The thing that intimidates me about guys going out of their way for me is that I feel like I could never pay them back.

FaithHopeLove 9 why would you need to pay them back? Just, if you like him, show gratitude

Yeah. Because there are some men who would go all out for you and when you somehow reject them (even with a good reason) they would be angry at you and demand to repay them of all that they have done for you.

I see what you are saying! However, it's not about "paying anyone back." As you may know, my husband moved across the WORLD for me - left his entire life to move to my country and marry me! If I lived with such a burden that I had to "pay him back" for his sacrifice, what a burden that would be! Instead, I focus on loving him in the best way that I can, being the best wife I can, and showing gratitude for the HUGE and little ways he has shown me love over the years and to this day.

I think this is common with both genders... I can't tell you how many times I've just smiled or showed a little interest in a guy and they literally run in the other direction. No matter how much I dial down the enthusiasm, even the tiniest bit scares the bejeezes out of them. It just comes down to: People who are insecure are afraid of a good thing.

I really struggle with this because i did at one point have a guy pursue me properly but for some reason this made him unattractive to me. It's sad that my brain is wired to be attracted to a risk. But I definitely learned my lesson with my last relationship that was just a hot mess, and I'm slowly learning to not desire what's going to hurt me but what will fulfill me

I needed to hear this, Emily. In the past, I would get so frustrated that guys would ask me out in a note or via text. I wanted a guy to ask me out IN PERSON, because I knew a only courageous man could do that. I recently had a man ask me on a date face-to-face, and my brain freaked out! I was so used to guys not pursuing me correctly, that I didn't know how to handle it. It's kinda sad if you think about it. We shouldn't feel like we don't deserve to be treated well. But it's nice to finally see someone who's willing do it the right way. Thank you for your words of encouragement.

May I please say that this was RIGHT on time for me!!! I'll be 27 next month and I'm planning on going on my VERY FIRST date ever with a great guy next month!! Early on I realized that he had several of the qualities that I prayed for!!! It scared me and I was like "he's too good for me!" When he showed me how respectful he was, I told him that was new for me. The majority of the guys that I was getting to know in the past were no match for this guy! I was wrecking my brain trying to figure out what to do because he is such a good guy!!!! I had to come to the realization that I prayed for this and that I should embrace it. It was hard for me, but I am learning go accept it! He is willing to drive 45 mins to pick me up although I offered to meet him half way!!! I had to think to myself "he's a good guy! Give him a chance." Yes, I'm so used to being flirted with by men who aren't what I desire so, when he came I was like "waaaiiiit!" I'm going to stop running. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!!!! God knew that I needed this reassurance!

when I was dating I remember a good friend gave me great advice. Listen to them. they will tell you things that you need to notice and if they say "You are too good for me" or "I'm a bad boy" or I'm not a good guy" they might be telling you a warning BUT that goes for US too!!! when my wonderful husband was courting me I had this need to tell him I was not good enough and HE could do better . . . which was his choice to make and I didn't need to be pushing him away. I caught myself do this a little and I knew it was just old wounds and worked at stopping this and RECEIVING this new man's love in a vacuum as if I had never been hurt. I was mildly aware of red flags but not overly and I was trying to get to know him and letting him get to know me. basically to RELAX! the dating was the easiest part of our relationship and treasured memories!

So true. I feel like I struggle with receiving love from my boyfriend or attention because I'm not used to it at home. So when I receive all this love it makes me uncomfortable and sometimes I question my feelings. However, I'm learning that I have things to work through and shouldn't be shutting him down but rather work through this awkward process of healing together and rely on God to give me understanding when it comes to getting to know each other.

I have never have a date or a boyfriend. I don't get stressed with it because I know if marriage is my vocation God will make it happend (of course I cooperate, I don't spent my days hiding from men). But I got sad for my friends because they don't go on planned dates, they just hang out at best. I hope they start being more mindfull about their relationships. The two sides have to cooperate! Two points I want to bring up. In the beginning of a relationship, if you don’t know a man who’s asking you out from Adam, I think it’s wise to set boundaries for your own safety, such as meet up in a public place rather than let him pick you up. Or not sharing too many personal things too soon. Secondly, sometimes it’s hard to accept or understand when someone goes out of their way for you, if in your past these sorts of behaviors have been tied to unspoken conditions or expectations. That’s why I think it’s so important to talk about that stuff and make expectations clear, find out his intentions behind an action. (and hope he isn’t lying to you)

This is so me 🙈 On the other hand, in this situation I think maybe I'm right to be a little weirded out: so I'm currently living in France, maybe it's the culture, idk...anyway I met the friend of a friend about 2 weeks ago and he asked me for my number after we chatted for a few minutes. I was like, "hmm...ok! Let's be friends!" Mind you, I did say to to him, "sure, why not, to make friends!" (I'm new here). Anyway, homeboy has been messaging me everyday (sometimes I got annoyed cuz like, I have things to do man). Anyways, he asked me last weekend to be his girlfriend. I responded as politely as I could that I didn't want to be his girlfriend, just friends (cuz I mean, after all, I'm new here. I would like to make a few friends while I'm here). Homeboy hasn't messaged me since. Now I'm a little like, awww maaann, I lost a friend. I mean though, I wasn't particularly interested in him for his looks (I know, I know, shallow) but at the same time I feel like after 2 weeks man? I really don't know you....in my mind, you don't date someone who you've known for 2 weeks....idk...maybe I'm an old fashioned granny lol....I feel like we should know each other as friends before we decide on a bf/gf situation. Anyways, I do tend to push people away and not give them the benefit of the doubt so yeah....it was a bit too sudden for me hence the errmaagaasshh!!!!!!! Ruuunnn!!!!!!!!! response 🤷‍♀️ Sighs....and I'm always asking God to lead me to the right person.... I feel like the whole dating thing goes over my head everyyyy time. I've joked in prayer that He has to hit me over the head to let me know hey, this is a good guy for you 🤦‍♀️

Emily, could you do a video about importance of attraction in relationships? Because sometimes I am pursued by guys who are nice, some of them are even good Christians, but if i feel zero attraction towards them I feel strong reluctance to take this relation on another level. Sometimes i think It's just my bad atitiude and it makes me feel guilty and superficial, so I'm asking God a lot to change my mind and make me notice internal beauty above all, but I still have problem with it. I guess you didn't have this problem with Daniel, because he has the 'full package', but did you have had similar problems before you met him? I would love to hear your opinion on it :)

What if you’re not really into that guy? What if he’s a man of God, doing things the right way, being intentional and all that but you’re not really fond of the guy? Is it good to just say no from the beginning or start dating and see what happens?
@biancathio
@biancathio 5 жыл бұрын
Abducens Just adding my two cents, it is entirely your choice! If you’re not too keen on the guy but want to see how it goes maybe after one date, then go for it. If you know within yourself it’s not going to work then of course you are within your rights to say no :) the choice is yours, just make sure you bring God to your decison-making because He knows what decision you need to make :)

It’s such a shame that so many of us women have to be so cautious around men who are trying to do the right thing. I know if I was approached by someone who was that forward and intentional I’d be freaked out too. I’d assume he just wanted sex or a casual relationship which isn’t what I want. I want a life partner who loves me and loves God. But when all your experiences (like mine) are with guys that are less than ideal, it’s so so so hard to trust or believe a nice man when he comes along. It’s like there’s no way, this has to be too good to be true.

This video came just in time. A really nice guy hit me up recently and he was clearly showing interest in me... but as usual, I freaked out and I think he noticed that I did. Later, I thought more about it (and I stalked him a bit on social media) and I realized that I'd honestly be interested in getting to know him better. However, at this point, it seems like I may have scared him off. It's a bit frustrating but I'm willing to wait it out and see how things go in the future. And I guess that's why this video was so timely. Maybe I should just go with the flow, no matter how unnatural it may be for me. Thanks for this Emily!!❤❤

Emily's marriage really is a testament to the amazing, unstoppable will of God. I think like with so many things it's about being observant, and taking cues from the Holy Spirit. Wonderful men do the things she stated, but so do controlling men. Eventually the controlling man will start to subtly throw in that if you like him you won't wear such and such, or talk to so and so. Unless you have an issue with inappropriate modes of dress or that person is unhealthy to converse with, then it would be best to back off from that relationship. If a guy is interested in pursuing you for you, and seems to like you for exactly who you are, let 'em drive fifteen miles out of their way and see where things go. There are some people who are not mature enough to handle a genuine, Godly relationship now, but might be later on. Let God do amazing things with your life, then if the guy wants to be a part of it when he is ready, if it is His will, let him go for it.

I guess 'pursues properly' is the key lol. What does that mean? If a guy came up to me out of no where or I didn't know him well, and he did all these amazing things for me, then I would be very suspicious. It'a nice to appreciate good guys when they actually come along, but there are a lot of not good guys (and people in general, honestly) who would do the same thing with ENTIRELY different intentions and expectations. So to me until I know them and their intentions, i'm going to back off. In my experience, generally speaking, you're more likely to come accross someone who does super nice things with strings attached than you are to come accross someone who is just genuinely kind and intentional, especially if they move quickly or they don't know you very well.

They realise there's a vacancy in their life and they intend to fill it... so they follow all the right steps and do all the right things and try to lure you in before you realise... And I've learned to trust my gut feeling. Those dates (which on the surface are really great and all) kind of feel more like a job interview... where I get hints and questions about whats important to him in life and hopefully give the right response... and those kinds of guys are so confident and intentional and everything so I'm even more cautious around those by now... any tips how to proceed from that?

I was kind of a laughing watching this because it completely describes me.... I get so freaked out when guys do exactly what I want, but I need to chill out and be like self, this is what I have prayed for.

That’s why it’s be careful what you ask for . Because when we want it and can’t have it we fantasize and when we are ready for it and can have it it makes everything better

Hahaha oh man, the “hypothetical woman” she was describing in the beginning is soo me 😂 For me I think it’s a matter of insecurity. When a man is forward I think “there’s no way he really likes me.” “You’re not good enough for him, this must be a joke.” So I run away!

I love this! I will say, though, for me, any time I’ve tried to date it ends up that the person is obsessed/in love after 3 days of talking. That sounds really arrogant and I hope it doesn’t come off that way, I just seem to attract guys that can be a bit possessive/obsessive. I want to be a wife and a mama more than anything, and while I appreciate intentions and initiative, it gets frustrating trying to date because of this reason.

I don't think Emily cares, she is such a well spoken grown woman plus her content is so mature that I don't think is "make fun of" material contrary to Girl Defined.

It's possible, certainly. But here's what I think about the haters (whoever they may be now or later on): They can waste all the time they want talking about me/what I preach and believe - I'll continue to be busy tending to the mission God gave me of raising up empowered women and trying to change the world in my small little way :)
