Thank you so much for sharing these techniques! I was a power wheelchair user for nine years and in May became a manual wheelchair user with power assist. I found pressure release to be very easy in my previous wheelchair, but not my current one. I primarily lay down to do pressure release now. I need to watch your videos again. It has been a while because of my health complications. Have a Happy New Year and take care!

Hey Mason, I stumbled upon your videos a few days ago. I'm currently a student in Occupational Therapy school and I'm doing research on spinal cord injuries and I was wondering if you could give me some insight on what type of manual wheelchair you have? I loved learning so much more about SCI's from you and your videos and everything that you have to adapt to overcome so many obstacles as a quadriplegic. I think this is a great resource for many people! :)

Looking good, Mason! I've done as you've instructed since 1980 and have had but one 'sore' on my heel after breaking my leg. That was due to swelling. Your/ our legs, crossing them back and forth, will lead to the necessity for adductor pads on your power chairs; a good thing. If sci's (quads) don't cross their legs, the legs tend to stick together and atrophy more noticeably. Many, in that case, must place a cushion between their legs. That's my observation and experience, not something anyone has shared with me. Excellent video and thank you for sharing all you do to stay fit. ...you live close to B-Cow and the park has to keep the deer population in check. Have you hunted there?

I do dips for pressure release because I'm on hip restrictions (because I'm missing the right hip joint and a bone infection kind of obliterated my hip) and am not supposed to bend. Dips are basically wheelchair pushups for those who don't know.

Pressure relief is important Mason and I had some pressure sores on my Butt and it takes a long time to heal and I needed to lay and stay off my Butt or they will never heal. So this Powerchair I have now has tilt and recline and they put a switch on a bracket attached to my Head Support that I touch with my cheek to control my recline back function. That way I can do it whenever I need to during the day because when I recline back it repositions my body for me and that is how they have me doing it. So I have to kind of remind myself to do it but you get used to it and you do it by habit because you need to. And they gave me a different cushion they called the Toilet Seat Cushion and it is solid around the edges and has a big covered hole in the middle so my Butt is kind of suspended over the hole with no pressure points. I guess it is for people who have serious pressure issues and before this they tried a couple of ROHO Cushions but they did not work for me so now they have me on this one and it is working really good so far and I can recline back and take the pressure off that way now too.They kind of do all of this after you have serious pressure issues like me so it does not happen again right away.

Luckily, I have not had much of a pressure sore to deal with. Yeah, I do pressure reliefs without thinking about them now. I know what cushion you are talking about and that's good to know.
@pagzplay
@pagzplay Жыл бұрын
@@masonx54 Yeah you get into the habit of doing pressure reliefs when you need to do it all the time. So far this cushion has been really good and my Butt stayed healed and I have not gotten any new ones.My Doctor made me get a new Powerchair and I had to go to an Assessment with an Occupational Therapist and a guy from the Powerchair Company. I just sat there and they decided what I needed and they knew from my Doctor that I had some pressure issues on my Butt so they tried to give me everything they thought could help me now. But now with this Powerchair I have the switch by my head so I can recline back when I need to and reposition my Butt that way. As long as you keep doing that Mason and you have a good cushion like this one you should be good but it is something that can happen to anyone at anytime so you need to try to prevent it from happening if you can.

I agree! All I have to do is search the internet for images of pressure sores for me to want to do pressure reliefs.
@pagzplay

@@masonx54 Yeah pressure sores can get pretty Bad and the toughest part is getting them healed.I had to lay and stay off my Butt because if you put too much pressure on them before you heal they will open up again. So you are way better off doing pressure reliefs during the day before it happens and that is why I have all this on my Powerchair now to help me do pressure reliefs.

hey Mason, what do you think about adding some bars/handles to the frame of the chair to help push yourself back up from the pressure relief you show that 6:40? I just received a manual wheelchair and find it difficult to push myself back up sometimes after leaning forward all the way to relieve pressure
@masonx54
@masonx54 7 жыл бұрын
+Austin That sounds like it would work. I'm assuming you'd place the handles on the frame facing forward, the same direction as your toes are pointing?
@18nole
@18nole 7 жыл бұрын
Yes exactly. To provide places to push off of to help sit back upright.
@masonx54
@masonx54 7 жыл бұрын
+Austin Do they make anything like that? Can you not use the bars already there? I have a tip: breathe in deep as you're pushing up.

3/16/2024 I'm paralized on the right side so only the left could function as shown. I have a manual chair. Couldn't I just stand up for relief? That would be more feasible for me.
