This might sound sad or ridiculous, but the fact is that, as someone who audited Charity before, what Rowan said was actually correct... A little context, I'm not from the US/UK, but over here in my country: Some charities tend to be set-up without a proper plan. They often find some rich sponsor or board member, set up their charity and basically spend their money without a single bit of consideration of how they might get more money or make it sustainable. While that sounds like they are doing good, most of the money spent were actually spent on the rent, and human resources, and only a small portion actually helped out the needy when the charity isn't sustainable. Most charities are also often mis-managed and completely relies on government handouts and/or donations to survive. If you looked at the annual budget for most charities, they are often running in the reds, spending much more than the amount that they are guaranteed to receive/earn, and rely on donations to cover the amount they lack. Staff and management often waste money by claiming that they are "doing good" and that "doing good" is more important than saving money. Then when they receive less handouts or donations than they "planned" (which is ridiculous to assume that you will receive more donations each year than the previous), this situation in the video do sometimes occur. Worst is, rarely they get so desperate for funding that they just accept donations from anyone and end up as a front for money laundering. It has gotten so bad to the point that the Commissioner of Charities here has to actually tell charities that they are still a business and they should be aiming to be self-sustainable rather than be planning how to spend more than what they earn. Another fun fact: The charities that overspends or are often mis-managed, tends to be related to a certain religion that shall remain unnamed. During audits, when asked why do they need a $3,000 dollar laptop and $180 gaming mouse, they told us it is for video editing and streaming some of their activities and that we shouldn't be questioning them as they answer to god, and they will not mis-handle money cause their god sees all.

Thats similar to how most charities are in America. And a lot of them you can see their financial records and you will see most of the money goes to upkeep etc instead of those actually in need.

@@williamthatsmyname Sounds like a certain gamer inclusivity charity which "sets-up" empty spaces in conventions when most conventions already have something of that sort even without them. Every single time a nation attempted to "redistribute the wealth from the 1%" tens of millions died. Its not something I want to ever happen again. Something I learned when I was in the military, a major differentiator between successful nations and unsuccessful ones is strict property law. Laws that protect individual ownership encourage innovation and investment in social projects. If you disincentivise innovative and creative work, then people will just do the bare minimum, and spend their free time coming up with creative ways to do even less.

I think the moral of the story is that landlords should not exist as helping people who routinely face structural violence (such as starvation and being unhoused) is far more important than profits, yet our laws make it okay for people who don't even work for a living (they just use their wealth to extract wealth from others in exploitative deals) to essentially shut down charities because we value profits and property of human life and dignity.

I would either sell it (either outright or in a series of payments if they could not afford it in one sum and have them gain ownership over time) or I would give it away as a charity donation. Lol I worked at this startup that moved to this area in a major city that was once elite but when the pandemic came, it was vacated and became a ghost town. Old building, everything very crowded and poorly maintained feeling. Ceiling might fall on you while working. They were so proud that they "made it" and got that office. Like we're finally a real company guys. Then they forced everyone to commute in which was like 2 hours for most people. Now that we have an office, we have to use it. 3 days minimum. And then they were just like poorly managed, nobody knows what they were doing. They bought some company at some point and the only random employee who didn't quit at that company got automatically promoted to VP. He was like a junior level engineer. Toxic POS who would just talk over everyone and then mansplain it and then start squealing and find people to blame at the first sign of any trouble instead of actually just fixing the problem. BTW "Charities" aren't good. They're mostly money laundering fronts to avoid paying taxes. They also use a lot of volunteers, despite the executives on payroll making millions of dollars a year. Volunteer work is low skilled work that otherwise would have been a job that's paid minimum wage by some of the most at risk people on the planet. You're just showing up to do their job for free, which is a double whammy. Same for non-profits, which are actually for-profits. You might've also heard for-profit before, and this is actually what should be called "legally-required-to-earn-maximum-profits-under-any-circumstance". Nonprofits are the same as that, except they're not legally required to do that. But they still try to. These aren't like people waking up and buying their own one way ticket on a public jet to use their own hands to dig trenches. It's all for greedy money laundering. It's just that starving minorities are the product here instead of iphones.

Well the business guys are portrayed as jerks. The reality is they have a right to get paid for their space in their building. Anyone who thinks they should give space to the charity for free. I invite to open up their place of business or their house for people to be there free. Maybe the Viva La dirt League studios that I help pay for with the kickstarter could instead be used to house homeless people. I fully agree that the lack of sensitivity is bad in these characters and funny. I've run A non-profit and I promise you we paid rent.

Too accurate. Once the funding dries up, the charity folds, leaving a lot of people without hope or recourse, it doesn't matter how well managed it may have been. But hey nobody cares about the little people, it’s just business, right.
@bufordhighwater9872Ай бұрын
Charities that actually help people rarely fold, because they actually manage their finances, make plans, and have complete transparency and/or oversight. Oh, and because people see the charity helping and how it spends their money, they're more willing to continue donating.
@matthewtalbot-paine7977Ай бұрын
It is literally the case that not enough people cared about any charity that went under either that or it was criminally mismanaged because in order for a charity to go under it needs to not have enough donations from the public.
@Unknown_GeniusАй бұрын
@@bufordhighwater9872 This pretty much. And they're also absolutely transparent about if things don't work out potentially leading to people lending an extra dime so it doesn't go under instantly. I met a propety manager like this. He started by telling me that I needed to confirm a meeting time with with him the day before or he wouldn't be showing up. Understable but it came across as offputting. He then showed me the unit with a number of damages that he said "Would be fixed by move in day". I later went through multiple google reviews that mentioned him by name along with "Your deposit is a donation. It doesn't matter how well you take care of the place." I didn't take it. 🙄

@@matthewtalbot-paine7977 It was HIS GOVERMENT the one to making him unable to afford rent, not him. If the authorities explicitly ban me from working (any work), it`s not my fault if can`t earn money. In my country, the goverment imposed a lockdown, but funded part of the salaries of the people they forced to stay at home (my job was deemed esential, and all my neighbours were envious of me, they even asked me to walk my dogs, so they could take a 15 or 20 minute walks outside). Everybody contribuited (the workers with reduced salaries, the firms with reduced profits, and the goveremt re-directing funds to people and firms in need). Just making people homless because of circumstances out of their control is a good way to make your people give a sh*t about your country....
@SunwardRanger83Ай бұрын
@@matthewtalbot-paine7977 To be fair, if this person wasn't allowed to work due to government lockdowns, it wasn't really their fault either. I don't blame the landlord since they have bills they have to pay to stay out of foreclosure, but there were a lot of people that got screwed due to government interference. Of course, in my area there were lots of places hiring and plenty of people who just didn't want to work during the whole scare, so if anyone lost their place because of that, that's solely on them for making that decision.
