I am a firefighter in southern Indiana wheat harvest has just about passed here. My dept covers 100 square miles in rural Indiana. We have a brush rig and tactics just for combines. Around here very few houses are as expensive as these machines. Proud to say many of these calls in our area can have a few hours labor put in the the machine and drove out of the field or put back into service.

I just gotta shake my head in amazement at the new farm machinery. I recall the "good old days" out on our farm w my dad and uncle, with a Super 92 Massey Ferguson combine picking up 15 foot windrows. Good grief, they cut more in just this video than they could do all day long! Of course, the Super 92 Massey was a vast improvement over the old International Harvester 127 combine they had previously. I asked dad why they called it a 127 and he said cause that's how many places one had to grease before getting it going every morning.

Be almost a month here in central Indiana before we start our wheat Harvest!!!! Great Video guys !!!

I remember as a lad listening to the uncles talk about maybe getting 28 or 30 bushels an acre. Making 35 was almost unheard of, but that was more than 50 years ago.

What was the avg yield for the farms wheat crop this year?
@Rbnqss8 жыл бұрын
Already wheat harvest? In here Finöand it is still green and very undone, exscpecially now that we have rather cold weather,so its septemper when harvest starts here. You guys are getting two harvests per season?
@tator058 жыл бұрын
In parts of Kentucky and Texas yes, The harvest then moves north in July and August through the rest of the bread bowl states and through Montana, Canada and the Palouse region in Idaho, Washington and Oregon
@tator058 жыл бұрын
To answer your other question is yes some do get a second crop when they plant soybeans right behind the grain
@bigtractorpower8 жыл бұрын
Wheat is harvested here in Kentucky in early June and soybeans are planted directly behind the combines for a second crop. Western Kentucky where we film is where the southern United States meets the mid-west. The large mid-west sized fields combined with a southern climate allow for very productive farming practices.

what do you guys call productive? how many kilo's of grain do you get from 1 acre (an acre is in europe 100m by 100m)
@53Aries8 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure how it converts to kilo's, but here in North Dakota we get an average of about 90 bushels per acre. Our acre is approximately 4,047 m2

Running that much straw thru the machine, are you having an issue with grain riding over on the straw. What is your seed loss?
@wildturkey58388 жыл бұрын
The machines are designed to shake and agitate the straw to separate the grain. There are some good animations that show how it works. When I was harvesting wheat we worked hard to hold losses to under a half-bushel/acre. We had to check three kinds of grain loss by counting grains per sq ft on the ground: "wind thrash" ahead of the combine, "reel thrash" just behind the platform, and "grain tossed" by checking behind the machine. Some losses were unavoidable, given the nature of wheat, but we worked hard to limit losses because they both cut our yield/profits and the seed would germinate and cause problems with the next crop in the area, meaning we'd have to spray or plow extra to kill the "volunteer" plants.

In Texas we are small farm, we produce 1/4 million bushels of grain each year. We have a JD 9770STS. My neighbor puts about 3/4 million through each S670. My son does most of the work except we hire two truck drivers and extra truck for corn and sorghum harvest. How many bushels do you put through each machine in a year?
@easyriderpappy45378 жыл бұрын
Had Problems with the S670 Trasher on the Combine, Broke Loose 2 times.. Got Rid of them and went to S690's and have not had any problems. Built Heavy and More Horse Power with Larger intake.

I am watching these huge combines and what they ingest at the front which is huge amount. Does anyone check what is coming out the back end to see how much the machine missed and is put back out the rear end with the straw? I never hear any farmer telling this in their videos . Yes these big machines are great but how efficient are they? Anyone want to comment to a none farmer thanks.
@failuretounderstand18 жыл бұрын
Farmers don't want to leave behind any grain at all if they can help it. Today's combines have grain loss sensors located all over the machine to help the operator adjust it so it gets the cleanest sample without leaving anything behind.
@canvids18 жыл бұрын
thanks for your great reply and the heads up on the info.
@bigtractorpower8 жыл бұрын
Combines do have some loss. They are computerized and the operator knows exactly how the machine is performing at at all times. We film all brands of combines through out the year and the machine we see with the least loss is the GLEANER Super Series.
@wildturkey58388 жыл бұрын
When I was driving John Deere 95's in the '60's we would stop occasionally and count the number of grains of wheat in a square foot in front of the combine, then behind the header and finally behind the combine. That gave us a way to compare the "wind thrash loss", "reel thrash" and "machine loss" so we could tell how we were doing in adjusting the reel and ground speed, etc. Nice to have sensors to tell you all that now.
