Ji'e'Toh is honor and obligation. One way this manifests in the taking of Gai'shain, "those sworn to peace in battle". Aiel earn honor and prestige for deeds in battle--or accumulate shame by misdeeds--but killing an opponent earns the least honor; "any child can kill". What earns the most honor is touching the opponent while they are holding a weapon, but without harming them, much like the practice of counting coup performed by the Native Americans. An Aiel so shamed is considered to have toh -- obligation -- to the person who touched them, and will march straight to that person and demand to be made gai'shain, at which point they don white robes, become that person's peaceful servant in all but name for a year and a day, and swear not to touch a weapon, or even defend themselves, during that time. Becoming gai'shain is a way to answer for toh; it is totally voluntary and can be used to atone for non-battle-related shaming as well. Gai'shain are not slaves, and any wetlander who suggests it is soon straightened out. Conversely, Aiel are horrified and confused by the concept of "servants", people who work throughout their life in the service of others. Wise Ones, children, pregnant women, women with a child under the age of ten, and blacksmiths cannot be taken gai'shain. No Aiel would dare harm Perrin if they learned his profession, because a quirk of their society is that they consider harming a Blacksmith to be morally equivalent to attacking an innocent baby. To them it makes perfect sense for a blacksmith to be a pacifist, although there is no shame in a smith fighting as there is in others fighting against a smith. Not all of the Aiel Wise Ones are channelers, but every channeler born among the Aiel is trained to become a Wise One. They have forgotten many of the weaves that the White Tower's Aes Sedai remember, but also remember many weaves that the Aes Sedai forgot. (Some even know how to Travel, opening portals to instantly take them any distance. They lack the strength to open a working portal, but can teach others how to do so.) Some Wise Ones are quite skilled in manipulating the World of Dreams, including some with no ability to channel in the real world. The Aes Sedai have hierarchy and judge each other by their relative strengths in the power, but Wise Ones do not. Wise Ones are officially all equals, but they tend to defer to those of their peers with the more forceful personalities regardless of relative magical power.

@@peterg9729 Saying they are Tinker's aren't really accurate. There were the original Aiel who followed the Way of the Leaf. First the group that would later become the Tinkers left, they recruited other people so did not keep the red-hair look but kept the Way of the Leaf. While most of the Aiel with the exception of a single clan that later died out became desert warrior people while keeping the red hair as they were isolated from other people.

I'm glad you brought up the 'lesbian witch" trope. I read these books so many times. And i never thought these women were into each other like this. And i am a WLW. 'pillow friends' are close friends who tell each other secrets. Jordan had no gay characters, that's why Sanderson added a couple 🤦🏾♀I think making them sexual lessens their relationship. A lot of people are closer to their friends than their spouses. They do use the word stilling several times so far this season. Did they explain what it meant for non-book readers? While Morraine is agonizing over those letters she brings it up.
@roadtotarvalon Жыл бұрын
"Pillow friends are not just good friends. Oh, they are that, too, but they also get hot and sweaty together and muss up the sheets something fierce. By the way, pillow friends is a term used in the White Tower. The same relationship between men or women elsewhere would be called something else, depending on the country." Moraine never would have used the word "stilling" in book lore because she merely had a tied off shield and would have been able to sense the source. These showrunners are shallow children who hate Robert Jordan and could not hold their attention long enough to actually read the source material.

Siuan and Moraine didn’t “just” fool around. They had a relationship and they lived together in the White Tower in New Spring. They married men at the end of the series so they would be considered bisexual.

Rand is the Jake Skywalker sea cow blue milk throw away the light saber loser non main character in Rafe Leeroooy Jenkins hate letter to Robert Jordan. This show is 90 percent changes 10 percent using the right names and sometimes a location. Rand never sleeps with Lanfear. Moraine is not shielded and is not "gay" she and Thom have a relationship at the end of the books. You read the books right? Or did you do like a Rafe level reading of the books when you say you read the books but you really hate them? There is no mystery box it can be a girl but at least now with Verin and Siuan using the male pronounces we know the showrunners cannot even stay true to their tv cannon. The Amyrlin Seat was not blind, and that scene should have been one in winter. Moraine never has a fourth oath to Siuan. Moraine never teams up with Lanfear and Lanfear would have dream walked or traveled with inverted weaves instead of used the ways. Rand is never shielded and never trained by Logain. And he actually gets sword training by Lan but not in this hate you letter by Rafe. Mat is not a loser, he has past lives where he a general not a murderer. The list goes too long into the 10s of thousands at this point. This is not Robert Jordans Wheel of Time. It is written by shallow people who envy their betters and by that envy hate the actual source material. Who are the fans of this hate letter? 1984 compulusion NPCs.
