AMD have messed up. I certainly wouldn’t mind swapping full fat cores for efficiency cores. Though should compensate with more efficiency cores. So maybe 6 cores to 4 cores plus 4 efficiency cores would be better option.
@rattlehead999 Жыл бұрын
AMD's C-cores are full fledged cores, with all the instructions and Hyper-Threading, intel's E-Cores have fewer instructions and many programs can't utilize them. AMD's approach is overall better. 4P + 4C or even 4P + 8C cores will be great. 4P + 8C cores should consume as much as 8P cores. Intel needs 2.4E cores to equal equal 1P core without hyper-threading and again they don't have all the instructions. Intel's solution is better for laptops and casual users for sure.
@rotmistrzjanm8776 Жыл бұрын
@@rattlehead999 Sure but you miss the point - intel's E-cores are free extras meanwhile AMD is taking full fledged normal cores and replaces them with worse C-cores while pretending they are the same.

@@rotmistrzjanm8776Intel's E cores are not free extras. 3.7x e-cores = 1 big core in terms of die size(cost and price) and 2.5x E-cores consume as much as 1x P-core. Those aren't free extras. You pay for die size after all.

I like the technology of having small cores and think it's a good option if you want longer battery. I don't like that some have all large cores that share the same sku as one that includes small cores. the skus should be different and disclosed. Nobody should be tricked into getting something they didn't intend to get.

it was so much easier in the old days where they didn't make a new SKU every 100 MHz from 2GHz to 6GHz... we had what 6-10 different desktop chips or so? and don't dis the 13100.... I have a 12100 and I am VERY HAPPY with it, it sips power, it games well enough for my needs and it was "fairly" cheap even though this is Europe... I have had a 5800X and a 3070 TI... but "downgraded" long ago to a 12100 and 3060 TI and are quite happy with it and it's power usage.

So yes, in mobile Zen4c is a great idea (in fact get rid of the full cores altogether). Double the GPU cores. High end 24, low end 8 minimum, maybe 4-6 on an 'Athlon'

It's not just AMD and Intel (although Intel are the worst). Look at motherboard manufacturers, creating so many SKUs. Or Nvidia releasing so many high-end products from the same silicon (which graphics card manufacturers then also proliferate). Each of these require release testing and customer support, hence rising costs for the consumer

I have no problem treating Zen4c as the same. If their construction is the same it makes total sense. Logically the turbo boost speed on all core goes down. So if you can free die area using space optimized cores that would only ever see those reduced clock speeds anyway, I'm not sure what we are losing. Something we never really had?

I was also considering a PCIe NVMe expansion. Something is telling me that 28 PCIe Lanes is not going to be enough and I should fork up the money for HEDT again.
@TechDeals Жыл бұрын
Boards with 6 M.2 slots exist now... I have one at the office with 5 M.2 slots, no riser cards required. There is no HEDT for normal people, it's been dead for a few years now. The PCIe lanes have improved on consumer platforms.

@@TechDeals Yes I was thinking the same. I just wasn't sure how many I could use if I only had 16 PCIe Lanes left over after GPU. Older Macs are repairable, serviceable, and once upgraded, quite performant. Apple ARM platforms are ultra locked. You cannot replace any of the memory, processor, graphics, or boot storage on a Macintosh Apple wants to sell you now. For a notebook, you also cant replace the screen, battery or keyboard and trackpad either. And anyone with more than a single digit IQ, wont willingly buy into such an instant e-waste. So rather than make a better product that is repairable and usable, Apple wants to wall off the environment with mandatory software updates.

I miss the beige PowerMacs... I did quite a business with those in the 90s, you could take a dozen broken machines and get half a dozen working ones by swapping it all around. Then again, Apple didn't make as much money back then.

@@TechDeals Never mind that... Seriously, ARM cpus? Hybrid cores? Yeah, I had enough of that the last couple decades on phones. Arm is not performant. Arm cannot multitask to save a literal life. Why would I want that future for a gaming pc, ever?

Compare it to Intel/AMD APU, not Nvidia (Source: on low end Nvidia equipped laptops I usually get within 20% of the speed with the iGPU and some tuning. Like low latency overclocked dual rank RAM and a CPU undervolt. And yes the power consumption goes way way down). The 15th gen Intel stuff is supposed to be raising the bar.

The laptop manufacturer ultimately sets the price is an interesting point. That is why the i5 can outperform an i9. The manufacturer is spending so much on the Intel chip and not keeping the thermal solutions beefed up to the point where it can keep up with the heat the chip produces. Of course they are taking the data that a lot of people are doing bursty workloads and not using the chip. But historically the i9 (or quad i7 for first 3 generations) was a terrible value. We can see the same thing on the Apple side where that ultrasonic high pressure cooling system made a MacBook Air as fast as a MacBook Pro. Its just silly.

Respectfully, I believe your views on heterogenous architectures are skewed by what Intel and Apple have been offering in the space so far. You haven’t tested Zen 4c yet. You appear to be discounting the possibility that, when combined with at least one Zen 4 core, a chip containing C cores performs roughly the same as it would if all Zen 4 cores. Perhaps AMD is obscuring which cores are which because, unlike E-cores, it does not matter.Furthermore, if it enables AMD to either bring these chips to lower pricepoints or to further fund the R&D division that has brought us respectable uplifts with Zen every couple of years, maybe it’s a worthy trade-off. Maybe it’s better for most consumers not to know the difference.

The Zen4c cores run at a lower clock speed than the Zen4 cores. That alone is part of the problem.
