We take a soldering iron and etch the number in the tag then trace over with the marker so if it fades you can still tell her number

when i milked my swiss i had my feed guy a few of them and my dairy supply guy tell me all the time feed milk replacer? when i quit i was getting $17.84 per hundred pounds and milk replacer at that time was $68.00 a bag. i told all of them that makes NO sense? 68.00 for 50 pounds OR $17.84 for 100 pounds? they wouldnt talk to me no more ha ha. BUT they would always say put the milk in the tank for the money THEN turn around and waste the money on high priced milk replacer. mine stayed on whole milk for at least 2 months.

Makes sense to me David that it makes no sense to use feed milk replacer.

Our Jerseys are the same way. The ones who follow you around and let you make all over um seem to be the ones that wanna PLAY HOOF IN YOUR MOUTH DISEASE!!! lol. Have found over the years, put the two year old springers in with the cows about two weeks before they calve, Let them come through the parlor, give them some parlor feed while they are in there and touch them and work their udder. Of corse not to much, just kinda maybe rub the fingers a little over it. Then when they come in, its not so much a shell shock to them, Kevin from Ohio. Great Video as ALWAYS!!!

when I was a kid I found a old neck tag it was plastic was gold flake with black numbers and a clear epoxy over the entire tag haven't seen it since we moved in 07 even back then I was like this tag was $$ and was built to last. I now have dairy goats and wish I had 20 just like it.

Love the buckets. Those are the kind we still use to milk our 50 cows. My Dad was offered quite a bit of money for them but not enough to pay to put in pipeline. So nice when the heifers take to the milkers without much fuss. Fancy calf I think I saw a little roan on her neck.

You treat your animals so well and are so in touch with their needs. Such a pretty calf. I miss them. I love how mom is watching and checking on everything you're doing. Thank you for sharing the video. Stay safe, and God bless.

We buy our orange ear tags from Genex by the 100 because we milk 450. We tag our heifers in both ears and our beef in one ear. So we hardly ever have a cow lose both tags

I remember the tin tags. My grandpa had a bunch of those on his cows. I don't know what is best it seems like they all come out or fade. I've sharpied a bunch of them like George was saying.

Really liked this video. It felt very relaxed and I loved the beautiful cow and her calf. Hope the weather gets better soon. We (Mid-Michigan) are expecting a high of about 74 today (Wednesday) and then storms and highs in the 50's for the rest of the week. Hope your weather moderates some soon and the snow actually melts away. Take Care.

I remember a few of the old metal tags. I thought ours were some sort of brass or bronze material. I think some of the original cows my dad bought in the early '60s to start his herd had those metal tags.

I’ve had good luck with Allflex tags holding up for the life of the cow. The odd one can fall out but I’ve seen them rip an ear before the tag fails if it gets stuck on something

The best way I found to keep track of cattle is the old fashioned way by writing it down in a cattlemans book. Because tags don't last long

With her size, I'd have said at least 2nd calf. I remember well, being a kid in the 90's, rolling the dice on if this cow is going to try to pin me, or kick. You get to know when they crane their neck and give you that look!

Does the rooster own that barn? He seems to be in it alot. Do you have a seperate chicken coop? Interesting video - beautiful calf - too bad most of them end up hamburger or steak.

With us in France, the labels or buckles are provided by the Ministry of Agriculture and must be placed on the calf before the age of 7 days. If an animal loses a loop, it must be replaced under penalty of sanctions, anyway the animal cannot leave the farm without being looped (one loop in each ear).
