I believe the little plastic inserts between the rear bumper and the arch are to prevent pedestrians getting snagged on the bumper. A similar problem occurred on the early Mk1 door handles, they were like a hook and so a small boss was added to close the gap up between the handle and the door. The bumper inserts were fitted to the Japanese market minis for many years before they were used over here.

Don't you hate drilling holes into that beautiful Mini! Why rivets to hold the arches on? Wouldn't they be harder to get off ? Also what were you spraying around the wheel well before mounting the arches?
@classicminiworkshop
@classicminiworkshop 4 жыл бұрын
Just to keep them original looking as they used rivets from new. I was spraying wax to help with rust protection
@classicminidetails8887
@classicminidetails8887 4 жыл бұрын
Using screws to fix arches on is OK if they are staying on for good. If you remove them every time you do the hole becomes bigger and bigger where as rivets don't affect the hole. Dimensions also screws can come loose not often rivets do mate

@@classicminidetails8887 Thanks for that Alex and Keith. To remove the rivets I suppose you just drill them out.

Keith, I used rivnuts (4mm aluminium with 4mm stainless screws) to attach the headlamp bowls to the body rather than pop rivets. Where did you get the rubber trim from for the arches? I am also planning to use rivnuts to hold the "special" arches onto the body so having a rubber trim would ensure these are not visible.
@classicminiworkshop
@classicminiworkshop 4 жыл бұрын
Good idea on the rivnuts. I had not thought about that of the arches. The rubber trim came off the old W&P arches that I removed

Looking sweet Keith, I have the same arches on the pickup but they didn't come with any rubber seals can you buy them separately?

Hi Keith, Sprout is looking great! One question - I noticed that after you drilled the holes, you didn't appear to put any paint or protection in the hole? You sprayed the wax coating on the panel, but just wondered about you experience on whether it is worth putting additional protection in the hole?

I also dipped the rivets in grease so that when the rivet crushes it traps grease between the rivet and hole. I've done this before and provided the grease doesn't get washed away no water can come in contact with the metal.

Hi. Great videos! Do you know what the plastic inserts are called between bumper and arch? Or indeed anywhere that supplies them? It would be a great help as I am look for some for my 1998 Cooper :)

Sprout is certainly coming along now, loving your way of thinking with the spray wax to help resist future rust. Those plastic filler blocks between rear bu per and the arches is it because of some pedestrian safety regulation?
@chrispenn715
@chrispenn715 4 жыл бұрын
Yes I think it was some update on safety regs. Eg with kit cars the SVA test uses a radiused tool (like half a ball) to make sure there are no sharp edges on the body. I suspect those covers are part of conformance.

Very nice job, good to see you putting the rubber trim on the arches. Hate seeing them fitted without. Did you use the heat gun to get the ends to fit closer to the body? Mine stick out.
