Training every behavior is about breaking ti into tiny steps that you dog can succeed, but also setting up/choosing the environment or space so they he can succeed. Try blocking an area with a chair etc until he has mastered a controlled pull, for example. Then move thae chair a little.

I am always on a look out for new training techniques. I especially liked your use of a swivel chair for teaching wheel chair positions. Thanks for all the tips.

As I trainer I always look for new skill to teach and pass along. This video was exceptional. You used very simple objects to teach major heeling skills. Thank you for sharing. This will help many.

Thanks for this video. My dad is in a wheelchair, so my dog is desensitized to the wheelchair, but teaching him some of these things of where and how to move around it would be great!

I have a 10th grade reading level, but your first sentence wasn't left up long enough to read it all the way through. Since we're trying to see what's going on plus reading, you might want to lengthen those parts too. I wanted to learn how it's done (not so much that now I think I know how to do it lol), so thanks for the training video.

I’m having trouble getting my pup to walk a safe distance beside my power chair because a mild clipping could result in a broken foot. He loose leash walks beside me (mostly) but I can’t get him to walk parallel but far enough from the wheel. Tips? Help! Thank you so much!

What if you're starting with a puppy and you're in a wheelchair day one?
@supernaturalbc20086 жыл бұрын
You will need to have a training helper as part of your support system for your service puppy candidate. Also, you will need to be creative in thinking up extenders to deliver treats, use remote training devices etc. Again, something your helper can rig up depending on your level of ability and dexterity.

I'm looking to start training while I'm in my wheelchair.Now the demonstration you showed was that with a young dog/bitch and at what age and previous to starting this training what had the dog done to get to this level of beginning to train. Apart from puppy training and basic obedience. Would a German Shepard be compatible or a border collie for Assistance Dog training. Thank you

The dog needs to be able to walk on a loose leash as well as be focused on you in public during training sessions. Since there is no physical stress put on the dog for these behaviors and tasks, they can be started when the dog is ready. I think Jessie was about 20 mos when this video was made. Whether a dog is suitable as an SD depends on health and temperament. Start with a dog that enjoys training. Either would be great. We start our dogs at 12-18 months on tasks. Obedience from the day you get them.
