and paper out of nowhere... don’t expect everyone to be perfect.

my childhood best friend is deaf. it makes my heart melt knowing that there’s kind and caring people who stand up for deaf people. my friend told me several stories about the times she was discriminated. i always cried and wished i was there to defend her. The worst thing is when parents don’t educate their kids to be patient and kind to those who have disabilities. i wish everyone could be as caring as the people in this video.
