@betacam2354 жыл бұрын
It's not accurate to say that the stretch bolts that hold the engine together can only be used once. The Rover engineers who built and developed it used them up to 18 times. You need to check the length is as original before re-using them, if they are overlength they have been stretched out of tolerance and can't be used. I've re-used them on a high compression 220bhp 1.8 litre K series race engine with zero problems.

@ianturner60624 жыл бұрын
What makes Ed think he can set up a Lotus *better* than either Roger of Matt Becker (father and son) , the two men who were responsible for far the handling of this magnificent car? That's like me deciding I am better managing a football club than..... whomever! So good was Matt that, after his father retired Matt was poached by Astons for a sizeable sum and he's now the head of Engineering! Many would happily say that those two are/were the best chassis set-up men in the country, if not, the world! Sorry Ed, you're a nice guy but..... I think I'll leave my Elise as Matt and Roger left it..... they knew more than you do, Ed!
@VeliRajasaar2 жыл бұрын
He didn't think he's setting it up better... He used fresh Lotus suspension and did corner weighting which is a basic part of suspension setup also done in the factory. I think you have misunderstood the point of modifications, though - we don't modify our cars because we think we're better than the ones who designed it. A street car is a collection of compromises - you identify what compromises stand in the way of your build and address them.
@proituk2 жыл бұрын
@@VeliRajasaar Veli..... You undercut your own point at the end. Clearly, your comment about 'upgrade' DOES imply he is making it better than the Beckers managed..... and that is laughable! Damn it, those of us who know, damned nigh WORSHIP the Beckers!!!
@VeliRajasaar2 жыл бұрын
@@proituk The second half of my comment was general, not addressed to what was done in the video :) The chassis and suspension of the Elise are an engineer's dream, but you can always suit it for your direction better, evident also from the different suspension packages the factory offered. Also, companies like Öhlins and Nitron can make better shocks than the units offered by the Lotus factory, both for track and comfort. Saying otherwise is blinding yourself, time has moved on a lot. So again, the car is not perfect for everything from the factory, every aspect of a production vehicle is a compromise of budget, safety and regulations.
@proituk2 жыл бұрын
@@VeliRajasaar Again, you miss the point. Yes, the Beckers set the cars up to fit a budget. Yes there ARE better shockers available....... BUT....... the car has been optimised around in the original spec shocks and springs. Roger amd Matt would not have JUST bought a more expensive set of shockers and just stuck them on. They would have tested them, refined the adjustable settings after repeated be substantial checks and have recalibrated the REST of the handling package. Do you suggest that Ed tested the initial settings of the shocks, drove 50 miles, changed the 'rates', tested for ANOTHER 50 miles, changed the rates.... retesed, changed the camber, retested, changed the tyre pressures, retested......... and so on? No, like everyone else who thinks they know better than the Beckers, the bought them, guessed the rates and settings and merely hoped they are better! Put brutalky, only IDIOTS would change the shocks/springs on race car and expect it to lap quicker WITHOUT structured program of tests! That's exactly what Ed did NOT do. And that is rxactly what the rest of the 'i know better than the Beckers' brigade do. They buy raised springrates, never check the bound/rebound rates suit this chassis...., stick them on, and POSE to be their friends that 'I fitted seperate reservoir Ohlins for a VAST price...... and it goes MUCH better'. Without a structured series of tests, my experience is that, purely through the laws of entropy, you new shock/spring set up will be WORSE!
@VeliRajasaar2 жыл бұрын
@@proituk... Ed literally installed a factory set of shocks. Did you watch the video? The higher end shock absorber producers like Öhlins valve their shocks based on the actual car. They simulate, run shock dynos, test on track, adjust and then produce a product tailored specifically for your use. Additionally, alignment and tire pressures have nothing to do with shock valving design. You adjust the alignment and pressures based on the tire you pick, based on pyrometer measurement to confirm the compound heats up equally on all three tire zones. But none of the above is relevant for our discussion because you missed a crucial point in the video, which caused your rant. No need, these were Lotus original shocks from a test car with suitable valving and spring rates.
