We (Craig and Claire) return home and attempt to go back to normal life 6 months after a cycling accident that left Craig paralysed from the chest down and reliant on a wheelchair. Join us as we learn what it's like to live with a spinal cord injury, discover the challenges wheelchair users have to face and overcome and search for wheelchair accessible hotspots. We want to show you how much paraplegics can still do and that there is life after paralysis!

I so glad i found your videos my wife had a stroke 5 weeks ago and is due home from Hospital soon. She is paralysed down right arm leg and I was not sure about anything in relation to moving her and her future movement etc. Although we will try eveything possible to get her some movement back. Cant thank you enough for posting these videos. Outstanding and I wish you the very best. And you look like you are keeping really fit 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Great video! It definitely helps to have all these positions as options! I never sleep on my back since I sit a lot, but occasionally I will rest on my back.

Do you alternate between sides each night? I prefer to sleep on my side but I start to get pressure on my hip and it typically takes 2 days to clear so I have to sleep on my back every 3rd day to make sure I don't get a pressure sore on my hip. Btw loved the how people think I sleep video you did on Instagram a while back!

my first question....advantages and disadvantages of being taller with transfers craig
@PARALIFE
@PARALIFE 5 жыл бұрын
I don't find being taller helps alot with transfers but I've never been a short person! I find the thing that makes a difference is how long your arms are relative to your body. I have long arms but also have a taller wheelchair and a long body so it can be difficult to lift myself effectively.

Do they teach you these kind of things in hospital after your accident? My disability is different so I've had to teach myself everything, as I didn't have any traditional rehab and NHS and council are pretty useless. Thank God for online info that's for sure. lol
@PARALIFE
@PARALIFE 5 жыл бұрын
Kind of - they teach you the basic wheelchair to another surface transfer but the technique I use to get my legs up is something I figured out for myself. In terms of sleeping positions they were very overboard in hospital - they suggested turning every 2-4 hours and using a special mattress, neither of which were practical in the real world! On the positive side at least you didn't need to waste your time learning all the NHS health and safety approved methods that are much less efficient than some of the things you can learn online that people actually use in practice. Even though I spent 6 months in hospital and rehab I've probably learnt just as much if not more from other wheelchair users!

Thank you bro for this video...but i don't have dat much of will power...Bro i don't want to live....i want to die..am a paraplegic from last 2 years..😥😥😥
@PARALIFE
@PARALIFE 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that. I struggle with not having will power sometimes too but in those times when I have no motivation I try to remember what I still have and what I can still do rather than what I have lost since my injury. I also found that meeting other paraplegics or quadriplegics and playing sports helped me a lot with coming to terms with being paraplegic - it helped me to realise I could still have fun just in a different way than I was used to. Have you watched any videos from 'roll with Cole and Charisma' or 'Wheels 2 Walking'? Both of them have talked about feeling very low at points after they were paralysed and not wanting to live but they have since managed to change their outlook - it might be useful for you to talk to one of them to see what helped them?

what‘’s your sensation level ?Can you move your legs even a liitle?It seems that your legs' muscle keep so strong. I mean, stronger than most paraplegic people who I have seen.
@PARALIFE
@PARALIFE 5 жыл бұрын
I am a T4 complete paraplegic and have no movement or sensation below my chest level, so I can't move my legs at all. I don't do anything special with my legs but I do get a large amount of spasms which would help maintain some muscle tone. It is also still not that long since my injury (14 months) and I used to have big legs from cycling regularly. I guess some of that muscle may still be there!
@morgancalvi6675
@morgancalvi6675 4 жыл бұрын
@@PARALIFEthat having big muscles from cycling just may be contributing to your spasms....I know you are not at that house often, but I can say if you have scoliosis, the back of that wheelchair is very bad for you. You need something way more supportive and curved. I am not a PT or OT, but that's kind of obvious.

@@morgancalvi6675 yeah it's pretty bad, hopefully my new wheelchair with a curved back should be here fairly soon which should be way better

i know this is a few years old but only just came across it through a google search i was doing and felt like i wanted to add something to it. No doubt at some point there will be an able person or two who has no experience of disability seeing this and assuming this is how all us wheelchair users get in bed (if they dont just assume we sleep sat up in our chairs, ive actually seen someone ask that) but thats not necessarily true, , I was born with a disability, spina bifida and although i cant walk at all i can put some pressure on my right leg, so i actually find it a little easier than seen in this video, i just use my arms to lift (it helps that im small lol) and push a bit with my good leg, never needed a board to help me transfer. I just wanted to point out that everyones different, we adapt in our own ways to our situation and our abilities.

You look really fit🤩, how do you keep from gaining weight?
@PARALIFE
@PARALIFE 5 жыл бұрын
Haha, thanks! It is something that you have to think about and doesn't come naturally. Just from diet and exercise and remembering that I don't burn as many calories as I used to when you sit in a chair all day. I'm careful about the type of foods I eat and avoid large portion sizes. We enjoy lots of different sports and try to do something at least 3 times a week.
